Default Speed3 Spark Plugs and Ignition Wires

Hey, for my grade 12 Auto shop class, i gotta perform a spark plug change and change my ignition wires for my CPT (basically a big year end assignment). Im currently running c-pe CAI and HKS SSQV BOV (vta). which plugs should i use? do i need to go 1 or 2 step colder? what gap should i set it? and what ignition wires should i use?

Thanks in advance for the help.

you need to find a car with a Distributor to change spark plug wires. you're looking at early 90s to find a car like that.

Spark plugs? stay stock if you can afford it.

Not necessarily, just a car that isn't coil-on-plug (for all plugs).

My old protege ('03) was 2 x COP plus 2 x plug wires, each coil fired 2 plugs.

My old Subies shared the same engine, and they were both one coil pack with 4 x plug wires (2000 model year).

Just saying by example that it doesn't necessarily need to be that old or have a distributor. I'm sure that he will know that though, and know what he will have to bring in to do the test.

We have coil packs on each plug, no plug wires.

You should just use stock plugs.

Yes I'm aware of that. Was just trying to say that the vehicle he uses for his test doesn't necessarily need to have a distributor.

I now realize that he wanted to use his car for the test, I didn't get that on the first read through. I was trying to help him open up his search for a suitable vehicle.

It is best to gap them yourself though. I have bought pre-gapped plugs that were fine and some that were WAY off. It makes a difference when it is properly gapped vs not, so why not spend the $4 and get a gap ring and check them.

The rule is you go 1 step colder for every 75-100hp gained.

Stock heat range... gap them 0.028 to 0.026...

And also using the search function might get some previous information that might help...

    That's more of a guideline.

MS3 owners that subscribed to that rule years ago have found out that, for a full bolt on stock turbo, the stock spark plugs are just fine.

Hell, I ran factory plugs putting down ~300 whp for over 50,000 kms, including numerous track days and, when they were removed at 100,000 kms, they looked like they could take another 100,000 kms.

^^^Guidelines for sure...and also depends on the way you drive.

Counter-intuitive: the harder you drive, the cleaner your plugs MAY be. Those who baby their direct-injection, turbocharged MS3 MAY have dirtier intake tracts and plugs than those of us who drive it like it's meant to be driven.

I got my NGK Iridiums 's (which are the OEM plugs, and are excellent) for 48$ shipped to my door off ebay. They are pre-gapped (correctly) but it doesn't hurt to double check.

As has already been said - dont' go with the one step colder plugs, and no wires to change.
Canada gave us rust and DRL. Thanks for nothing Canada!

@Timotee yea im pree much stock except for CAI and BOV...so im no where near 75+hp gain.

so i should gap my plugs at 0.026-0.028? and which plugs should i exactly get? and by "stock plugs" do u mean NGK iridiums?

NGK Laser Iridium are the stock plugs.

There's a reason they cost a lot. The differences are in that thread.

Per my post, they are pre-gapped correcly, and you can find them for 50 bucks on ebay. No need to pay 80+

hand tighten and a quarter turn with a wrench should do it...i think about 11ft-lbs with a torque wrench

Edit: I have personally never used a torque wrench to tighten the spark plugs. Just don't over tighten the plugs and it should be fine
