    Default Timing Chain issue

So i have an 08 3 gt with the 2.3 and im getting some ticking noise coming from the engine, When i rev it up i hear a rattle coming from that side of the engine which to me sounds like the timing chain, anyone know how much it will cost me to repair it? Thanks

    Mileage?

Normally the chains last a lot longer than the belts. But a chain will still stretch and get slop in them over time... To replace the tensioner and chain I would imagine $700 at a shop would be fair... Unless Mazda's are different but I can have the timing cover off my Dakota in an hour providing the fan clutch isn't a PITA.

    Oh wow that's early for a chain... I would expect 250,000 - 300,000 kms.

But if you're certain its from the timing cover and it increases with RPM it could very well be your chain slapping.

Another possibility is that value clearance could make sound. Did you get a pro to check it out?

Hey man , i got the same noise in my car , nothing to worry about shouldnt be your chain , The ticking sound is simply a pressure drop in the valves , in other words if you use thin oil it wont help the pressure . Try using 5w 30 . Ofcourse im not a mechanic just experienced the same issue. im at 165k on a 07 mazda 3 gs 2.3

Never ran it on low oil, always been up to date on that stuff, I've only had the car for 10000km so I'm not sure how the original owner treated it.

Odd for something with that low of mileage to fail. What was the source of the knock? Spun bearing?

Hit any big puddles recently? Ask me how I blew my Dakota's motor

your previous owner probably didn't treat the engine properly. my mechanic has a client with a 2.3L runs close to 400k, the timing chain still runs good.

just wondering, how much to replace your engine?

The rest of the car is in amazing condition and so clean but the engine is junk, and for a motor replacement it will only cost me $1000 because im going to do all the work myself. One weekend ill have her swapped out.
