Default Failing to respond to an emergency vehicle: Possible Ticket

    Hi,

I am a newbie to this forum and I got in to troubles already.

I picked up a friend last night at the Go Train station and quickly drove her home as it was rather late. I was merging on to the freeway and there was a vehicle pulled over by a traffic cop. Both vehicles were staying still and the cop had his emergency light flashing.

The problem was, both vehicle stopped right at the intersection point of the merging lane and the freeway and there was another vehicle behind me. It was hard to slow down cause I did not want to get a rear end collision. I braked slightly and steered left to pass both vehicles. Driving a few minutes I realized the traffic cop followed me so I pull over to the side and here is the interesting story:

    - He bragged about how dangerous I was driving and that I put the lives of officers on duties like him at risk.
    - I answered him in the most honest way and I let him know it was never my intention to run over him.
    - He told me the penalty is 450$ plus 3 demerit points. I reluctantly agreed.
    - He said "450$ and 3 demerit points, all set?" I answered yes.

Then he went back to his vehicle and suddenly turned off the emergency light and drove away. He never actually checked my driving license.
I wonder if he noted my plate number and will send me a 450$ plus 3 demerit points ticket by mail later or I got off the hook for being honest with him?

Can you please advise because it seems that 450$ plus 3 demerit points falls into "failing to slow down for another emergency vehicle" which is a serious offence and I am not sure I did something too too serious.

    Thank for your input.

thats a weird encounter but if he didnt take your driver's license then i am not sure how he is going to give you the demerit points

That's weird, the first thing they ask you is for your license and registration. If you pulled over one lane or gave him room/ slowed down then he shouldn't give you a ticket, however if you are doing 120km/h and slow down to 90km/h that doesn't count, I heard (don't quote me) but you have to slow down to 60km/h if you do not move over a lane. He won't send you a ticket by mail, that's more red light cameras that do that. Sometimes they can enter a warning and asscioate it with a liscence plate, but no ticket will happen for that. This is not a formal warning though.

I couldn't understand it either. I am new in Canada so certain practices are still new too me. He probably realized I am a new immigrant and my mistake did no harm to anyone.
Yet he was really firm when saying "450$ and 3 demerit points, all set?". Is there anyway I can check officially or I need to keep on checking my mailbox?

    Thanks

    Just my

He may have been trying to scare you as a form of teaching you a lesson which seems to have worked - as he never took down your license/registration/insurance.

He also may have received an important call which he chose to respond to, than to continue with you.

I wouldn't worry about it at all unless you are notified of an offense by mail. This sounds like it was a warning. Sorry that happened to you as it did, but make sure to use extra effort to go around the parked police vehicle next time to avoid that again.

If he didn't place a ticket in your hand at that traffic stop, you're not getting a ticket.

It was a warning, but you probably deserved it. The #1 way cops get killed on the job is by people hitting them during traffic stops. That's actually the most dangerous part of the job.

Same law also applies to tow trucks, now, so slow down and change lanes when you're passing ANY emergency vehicles that are stopped.

The other vehicle behind you is not your concern, that driver is responsible to not run into you.

You got a warning but take it heart because it is a stiff penalty and an even stiffer one if you hit someone .

    Hey fleetwoodjazz,

First thing first, welcome to TM3 family,

As others have pointed out, this was just a warning. Many officers & other first responders have been struck during roadside assistance. If you can't change lanes & need to slow down, put on your hazards. Some people are blind and only see the car in front & miss the flashing lights to the side of the road.

    Have a good weekend
