    Question Rear Speakers Not Working

    Hi guys,

My girlfriend has the base-model 2006 Mazda 3 (no frills, no power doors/windows/etc.), and her rear speakers are not working.

I'm going to go ahead and assume they're actually there, as I've found no evidence that Mazda sells the car without rear speakers, though it was bought used so they may have been removed.

Any ideas on things I can check to get them working/see that they're there?

I'd rather not disassemble the door panel, but if it comes to it I'm willing to try.

I assume it's not a fuse problem, since the front speakers work fine. It's an OEM head unit.

    Thanks a lot!

Either the speakers have been removed, disconnected for some reason, the wires around the headunit are disconnected/damaged, or it's the headunit. There isn't a fuse between the headunit and the speakers.

If you haven't disassembled a door panel before it can seem daunting, but actually they're really easy to do. In fact you could probably just pop off the bottom of the panel and pull it outwards a bit from the door, enough to see the speaker holes, without taking the whole thing off.

I may be wrong, but I think only the GT came with four speakers, hence no rear speakers in yours.

At least in 2008 this is false. Don't now about the GX, but the GS had 4 speakers.

Edit: huh, you're right. Didn't know the GX only had two speakers standard. Really was a stripper.

Darn, looks like I'll have to buy aftermarket speakers then. I'll pop the door panel off to have a look just in case.

With aftermarket speakers, do you think the cables will be run to the rear door for the speakers? Or am I looking at having to run cable from the headunit somehow?

Thanks for the info so far!

With Mazda, usually the wiring is already there. They saved $0.50 on the speakers and added a reason for people to buy a GS.

That's great! And yeah I'm getting that feeling a lot with the GX model haha.

I'll have a look and see about installing new rear speakers.

Do your GF a favour and get ALL new speakers Frt and back. Even the cheapest Pioneer co-axials at $50 a pair will sound light years better then the paper oem crap. Also if you splurge another $16 or so you can get speaker baffles (Plastic/foam cups you mount on the back of the speakers), which will improve bass and midrange pretty nicely.

I don't know about the Gen 1's, but the speakers that come in the Gen 2's aren't actually that bad... I'm impressed with them, at least compared to the ones that are stock in my girlfriend's 2012 Civic.

Well the 1st gen speakers were pretty sad, basically paper cones, foam surrounds, small magnets, definitely not quality. Probably cost Mazda $5 a speaker lol. I'm just suggesting for a measly $100 or so he can really improve the fidelity of the system, and I'm sure the GF would appreciate it.

    Oh of course.

I would always recommend a deck first before upgrading the speakers.

But if he has no rear speakers I totally agree to invest in a decent set of aftermarket's.

Sorry that this is off topic to the original post, but just wanted to say that gen2 speakers I find are the best I've ever heard for oem speakers.

Bass is really good considering stock and sound quality is not bad at all.

When I drive with people, they always seem to compliment me on the audio, and I find it funny when I tell them it's oem

the GX came with two on the front door and the GS came with 4. And the speakers that come stock with it are the biggest pieces of garbage cardboard speakers lol.
They say I'm an addict but I don't have a problem with alcohol or drugs. I'm an addict because I can't live without bass. Car audio is my addiction. And it will never change.
