Ford's Focus To Get New Engine

DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) -- When the new Ford Focus compact arrives in U.S. showrooms early next year, it will come with a new 160-horsepower, two-liter four-cylinder engine that will help the car get a projected 40 miles per gallon on the highway, Ford said Wednesday.

The engine will have high-pressure direct gasoline injection into the cylinders, which makes it more efficient than earlier engines. The Focus engine also will have variable valve timing to adjust the intake and exhaust valve openings for maximum efficiency, yet the car also will accelerate quickly, the company said.

"Drivers will notice improved low-end power and better fuel economy. And there are benefits they won't notice too, like reduced emissions overall, especially at part-throttle," Jamie Hanshaw, a Ford valve timing technical specialist, said in a statement.

The new Focus, which will compete with the top-selling Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic, also will be able to run on E85 ethanol, a blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. E85 generally is cheaper than gasoline, but also less efficient.

The new engine has 14 percent more horsepower than the current Focus with 140. Gas mileage with a six-speed automatic transmission is expected to rise six miles per gallon above the current automatic Focus, which gets 34 mpg on the highway.

Ford also said it gave the Focus electric power steering, eliminating the drag of an engine-driven belt to run a power steering pump. Other belts that drive the water pump, air conditioning compressor and alternator have new friction-reducing technology, the company said.

The new engine will be made at a factory in Dearborn, Mich., while the Focus will be assembled in Wayne, Mich., near Detroit.

I am not an engine knowledge book, but sounds a lot like the DISI engine from Mazda without the Turbo.

ford sold off more of its stake in mazda, and mazda chose to go with toyota's hybrid system vs. fords so I don't expect the partnership to be as inclusive as it once was. DISI is a form of fuel injection, many engines have it but it doesn't make them similar in any way and I would speculate this engine and the 2.3 turbo in the ms3 have nearly nothing in common outside of the technology used for fuel delivery

The selling of shares in Mazda signals a new period for Ford which is focusing its efforts on creating more cars based on the Ford system without having to rely on Mazda or other partners.

this is basically the same feul delivery system that they use for the new "clean diesels" vw has this along with Hyundai in a couple of their gas engines and the power output you can get is significant. Especially when you also get better feul economy. To bad ford will screw it up by putting in a mushy suspension, and "dead" steering wheel, at least for the north american market

These are supposed to be "world" cars.. guess they can always be "americanized" for the fatter people on this continent though

Wider seats (no support)
Cushy suspension (poor handling)
Auto transmissions (very rare in rest of world)
Bigger engine (to pull 300lb guy and wife and kids (2000lbs)) - killing fuel economy
Sixteen airbags (americans are big on perceived "safety")

Most of these will add to the cost of the vehicle

Then of course there is "delivery fee" and "pdi" and "air conditioning tax" and whatever else they can think of, then HST on top of all that.

Why can't we have OTR pricing like the UK?
