Default Mazda recalling 2.2M vehicles due to trunk damper corrosion issue

    http://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe...ticle31658190/

The Japanese auto maker said it was recalling around 390,000 vehicles – including the Mazda 3, which is available as sedan and hatchback, and the CX-3 SUV crossover in Japan – to fix the damper stays on their rear gates, which may corrode and break if exposed to salt.

Mazda said it planned to recall an additional 1.8 million vehicles in overseas markets over the same issue, although it declined to give a regional breakdown. The affected vehicles were produced between December 2007 and December 2015.

This has to do with the rear dampers for the trunk for those that only read headlines. Speaking of that, headline update to reflect article.

"Mazda Motor Corp. said on Thursday it would recall a total of 2.3 million vehicles worldwide over potential problems with their rear gates, along with a separate issue involving diesel engines.

The company also announced a domestic recall of around 110,000 vehicles produced between August 2014 and August 2016 including the Mazda 3 and CX-3 over a computer problem with their diesel engines.
The nation’s fifth-largest auto maker sold roughly 1.5 million vehicles in the year ended March, mainly in North America."

This will be great for my trunk, as it is completely inoperable at the moment... won't open from doorsill, keyhole or emergency release from. Inside the trunk.

Someone told me it has to do with the struts that keep the trunk open I believe on hatchbacks

Wouldn't be the first time a manufacturer didn't advise the MoT of a recall.

I talked to my local dealer, they know of it, but there are no available parts yet, so they haven't given out exact cars yet (they said mine was included, but couldn't do anything about it yet)

Contacted Mazda about it last week, and after a few days they gave me the same B.S. answer again : no parts.

They explained that's why they haven't even sent a letter to the owner. How can they get away with not even warning the owners of the potential danger from the hatckback slamming shut on you?

I received a letter today from Mazda informing me my vehicle was part of the recall; however no parts were currently available and that I was to wait for a second notification sent by them before going to a dealer to schedule a repair (at no cost).

Further questions about this campaign are to be directed to their Customer Experience Center at 1-800-263-4680

This letter listed the following affected vehicles:

    2013-2016 CX-5 Prod Dec 15 2011 to Dec 26 2015
    2010 - 2013 Mazda 3 including MazdaSpeed 3 Prod Nov 18, 2008 through June 11 2013
    2012 - 2016 Mazda 5 Prod Oct 26, 2010 through Dec 26 2015
    2016 CX-3 Prod March 10 2015 through Dec 26, 2015

Got mine in the mail a few weeks ago. Dealer even called me and asked me to bring in the car asap. I asked them if they would pay for the tow there and back and they said no lol.

After I insisted with Mazda Canada CS, they told me they made a "special arrangement" for me with a local dealer. By chance, it happens to be the dealer closest to my home. I called, and they said no such special arrangement was made, and I'll be 17th on the waiting list... whatever. Can't say I'm surprised, Mazda and fiasco go hand-in-hand.

So after more confusion, Mazda Canada called me back, saying the dealer would call me within 3 days. They did, the next day, and gave me an appointment.
The fix took 20 minutes (I guess it's basically 4 bolts out, 4 bolts in). So I guess after all that confusion and wasted time, they came through on that end.

But the whole thing was just a brutal reminder of how unpleasant it is to visit a stealership. During my visit, I barely hinted on other issues I've had with the car and it was clear all they saw was dollar signs... like "we can fla$h the $oftware and $ee if it help$". I just said Thank you, don't call me I'll call you and left. Bottom line, I guess my car won't see a Mazda technician for another fews years, until the next recall. I've only been twice since I took the delivery, both times for things under warranty/recall.

My wife was at our local dealership the other day with our 3, and asked (again) about making an appointment for her Mom's CX-5 for the recall (she's 86, so we do all car-related stuff).
So the deal was, they had some in stock, but were booking appointments to get it done two weeks from now. By which time they expected to have run out again. And they had no idea if/when they'd get more.
After some grumbling, the dealer finally agreed to book the appointment in 2 weeks, but hold one of the kits. We'll see if that plays out.

If it'd been me, I'd have just told them to give me a kit now, and I'll carry it in the back seat until the appointment.
