    Default Roof rust

Recently i discovered my dads car has some small paint rust in his roof... the question now is, will roof vinyl wrapping prevent the rust from spreading?

Once rust starts, it's like a cancer...it'll spread. Wrapping won't do much to help. You'll need to sand off that rust before it starts spreading.

Posting a few pics would help. It could simply be rust from rail dust.

the mazda touch up paint pens are absolute garbage I end up taking the tips off the pen and inserting a toothpick in the end to get globs of paint out so i can fill small rock chips.

Bubble rust, that is not a good thing. That needs proper sand and repaint to remove.

Little stone chip could be the source, anyway that moisture can get under the paint to bare metal.

So would doing a full roof repaint job is a key to eliminate the rust?

Well, it will probably be the easiest way. You could try to scuff those areas down, but it has already raised paint. So the best bet is to strip the roof down, and repaint.

I do not know off hand. But to prevent rust it should definitely be done by a professional. They would take it back to bare metal, make sure there is no rust there, and the respray it.

It probably is to do the whole roof. What year is the car btw? It may be worth trying to repair it by yourself its not that difficult.

I have a friend who has a body shop I could ask him for an rough estimate, but the shop is located here in Scarborough.

A shop would probably be able to do it around $1000-$1500. They would sand down the trouble areas and spot prime, then repaint the whole roof. That's the only way to stop it.

@Ryekawa -I talked to my friend and showed him your pics. He said "rough estimate $500 to grind down rust to metal and repair, and paint the complete roof."

Let me know if your interested and I'll pass on his info.

    Have you decided?

Anyone needing some work; body or paint I highly recommend my friend Yusuf at Legacy Auto Designs. 647-707-5820 in Scarborough.
Family run and owned business for decades and his son is one of the best painters I've ever seen, a natural.

Yes I agree the Mazda touch up paint is horrible, barely any paint came out. I have a white Mazda 3 and there are lots of little stone chips that are starting to rust, I'll probably clay bar the rust out and put a wrap on the roof

prolly a good idea to touch up the chips before you wrap it. in case any moisture gets in there and it rusts out

I had a similar rust situation with my older 2005 Corolla... I sanded it down lightly painted and applied a small piece of paint protection film over top... never got any worse over the course of a few years... if you can seal water from getting in it should slow it down
