View Full Version : Brake Dust on Rims

Got my M3 Sport GT yesterday and I\'m exceptionally happy with it.

My only complaint so far, and this has been mentioned quite a bit in other threads, is the brake dust. After only 100kms, my rear rims were more black than gray. Front rims were a bit dirty, but not quite as much. I sure hope this improves once the discs are worn in a bit, because I really hate dirty rims but I\'m not really into having to wipe them off on a daily basis.

Should I expect this for the life of the car? Is there anything I can do to help the situation?

As an aside, what cleaning products to you use on your rims / tires?

If you wax your wheels you will find that the dust will come off very easy the next time you wash your car. It\'s been working for me, and the 6 is well known fo rit\'s super dusty brakes.

It will more then likely reduce if you change the brake pads.

I thought the 05 model had already improved this problem.......coz my 3 doesn\'t seem to have any brake dust problem even when I am only used to wash/wipe it once a month.......:)

lol.. Not my 2005. Break dust is inevitable on mine...

I\'ve also heard that waxing helps get off the dust when washing the car quicker.

Easiest fix: Refrain from using your brakes...

I have a 04 model and after my rear brakes were replaced (by the dealer because of some wierd noise coming from them), the brake dust problem is now gone. Hope this help.

There is a TSB on squeaky brakes. I had the work done by a dealer-no charge-this spring (not exactly sure what they did) on my \'04Sport. For about a month after the work was done the funny grinding, groaning, squeaking brake noises went away but unfortunately they are now back. However, whatever work they did on my brakes this spring managed to solve my brake dust problem. No more brake dust thankfully.

BTW---I think there is now a TSB (in the States anyway) to replace Brake Pads. I\'ll double check and if I\'m wrong I\'ll post a correction.

It\'s no different for my 06 sedan.

By the way, which brand of wax is recommended for rims? Would I be able to use the same paste wax I use on the body?

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser for Wheels and Rims, it\'s absolutely phenominal!
No elbow grease required, just wipes the crud right off.
I\'ve been pushing this product on all my friends who spend hours on their rims, saves so much time. I had to pick my jaw off the floor the first time I used it :)

TRUST!

Here is the TSB... print it and bring it to the dealer.... Worked for me. They will change your rear break pads and discs.

It will help to confirm that these bulettins are mostly for the 2004 model year.
