Default Excessive Noise / Humming from Winter Tires

    Hi

I am getting annoying humming noise after switching from the 18" GT rims to a set of 16" steel rims with 205/60/16 Federal Himalaya Ws2. I'm The humming noise pops up at 82, 92 and 102km/h....I also get the typical aggressive tire tread noise at most other speeds. I don't get this noise from my OEM set of wheels. Any idea what it could be? I'm suspecting it's just the crappy & cheap Federal Himalaya's.

    Thanks

Tires could be hard if there a used set, also if there directional they could have been mounted wrong unfortunately. I feel your pain. If nothing a put up above get them balanced

I got the set new, late last month. They're directional; I brought it back to get them re balanced and did an alignment as well. Wheel vibrations are gone but the humming noises at those same speeds remain. I guess it's just the tires

It's also probably because the tires are new and needs to "shape" itself according to the road or your alignment, etc. It'll be gone once you drive around.

Just keep in mind that when you do your tire rotation, the humming sound will be back

From what I can see, I'd say it's the tires and the particular tread pattern and rubber composition.

It's just the nature of winter tires, especially ones on the cheaper side. I've had expensive and cheap over the years and they all have their own "characteristics".

If you were looking for the same feeling as an all season then you will be disappointed. My suggestion is just put up with the humming for the time being knowing that you will be safer this winter on the tires.

Wider tread and sipes = louder road noise. Also equals better handling in snow and ice

U should here my truck Mud and Snow tires on the highway. It sounds like I’m dragging chains behind me

Thanks for the replies, I do believe it's the nature of the tire at this point. First set of tires I've got on the cheaper side and although they were pretty good during the Christmas eve snowstorm (storming through Dufferin St, Uphill on unplowed roads), I've had Hankook ipikes and Continentals on my old cars with similar tread patterns and were quieter.

Nope. Narrow and tall not wide and low, snow tires are better on snow and ice.

I was talking about tread spacing
