Default 07 mazda 3 oem lug nuts too short?

I replaced the front and rear pads and rotors over the weekend on my 07 Mazda 3 GT and usually on all other brake jobs I did on other cars when I put the new rotor on I use a lug nut to hold it in place. In this case I noticed that the oem mazda lug nut was too short to reach the rotor and I thought it was rust stopping the lug nut from going in all the way so I cleaned the wheel stud really well so that when I would tightened the lug nut it would hold the rotor but when I did do that, the wheel stud poke through the end cap of the factory lug nut. I then had some doorman lug nuts that I bought to replace some factory ones that were rusty and noticed that the doorman one is a bulge nut and is also longer. When I tried the doorman nut it can hold the rotor on no problem. The factory lug nuts hold the wheel on no problem once it is installed over the rotor as there is enough thickness and clamp force once tighten down. Has anyone else notice this?

The rim, when installed, takes up the gap between the rotor and the lug nut. That's why the rotor is loose when you don't have the wheel installed but are using the lug nuts.

They aren't really meant to hold the rotor on tight without the wheel on.

Ok I seen some youtube videos where they put a spacer and the lug nut on top just to hold the rotor in place while replacing brakes. It's the first car that I have come across like this, all other cars the factory lug nut was long enough to hold the rotor on without the wheel installed.
