Default Review: 2016 Mazda 3 GT AT 4DR

I was happy with a 2013 GS MT but a left-knee injury prompted me to get an AT even though pressing the clutch pedal was not a problem.. yet.

The GT with the 2.5L engine has more zoom. However, in the default AT mode it seems sluggish on the highway. That is, constant pressure on the gas pedal does not give constant speed. I assume that is for engineers to brag about fuel economy. Sport mode is more responsive. I think sport mode should be the default. Then there are the paddle shifters on the steering wheel. I only tried these briefly but it may become my default mode in future.

This car has luxury package which includes BOSE sound. This BOSE has less distortion than the 2013 version. There is no woofer on the rear deck and no electronics box under the passenger seat. The bass sounds muddy because of all the vibrating plastic in the dash and door panels. I am fussy about audio quality but I call it good enough since that is the nature of audio sound in cars. Speakers need to be in sealed boxes of 3/4" high-density particle board. I installed such an amplified sub-woofer box in my old 2006 Honda civic. It was truly good.

One annoyance is the lack of a switched 12vdc socket to power my dash cam only when driving. The 2013 had a convenient socket for that but the 2016 only an always-on socket in the arm rest. A useless CD player occupies the space needed for a convenience socket. There are 2 USB jacks. One of them is always on.

This car is deep blue mica, a color I never had before. I added dark alloy 18" wheels. Looks great.

After two weeks, I am impressed with the extra zoom of the GT. The 2016 Bose has better sound than the 2013 Bose. Less distortion and better mid-range.

I created a public photo album. How do I include it here?
