    Thumbs up Speedy windshield repair

Took my car to Speedy Auto Glass on Dundas and Dixie in Mississauga to fix a bad rock chip after insurance said they would take care of it. Adam is the head technician and owner of the shop and he's a consummate professional. He showed me every step of the repair process as well since it wasn't busy. He's a super nice guy who I can trust to do a great job and I had to make sure he got a glowing review here.

Obviously there's still a trace of the chip left but the windshield is back to its original strength and I don't have to worry about the crack spreading.

Just wondering why you didn't get it replaced using insurance.

Often windshields are covered under comprehensive, and don't effect your policy, and have no deductible

Under my policy I would've had to pay for it. I'll probably switch providers sometime soon.

Not sure what policy you have but every policy that I've ever had has a deductible on comprehensive coverage. The only coverage with no deductible is repair of windshield chips since the chip repair is a lot cheaper for the insurance company than replacing the windshield.

I've had to have several windshields replaced over the years for various reasons, and in every case I could deal directly with a windshield shop and pay *less* than what my deductible would be without involving insurance at all.
My 2014 M3 has an unrepairable chip on the passenger side, and I plan to replace it before Winter (or when it starts to crack, whichever comes first). And I already know that the replacement cost will be around $300 all-in. With a $500 deductible, involving my insurance company would be dumb.

I know of people who've had a lot of comprehensive claims (windshields, animal strikes, etc), and suddenly found that their insurance company isn't interested in renewing them anymore.

I'd imagine it's possible to buy a comprehensive policy with no deductible. But the policy cost would be significantly higher, of course. You're basically paying the deductibles up front, before making claims. If you make no claim, it's money tossed away. People are wise to get their broker/agent to give them quotes at various deductible levels and find their own "sweet spot".

Obviously I wouldn't have gone through insurance if I needed to replace the windshield. I'm also not going to throw away $400 on a full replacement or waste a windshield that can easily be fixed.

Carefully read your policy when it comes up for renewal in 2017. Deductibles were bumped to $500 upon renewal automatically. You can retain your old coverages but that will mean a higher premium.

Called them before I make go replace the windshield, the rep said won't affect your premium at renewal.
I guess this is only the 1st replacement, if someone constantly replace a new windshield every month or so. The insurer will going to do something about it.

My Lexus OEM windshield (with rain, heat sensor, lane departure and steer assist) cost $12xx + labour and material, comes to $17xx. That's a big amount if I have to pay out all from my pocket.
Insurance, that is what you pay every month for. People are just too scare to make claims.

I've had this done once. Immediately after the repair you could barely see it at all. But a year later and it looked like it did when it was a new chip.

Mine has been fine since last year. I normally would have replaced my window, but I was just concerned it would happen again with the 130km a day I drive.

Yep, can confirm the chip is very visible now. As long as it's safe I don't mind, can't justify replacing the windshield over a cosmetic annoyance :/

Also I switched to a much better coverage with Sonnet so next time this happens, I'll just get a new windshield.

For those that went through the insurance route (replacement or repair) via comprehensive, did anyone see their annual rates/premiums increase at renewal time as a result of this claim?

Trying to decide between paying the deductible (via claim) v. paying it out of pocket.

    TIA

Yes I made a windshield claim. Yes my premium increased.
Is it increased because of the comprehensive claims? Probably not.

Insurer run the renewal quote base on the claim rate with the model the car your geographic area, factor in your personal info as well.
Over the past years, my insurance premium increased even I made 0 claims, what gives.

I would see it as if the car is new, you will keep it for a while. Replace it with an OEM glass and claim insurer.
It is a used car and it is not in a great shape anyway, probably pay out of pocket and get a non-OEM glass.

thanks for sharing your experience. sounds like it was factors beyond the 'comprehensive' claim.

out of curiosity, what % did your premium increase by?

and thanks for the advice at the end.

I would not say the windshield claim caused the increase. Like I said on the last post, my premium increased in some years even I made 0 claims, 0 traffic conviction. It has a lot to do with the market factor that we the consumers cannot control.

It was a small increase and even with the increase, No other insurers came close to the rate we got, so it could be just an adjustment.

My OEM Lexus windshield glass cost $1500+. Minus my $300 deductible, it is still worth to do the claim "EVEN" they increased my premium by $15-20 a month.

Dont claim if its a simple chip repair. I hand 2. One was 1/4 inch and the other 1 inch chips.
$60 cash to inject both at WIND windshield repair. I used the mobile one at Canadian tire on sheppard and Leslie

I claimed and it didn't affect my premium. Switched providers shortly after.
