Default My valves: egr delete and catch can from the beginning

This past winter i rebuilt my motor after extensive tracking cracked a ringland

these are my valves after 55k kms
note, the valves with any sort of gummy residue were cylinder 4 valves which had the cracked piston

Oh damn, that sucks. Oh well, I stopped reading the Speed section because according to certain people only speed owners are allowed to even look at that section.

The earlier you have an OCC, the cleaner your valves are?

Sometimes rotella sometimes penzoil platinum. Now, I run only rotella. Oil has no correlation to how clean my valves were

Just wondering since theres a thread on MSF where the guy ran rotella for 10K miles and the conclusion was that the detergents in rotella was causing more gunk in his valves...but yours looks great after that many kms put on them

    FYI

    http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=148048

Quite a few VW and Audi owners have now seen similar results. In short, don't brother with the catch cans. It's becoming more clear the carbon issue is due to EGR with overlapping cams rather than crank case ventilation.

Here's mine after 170K with no OCC, no egr, no meth, all summer miles, mostly highway.

    [IMG][/IMG]

Pic's aren't the greatest but they are coated in goop. Large growths like mushrooms on the backs of the valves growing up the stem. These pic's are after I soaked them in Seafoam. That's why they appear wet.

Short of disassembling the head, the walnut media blasting works awesome as pictured. Princess Auto sells the media guns and the walnuts. All you need is a compressor set-up.

Huh. Interesting lol. I'm pulling my motor and sending everything to get cleaned, hot tanked and built with my new internals. You should do the same @mazdaspeeding haha

Highway driving is the worst for build up on the valves

@mazdaspeeding can you post a link to the unit you're using to blast. Navigating their website is a pain in the ass

Is that because during light load cruising the egr is open and recirculating...using the inert exhaust gases to dial in the AFR and achieve some other emissions targets. That's my understanding at least.

Here's the gun. I inherited it so I don't know what it costs but I saw it at Princess Auto. Wasn't very much iirc. Works great, it has an on/off switch on the hopper which is handy so you can blow out the port with just air between walnut blasts.

Anyone passing through Kingston is welcome to some walnuts. I've got a metric **** ton leftover. PA sells a 50lb bag for $34.99. You need about 2 lbs. 50-2 = metric **** ton.

I forgot to put the black foam/sponge insert back in when I re-installed my intake mani after the cleaning.....whoops. What does that thing do? Would I be ok for one season running without it?

No my point was that those of us who didn't run EGR delete and OCC from the beginning are ****ed if that's what your single failed valve looks like

Probably helps with vibrations. Mine has been out for 3 years now

Only gen Juans have this foam piece. I think it just minimizes noise from vibration. Nothing much more than that.
