Suspecting a rust spot, seeking advice

Hi all,

So the past weekend I went to swap my summer tires to winter ones.
Afterwards, I found 2 elevated bump along the lower left corner of my driver's door
UPDATE**i scratched off the paint just to confirm





I went to a body shop and asked about it, the personnel took a quick look and tells me it's rust, but seems to be on the surface; to repair it, he would have to repaint the whole door, $450.

What would you advise in this situation.

Get the door repainted before it gets worst

Depending on your budget. Get your shop to repaint and treat the rusted area.... or
Use some Krown product ...it stops rust from expanding further.
Quick fix before the winter and salt ...Get a can of the Krown ($20) rust proofing.
Spray the rust (do not worry some more paint may flake off since it will have to be repainted or touched up anyway.)
Try to spray behind the rust spots. There should be openings at the bottom of the door. Spray a good amount into the door.
Or
Go to Krown ($129) and get the whole car sprayed . Then 2020 get it done again (in August ..heat makes product penetrate deeper
into the metal).

they seem to insist on repainting the whole door, and not just sand locally and repaint. Is it because of business or it's technically not good to spot treat?

yes the entire door will have to be painted, it’s cheaper and easier to paint entire door then a body shop to try and blend it in.

In my opinion and experience if you spray them once every six months the rust will barely expand or bubble. Come four years from now when you get rid of the car you may be glad you didn't spend the money to repair all that.

As the spots are in such an area that is normally dirty, I'd carefully clean them out with sandpaper, apply some etching primer with a small brush and top it with some touch up paint.

All body shops will want to paint the entire door for a professional job.

But do it before winter really hits.

Yeah, sucks that I live in a condo, need to do the work outdoor when it gets warmer. Maybe week of nov 17 when it gets warmer.
