View Full Version : Wiper Blades

Did a search but could\'t find anything on the subject
An article in the Toronto Star Wheel section. Someone wrote the following but will just give the important details. Reader writes...
2004 Mazda3 GT purchased July 2004...wiper blades smearing that impairs visibility. Had them replaced by Mazda with new control arms to increase the pressure but did not solve the problem. The dealership is still waiting for a further fix from Mazda.
Answer from customer relations department ...
Redesigned wiper blades that rectify this issue are available and will be installed.
I have a 2005 and I feel my wiper blades also smear right from day 1. Hope the installation of the new redesigned wiper blades also cover the 2005 as well.
So if you have an 04 and the wiper smears than go in for new ones. I will try myself.
I think there was a TSB for the 2004 for this but not sure.

09-11-2005, 04:33 PM
the \'04s had the TSB.. unfortunately when i brought my \'05 in they said.. sorry you already have the new control arms :sarc and it\'s only the arms not the blades..
my driver side is ok.. it\'s the TOP of the passenger side that smears..
my solution - RAINX, it really helps.. mind you it\'s not a PERFECT solution but it works.. an alternative would be:
1) those wiper springs from crappy tire $10 for 2
2) the reflex wipers
why? well the springs/arms on teh stock wipers just do not make enough contact with the windshield and smear all the dirt/snow/salt.. but some ppl have been ok with just regular aftermarket teflon wipers..
so are you saying that there\'s a version 3 (version 1 - stock 2004; version 2 - fix for stock 2004 and stock 2005; version 3 - newest, no smears?) ? and they should be available???

This was one of those problems with our proteges as well...the far right side of the passenger wiper blade could never really wipe that well...even when replaced with reflex wipers, it would not wipe well. Other than that, everywhere else wipes perfect with the stock blade even in winter
nifty6
09-11-2005, 06:36 PM
Majic...Mine also does the same as yours on the passenger side. It might be the arm still doesn\'t have enough tension on it and maybe this next version 3, as you call it, is the next fix.
I wonder if Joe at Toronto Mazda would know if there is a new version and if so can we go in have them replaced under warranty.
Thanks

I didnt have any issues with the \'pressure\' of my wiper arm but its just the wiper blades that were ass. Went to Canadian Tire picked up some teflon wipers or something.... greatest things ever.

Yep, my only problem was with the crappy stock wiper blades. Purcahsed a set of Teflon Wipers from CT and they work just fine.

sorry to jack buttt...
speaking of wiper blades instead ofbuying N EW WIPERS + ARMS, is the actual blade part changeable/refillable?
on soem toher boards, people jsut buy a new set of \"wiping\" partsss. this wouold OBVIOSULY be a cheapeer alternative.
on topic: my 04 3 does not smear, however the little things are worn out, the wiping things lol.

I know Toyota replaces the squeegee and not the whole blade.
A lot of the aftermarket wipers that you buy ie; ones from Canadian tire, when they start to wear out, you can just replace the squeegee.

There is something that worked for me when i had my old car. I bought something from First Markham the japanese store. Its an application that you wipe all over your windows so when it rains water all slides away. IMO it\'s really effective i do\'nt find any side effects either.
The product name is \"Glaco\" its an orange weird shaped container. $16 tax included and have used it for over a year and still haven\'t ran out yet. It really helps the wiper to clear up the water easier. Because there is less friction with the wiper and the windsheild
The way it works is it\'s just a coating on your window just like waxing it. When the water lands on the window it sits on the coat and that way the wiper can easily wipe it off. One time application will last about 2 months for the windshield and the rest of the window will last up to 3 months. Because of the wipers constantly wiping the window so it thins out the layer of the coating making it last not as long as the other windows.
Please excuse my english because i suck at it :)
Hope this is not confusing and helped

Welcome to the forum Pearl_Hatch!!!
Thanks for the input... You can find a very similar product called Rain-X at canadian tire. A few people on the board use it, including myself. It does exactly what you mentioned and it\'s a little cheaper, although I don\'t know how big of a bottle you got from the store you mentioned. Just a heads up incase you run out of that stuff.

I have been using Rain-X windshield washer fluid. I think it works great, especially during the winter. A cousin of mine uses car wax on his windshield and other windows. He just takes a rag that he used to take wax off the metal panels and than wipes over the glass. He says it works. I tried it on my back windshield and the water just beads off.

Its so hard to get a perfectly clear glass after putting it on...maybe i m just lazy to buff it longer heh

The driver\'s side wiper was smearing on my 2005 and when I mentioned it at my first oil change at Westowne, they replaced the blade free of charge. Works perfectly now. There was a letter in the Toronto Star wheels section a few weeks ago with a complaint about wiper smearing on the 3. Mazda responded by saying to take the car back to the dealer for a free replacement--better than paying for one at Crappy Tire!!

Well, I purchased a case of yellow rain-x last year @ CTC. Had a super sale, it was $2 or $4 or something crazy like that. Used 1/2 a bottle.... and understood why it was so cheap... I will use MK\'s saying *It\'s ass*. It smeared so bad I couldn\'t see.
I still got 3 bottles in the garage sitting there....

it was the opposite in my honda though. I tried 3 different blades from CT and finally settled on the Honda Wipers and they were by far the best. Mazda needs to figure something out or I will go get free wipers all the time and bug them. no point going to CT. *DOH!*

has anyone had problems with wipers jumping in light rain? like the wipers are sticking and springing after they build up a certain spring load in the arm/wiper.
when i swapped in some reflex wipers i got what seemed to be more jumping on the drivers side wiper. I swapped back to regular style and i get jumping occasionally. I try to fix this in ride by squirting some wiper fluid as lubricant, but i was wondering if it\'s a problem for everyone.
i have put rain-x on the windshield, but i think it\'s mostly worn off on the front windshield by now.

I\'ve seen a 3 or 4 pack at Costco. I was able to pick up the last can of Invisible Glass at Canadian Tire @ Yonge and Steeles. You can also try Bon Ami or the Home Depot brand foaming glass cleaner, but only use them on the outside of the glass if you have tint - Invisible Glass says right on the can \"safe for tints\".

Maybe napa has this stuff? I\'m still not sure what a good car parts supplier to go to is. CTC is a bit lacking it seems. I\'ve bought from napa but not sure who else to try. Maybe there is a thread I\'m missing here to point me in the right direction.

I swear by Rain-X washer fluid, both the yellow winter stuff and the pink summer stuff. Works great.
I find that the haze most people complain about disappears in a few seconds, after the fluid evaporates off the windshield.
I also have Reflex wiper blades, installed in winter/spring of \'05, and I\'ve had no problems with those either. All points of the blades make good contact with the glass.
I had the teflon blades last winter, and they\'re GREAT new, but after a month or so, seems whatever coating was on them wears off, and they\'re just like any other blade.
We\'ll see how well the Reflex holds up this winter.
Plus I feel they look nicer than conventional blades on the M3. They don\'t stand out, they\'re nice and streamlined, I\'ll probably buy them again when they wear out.

????? Isn\'t that the point though... Why should it HAZE in the first place. I want my wiper to make a pass in front of me and be clear. I DON\'T want to be driving at 120km/hr and have my Windsheild Hazy for a few seconds!!
Not only that, the yellow is supposed to be a de-icer... why does it freeze on the window?

reflex wipers are new in the market so I just bought them to try it out, its frameless and its design (flex) is to provide continuous even pressure to reduce those streaks. its slim so it will resists snow build up.
i just dont like the look of the winter teflon wipers, they are kinda bulky thats why i didnt get them.

i gotta put my 2 cents.. and i know i\'ve mentioned rain-x already (in this or another thread) but especially in the summer rain-x is the shizzle.
you spray it once in a blue moon and it lasts a while.. on the highway, there\'s almost NO need for using the wipers (unless the rain is REALLY heavy or it\'s a mist) 70kph+ is a must as well.. i\'m still using my stock wipers and i\'m sure i\'ll be complaining in the winter (especially for the pressure at the tip of the passenger wiper) but for $1.99-$2.99 you just can\'t go wrong especially when you need SOME kind of wwf..

I agree with Maj, Rain X/Rain away does work well. I apply it to all my windows. But you have to re-apply it more often on your front windshield than anywhere else. So in my quest for clear vision in this rain I bought a Reflex wiper for the driver side and I\'m very happy with it. Today with all the rain it has been great. Just like any wiper blade I wonder how long it will last. I admit near the top end (out of my view) of the blade I get some streaks, but they quickly disappear unlike the stock blades. You can see the difference between the Reflex and stock blades after each pass.
I paid around 28 bucks (somewhat high) for the one blade, but well worth clear vision of the road.

Use the Rain-X WWF so you don\'t have to re-apply it as often.

the reflex wipers are good in the winter as they are hingless and therefore won\'t freeze up like conventional wipers.
I used them on a corrola through the winter last year and they are just as good or better than winter blades. Being a \"low profile\" blade they also don\'t have the wind lift problem that regular winter blades do.

Yeah, I doubt that CT would, which is why I asked if anyone knew about smaller dealers....preferably independently owned.

Hi guys.
I\'m loving my new 2006 Mazda 3... had it since last Friday.
I guess this is where I should post my problem/question since it is the most applicable topic heading...
It\'s been raining a lot since I got it and I noticed the other day when I was not driving with music that the right blade mechanism is very loud... annoyingly loud... I don;t think it is normal. It is loud inside the car, but very loud when I am listening to it working when I listen to it outside of the car.
Does anyone else with a 2006 model have this noise?
Thanks in advance guys.
The Mazda 3 rocks.

I noticed that after Mazda replaced my streaky drivers side wiper, there is an electronic -type beeping sound every time the wiper wipes. It is a little annoying but I usually have the music loud enough to drown it out. I am hoping that the sound does not mean that something is wrong with the motor as the wiper now works great.

thanks for the reply.
I\'m with you... I am usually driving with the music loud enough to drown out the noise... but I would like to get rid of the noise if possible.
Like I mentioned... it is loudest when I am listening standing beside the car... there is no issue with the wiper blade performance... clear and streak free... but the noise is coming from the bottom of the blade arm.. i guess it could be the motor? only the right one it seems...
I will have to bring it in to the dealer I guess for some peace of mind or repair.
but other than that... I am enjoying my first week with the car. :)

Well First off... to defend the pink carpet... It\'s Salmon, not pink....(that\'s what I tell people) Also.. It’s not mine... it\'s a rented apartment...
As for the wipers... Looking at my receipt here.. I\'ve owned them for about 3.5 hrs now, and had them installed for at least 2 hrs... Driven about 1 km with them on....
But seriously... the work better than anything I\'ve had in the past, and I expect them to work for a long time. They are seem to be built very robust. I don’t know why these weren’t for sale years ago. They contact the windshield perfectly.

i gotta say.. THANK YOU EVERYONE that bring out this probelm.. i have the same problem, the blades have been giving me trouble recently... it won\'t clean, leaving huge water marks and recently.. just jumps!!! so i thought it must be the cheap blade that caused the problem. Then this week i took the car into dealer and have service.. told him about the problem.. and say you may have a procotol to replace the wiper / arm / blade... then the technican checked it and replace BOTH arms, keeping the original blade.. and now ti works like a charm!!!! they replaced each arm for 52.50, and it\'s covered by warranty. so it\'s free.. go and ask your dealer and get it check out.

I use Rain-X on the exterior of all the glass surfaces on my 3. It works like magic and I don\'t really need to turn my wipers on unless it\'s pouring, the droplets just slides away.
Just becareful when you apply it on to the windshield that you don\'t cover the sensor (i.e. the rearview mirror area) and it should work fine. I keep my wipers in the off position all the time unless it\'s raining moderately, cus sliding droplets + our stock wipers = massive smearing!

It would be a good idea to buy the Reflex wiper blades soon, as last winter they sold out pretty fast once the bad weather arrived. I was in Canadian Tire today, and people were shopping for wiper blades, and there didn’t seam to be a lot of stock of the Reflex. I only bought a 21†last year, and this year, got the 19†so I have a matched set. The price really jumped, last year, the 21†was $20.99, now $24.99; the 19†is $23.99 - supply and demand eh.

has anybody tried the reflex wipers last friday during the \"snow storm\"?? were they <ok/great/not as expected>??
I\'m only asking because my brother mentioned to me that ice may build up on the wiper itself and make the blade stiff which may result in the blade not touching the windshield.. but then I\'m wondering if the curve on the blade will still allow the blade to touch the windshield and wipe away any snow in it\'s path.. thanks..

i returned my reflex wipers after less than one year of use....they started chattering/streaking like mofos a soon as it got cold again (bought them last yr for the winter and they weren\'t bad). I went to ct and got my 47$ back, and got a set of their springs for the wiper arms, which are a bitch to put on, but yeah the oem wipers came back to life even tho they were streaking bad when i replaced them, also they are a lot quieter, so ill just stick to the bosch ones for now with the springs!

thanks for digging that post up for us.. I guess there\'s really no #1 awesome wiper out there.. they all seem to have advantages and disadvantages but at least they have one thing in common.. they seem to be better than the stock wipers..
maybe I\'ll just buy one reflex wiper for the driver\'s side for now and see how that works out in the winter time.. I had to drive on Friday during the storm and I had big blotches all over my windshield that I couldn\'t see through but once my windshield warmed up the blotches just dissipated.. but the first 5 minutes of driving wasn\'t so fun..

um no....u have to get creative here, i went in without receipt (even tho i still have it becaude i left the oem ones in the reflex case with the receipt) since they have a no receipt return policy. which means they will return u store credit in the full ammount of the lowest ever sale price, lol they never were on sale so i got a full refund since i told them i only had them on for 4 weeks and that when it was warm they were fine but now that it is getting colder they are garbage. so if u wanna get rid of them do it now! i must say the bosch ones with the extra pressure from the springs are turning out better than the reflex ever were. i might get new ones from the dealer because i do have like 1 1mm thin streaks of water left behind on the left and 2 1mm on the right wipe areas, but no more 2 inch dirty ones that i had originaly with the bosch (without springs) and 3 months later with the reflex ones lol
btw i highly reccomend getting the wiper arm springs if u have blades that are metal since it will apply pressure evenly, i doubt they would have an effect on the reflex once since they are a bit flimsy, they are usually right beside the wipers and get the ones that are for thin square arms (blue package...there are different versions!), it is a pita to put them on and u will quaranteed put in small scratches on the wiper arms, but nothing visible unless u are puting them on and ure 2 inches away from the arm, i spent a good 20 minutes to put them on but that was 15minutes of figuring it out, but once u slip it on the first one, the second one is a breeze. also do the drivers first, its easier to fiddle with it since its closer to you!
sorry if this was hard to read lol....doin 10 different things at once :p

I think Global News will do an article on wiper blades, on Monday (November 21st), they didn’t state wiper blades specifically, but showed pictures of the Reflex and Teflon wipers. So watch Global News starting at 5:30 (but I bet they won’t show this until the 6PM news, and I am betting they will repeat on Global News Morning).

just to let everybody know, global news said that the reflex wipers are the best and that there\'s a reason why they can cost $50/pair (depending on the size of course)..
they also said that the teflons were 2nd best after the reflex..
mind you, they only tested the wipers offered by crappy tire.. so they wouldn\'t have tried any other wipers..
edit: they also said that you should be changing ur wipers every year.. I don\'t buy that statement (yet)..

This morning after all that ice on my windshield i was lazy to scrape it off since i\'m late for skoo so then i just used the liquid to melt it and wipe it. The driver side worked ok all the ice were melted and wiped away from the wiper but the passenger side was really bad. the wiper totally missed the glassed and leaves the water/ice on the windsheild.
Any suggestions? should i scrape off all the ice before i get in the car?

Has any one tried asking the dealer to move the passenger side washer nozzles farther right?. I think part of the problem of the smearing on the windshield is due to lack of washer fluid reaching the far end. When it is rainy and while driving, it does not smear that much probably because there is a lot of water getting to it.
Do you guys know how to move this nozzles?

Just take a safety pin, insert it into the nozzle and adjust accordingly. It\'s actually quite easy to do, no need to make a trip out to the dealer.

just got and installed a set of reflex wiper blades last night. all i can say is that i\'m a VERY happy girl so far. i took the car out for a test run in the rain just now. except for 3 streak marks that disappear almost immediately, the wipers do an amazing job at cleaning my windshield. the install was very simple for the driver\'s side wiper, but the passenger side wiper was a pickle. :sarc yes, this is the first time i\'ve used them, and the rain wasn\'t too heavy, so i\'ve yet to see these wipers working at full function yet. i guess they\'re expensive for a reason.

aaaah thanks... now the spray is more controlled and reaches the entire windshield.. a word of caution, the damned nozzles are VERY sensitive so use both hands and adjust them SLOWLY or else you\'ll be all over the map..
on top of all that i decided to get wiper springs as i believe the actual rubber blades (stock) are quite adequate but there\'s not enough force holding them down.. so i went to canadian tire and purhcased the model that fits 60%+ cars (i am pretty sure the box was blue/yellow) it cost me less than 10 bux and a little cursing to get the damned fuggers on.. i\'ve had these for a few months now and the performance in snow/rain is amazing (in combination with rainX) clean wipes and sometimes it scrapes of some frost!!!
here\'s what they look like installed for those who haven\'t a clue what i am babbling about

Only downfall with the clips is that you can\'t raise your wipers off of the windshield and remaining that way (ie. cleaning off snow/ice from windshield). Other than that, $10 vs. $50 for reflex wipers, hell yeah! :D

RainX is tricky you need to take a 3 step approach to get it right:
step 1 apply wait for haze
step 2 basic buff with a dry cloth + reapply (coat 2)
.... you need to wait about 20 min for everything to dry and solidify ...
step 3 take a dry clean cloth (very important that it\'s clean and lint free) and a bottle of water in a mister (windex works fine too).
You then procced to wipe off the rainX from the windsheild it\'s important you change which side you use on the cloth to maintain a clean surface and prevent swirls from forming. I recommend just misted water personally don\'t use too much because then you have to dry the windsheild.
I spent about 2 hours doing all 6 windows (but I also applied rainX anti-fog to the interior) perosnally I wouldn\'t recommend RainX anti-fog I still get slight fogging but it is much improved.
the nice thing is I have rainX washer fluid in my washer tank as well now so I don\'t ever have to re-apply it.
Maybe I\'ll do a full application in the summer.
Hope this helps, and remember with rainX a little goes along way the more you put on the more your going to have to buff off and the longer it will take to go through the dry phase. Personally I recommend 10 drops on a square of folded paper towel, and work on the 1/4 of the windsheild at a time.

I have noticed that after applying rainx to the entire windshield my autosensing wipers are slightly less responsive. Meaning they don\'t react on the first droplet of rain they see.
In stead until you get a more \"shower\" like enviroment the sensor won\'t kick the wipers in.
In all honesty I think it\'s fine since with rainx you don\'t need to have your wipers going all the time and the sensor seems to auto-adjust for this.. Maybe the sensor area stays more clean now, but keep in mind I\'m a bit anal about cleaning sensors. Since I use rainX washer fluid I don\'t think coating the sensor was avoidable.
does anyone know anything you can do to make the sensor more sensative? cause I have the suspicion the speed nob on the wiper is useless if you have auto wipers.

That sensor is very sensitive.:p Don\'t spray anything that\'ll leave a coating on the windshield.

Well it\'s not like it\'s stuck in always on. It\'s also not like it never turns on.
it just seems it\'s turning on less due to the area being more clean now.

Only downfall with the clips is that you can\'t raise your wipers off of the windshield and remaining that way (ie. cleaning off snow/ice from windshield). Other than that, $10 vs. $50 for reflex wipers, hell yeah! :D
oh crap.. so if you are using the springs then to replace the wipers u have to remove the springs?? is it really that much of a hassle to remove and re-install the springs?? I was considering getting a set.. thanks..

No you can change them just fine...i just got new BOSCH (OEM) blades on and all i had to do was hold the wiper assembly in my hand, pop out the old blade and slide the new one in. just make sure that you have the new one close at hand since i almost dropped the arm on my windshield because I had to get a new blade off of my garage table, lol totally forgot that the wiper arm wont stay vertical anymore (so just rest the arm on the MAZDA packaging for the blades) ...the windshield would have been a gonner for sure
New blades cost me $37.48 (tax inc) @ the dealership

Well my wipers on an 06\' smears as well so I applied rainX coat, and replaced the wiper fluid with rainX fluid. The combination wipes clean with the stock blades.
On my minivan I had Reflex blades with rainX fluid in the washer and it was such bliss. This one\'s 50% there I have to see if I have the time to run down and get reflex blades, Last time I was at walmart they were out of our sizes grr... both Duffering mall and A location in richmond hill.
Mind you with rainX the stock wipers wipe fine but I pampered the old minivan this car deserves the same treatment.

Just wanted to update this thread.....I took my wife\'s 3 in for service last week-end at MofT. My wife told me that the wipers are streaking pretty bad all of a sudden, and since the car is only about nine months old with 7500km on it, that shouldn\'t be happening. So I told Stanley at service about it and when I got the car back he agreed that they were streaking and that it shouldn\'t be happening so he had a brand new set installed for free. Obviously the new wipers are working perfectly, but for how long is anybody\'s guess.

Yeah but mine are streaking horribly only after 2000KM ( 2 months or less ) I rather not have to go back again and again to replace them.
I\'m just going to empty out my pockets and get a set of reflex after all. Recently even with the rainX my wipers have been streaking horribly I\'m dissapointed that these blades behave horribly in -ve temperatures
RECALL: The Canadian Tire washer fluid heaters are on recall.
I saw this flash on CP24 in their text news briefs this morning but have yet to find anything from Government sites, Pulse24.com or CanadianTire.ca itself.
