Default Pot holes and the City of Toronto

As we all know Toronto has some of the nastiest pot holes. Well here is some good news, the city of Toronto will cover you for any damage a pot hole does to your vehicle and fix said pot hole within 4 business days.

Here is what you need to do:

    1. Have a picture/video of the pot hole and your vehicle damage, where the "accident occurred".
    2. Get an estimate at a garage on how much it will cost to fix the damage and get a copy of this.
    3. Get a hold of the city and send them the photo/video evidence, as well as the copy of the estimate to repair. Location of the pot hole, obviously.
    4. You get a pot hole fixed and your car, win win.

I don't know if other city's do this but it wouldn't hurt to ask.

I can see step 3 being very difficult to accomplish.

Did you go through this process successfully?

Sounds simple. It is relatively simple. But you need to be persistent and they will run you around.

In my case because it was road work left unmarked it was a contractor who had to pay.

It took six months in total for me to get my cheque. I set up a reminded in my work outlook to call every Friday.

I had to change the time and block my number about 4 months in if I wanted someone to pick up.

I got money from the province to cover a bent rim many years ago after hitting a big hole on the 401. I tried once to get compensation from the city for damage from a pothole and got absolutely nowhere.

I know one of the stipulations for them to cover it is that they have to have been made aware of the hole first and then not have yet repaired it when the damage happened. If it hadn't been reported yet when you hit it, then it's not their liability.

Maybe that's changed in the past few years, but at the time I was dealing with it I felt like the hill was too big to climb to actually get compensation.

Actually yeah my case was helped because it HAD been reported before I got the name and number of the people who did it (it was right outside their door).

Took about 6 months for us to get anything back... blew a tire on a pothole at Cherry St just off Lakeshore. We pulled into the T&T Supermarket there to assess the damage, and within an hour there were 4 other cars beside us with flats.
