which one of the CAi has a bad possibility of hydro-locking among them? would you be able to use the AEM bypass valve on the K&N intake? or get the complete cold air from K&N and i can switch from short ram to full cold air

Magnaflow, Eibach prokits, Koni Sport, Vibrant, TWM shifter, Panasonic, Kicker, Kenwood, Clarion, Soundstream, Magnum Cross drilled Hawk pads AEM CAI, KEI FIN7, painted calipers.
Sedans are much more prone then hatches, first off. I think the Injen one bends leave the filter higher? AEM and K&N are in the same spot. Mazdaspeed has the hydroshield.
The bypass from AEM is $$$, might as well just get a $8 pre-filter.
Diesel tractor...
Yes, the K&N Typhoon kit has an extra connection so you can make it a SRI or CAI whenever you want. I have read, because of that, performance isn't that good.
I got some quotes for a store here in ktown, AEM/K&N are the same price, and Injen is $10 more. But the Mazdaspeed design is identical to AEM but with a splash shield. I'm partial so i'm gonna get Mazdaspeed when I can, Flippy has good prices![]()

on the mazda3forums, theres alot of sedans that have had wet filters after a rainfall and had CEL's because of it. Until it dries out. I read it as, the sedan's headlight position is different then that of the hatch. The hatch light is positioned further back, covering the filter. Water path on the sedan from the hood drips onto the filter. Apparently some weather stripping will go a long way.
The only cases of Hydrolock I've seen and heard of are due to driver error. In reality, you've just got to be aware of the driving conditions and be careful. That being said, mistakes can happen, and I think that the K&N might be a good design for those more prone to worrying among us![]()
Car washes and rain should not create the conditions for Hydrolock. Only submersing a good portion of the filter should do that..... so stay out of deep standing water
Injen makes Hydroshields that can fit any cone type filter. It repels water, but will not prevent hydrolock type occurances.

Ya, the only proven case on M3F was one person and user error was the cause. You'd have to drive through some serious puddles (lake Ontario) to do a hydrolock. Most you'll get is a CEL from excess moisture (wet filter, puddle at the "U" bend).
cta_patrique's suggestion for the pre-filter is best, maybe some duct tape on the wheel vents too if more concerned.
How many times do you people drive into the lake or a swap? If never then I don't think hydro lock is something you should be worrying about.
Like Patrick already said, you need to submerge the filter. Its not something to worry about.![]()
no need to waste money on the bypass
No need for the bypass...
a pre-filter would be a better bet,
the key factor is, how low are you drop?
I would be a bit more cautious if you were lets say 2" or lower....
The Hydrofoam from Injen is pointless because of how the water drains on our cars. unfortunately the water drains down right above most intakes and thats why people are popping cels. You have to worry more about covering the filter from the top rather then from the bottom. The Hydrofoam is only water repelant so if the water consistantly hits in one spot that cover wont do a thing. As people said it would need to be submersed in water in order to cause the hydrolock but I do suggest covering all filters from above no matter on model. I have seen it happen on both.
As for that, Mazdaspeed is the only intake that has a properly built cover to protect it from such problems.
Hope that helps some...
thanx guys that will make me sleep now lol. actually what is funny K&N went up in price up here but the AEM is still at $329 K&N is priced at $390. i asked performance improvements apparently they deal with AEM directly thats why theyre cheaper.
I had my Injen CAI installed yesterday.
Is their a simple mod I can do to cover it from above. I head about using cardboad wrapped with foil, but I have not seen a picture. Have any pics or dimensions. Any sort of custom products?
Hydo locking is a lot easier then driving into a lake. I had an Iceman CAI on my Avenger and if any one remembers 2 summers ago the GTA had a massive rainstorm in which the DVP was flooded and closed. On that Friday night I was on the Gardiner in the left lane and there was big time puddles in the left and middle lanes, just the splashing of the tires through these puddles caused me to hydro lock. Bent 2 rods and the cheaper alternative was a motor swap. Unfortunately or maybe fortunately 3 months later that motor let go resulting in my buying 2 MZ 3's.
Short story is, your motor can handle small amounts of moisture, car washes and the resulting dripping water is really nothing to worry about, splash water from a puddle and you may end up 3 grand poorer. If you get a CEL who cares, that's usually easily correctable, you need to worry about bending rods and hearing a snare drum tapping in the block, or cracking pistons and rings.
That being said, I just ordered a CAI for my Sedan, if there is puddling on the majors, I'll just take my wifes Sport![]()
I wash my car 2 times per week at a touchless car wash. No problems at all. The company I work for specializes in door hardware. Will install some heat resistant weather stripping and post pics.
A friend of mine has the K and N and he says it sucks compared to the Injen. You feel a lot of torque increase. Especially when driving at around 110 in 5th gear, push the gas and she will get up to 140 really fast for passing.
2006 Mazda 3GT sedan
Injen CAI, JDM ground wire kit and voltage regulator, SPYN JDX rims with 225/40/R18 Falken 912's, Vibrant strut bar, Eibach Pro kit.
Navigon 7100 GPS, Beltronics STi RD, Valentine One, LPP laser jammer.
My 3 is stored during the winter.
IS there a way you an only buy the hydroshield from the Mazdaspeed for instance ? I'd like to have it on my AEM..
2009 DMG Subaru WRX265
You could honestly make the sheild instead of buying it ... just go buy sum sheet metal and bend it ... thats all the MS sheild is ... i was kinda disapointed when i saw exactly wut i boughtbut the intake itself is very nice. Just the sheild seems alittle cheap

Could you elaborate on how to make a hydro shield? Isn't the Injen one like a sock?
