    Default Powder coating

Now that the winter season is here, I decided to get my beat up RX8's repaired and coated. I ended up heading over to Quy's Coating to have him repair the rash on the wheels and coat them gunmetal. Quy did an incredible job with the repair and I love the end result. Every wheel had a solid 1/4" ring of curb rash around the entire diamteter and you can't even tell it was ever there now. Anyone looking to get this kind of work done, head over to Quy.

    Cheers!

    Photos for interest.

Whatever it was, it must be better quality then my last set from ST. You get what you pay for.

    What size are your rims?

I got quoted $900 by this same place to do a set of brand new 18's...can't help but wonder if it's cause I'm a chick. I fail to understand why "stripping and repair" is mandatory on brand new out of the box rims....

I don't think Quy discriminates because you are a chick. Stripping is highly recommended. He has to remove the original coatings and colour - sand blast, walnut blast, and often times chemically dip the original rims. Then he can powder coat your new rims.
Price can also be impacted by a few other things, the end colour might be a multi stage. Doing the barrel one colour, and spokes a different, high gloss finishes requiring multiple layers of clear.

Okay see now that helps because other than that I felt completely perplexed because I hadn't even asked for a custom colour or multiple colours. I had the "chick" worry because everywhere online I see mention of this place nobody seemed to have paid more than $500 but all the reviews and posts were from guys.

$900 is donkey. I get the feeling (and this is my opinion) that Quy really doesn't focus on retail work (i.e. rims). I mean - if you're willing to pay $550-$600 to powdercoat your rims - he'll do it but he's not really looking to compete in that arena etc.

That being said - he does very good work and it does hold up to the elements. He did a set of rims for me (18's with 10 spokes) that I use for winters and I am on my 3rd winter with no issues - they look as good as the day i got them and i really don't maintain them much at all (no waxing and I wash them infrequently)

But $900 doesn't make sense unless you have some type of complex pattern that's going to take additional labor to blast. Any rim is going to have to be blasted in order to be coated...whether it's new or old...so I am perplexed as well.

You can try Mike @ Bright Side Customs....apparently he does very good work and he charges in the $450 range. I haven't used him - but I was thinking of using him for my next rim project in the spring instead of just paying Quy's prices.

I just used Mike at Bright Side. He did my 18's in a gun metal grey. Nice job fixed the curb rash. Overall very nice job.
