We don\'t have any Kumho snow tires yet.
We suggest Hankook W300 and W404 that offers similar tread pattern as the KW17 (asymmetric) and KW19 (deep tread block).
any 17\' tires because i plan on putting them on my stock wheels.

Sabio, The Vikings received a good review here:
\"Consumer Reports Rates Goodyear Assurance TripleTred Best in Tests of 18 All-Season Tires; Michelin X-Ice Scores Highest in Winter Tire Tests
Consumer Reports has seen substantive improvement in the performance of all-season tires since it last rated them in 2001. For example, the Kelly Navigator Platinum TE was the magazine\'s second-overall choice in 2001. In this year\'s testing against other models with newer designs, the Navigator Platinum TE dropped to ninth place overall. (The magazine rated the Michelin X-One best overall in 2001; that model was subsequently discontinued.)
All-season tires are standard on most new cars and light trucks, and they accounted for 83 percent of the replacement market in 2004.
Consumer Reports\' overall tire scores emphasize safety-related tests, including braking, handling, and resistance to hydroplaning -- where standing water causes tires to lift off the road surface, leading to a loss of grip and steering control.
In a separate series of tests, Consumer Reports rated the Michelin X-Ice best among 12 models of winter tires on the market. The Viking Snow Tech placed second, and the Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice came in third. The Michelin and Goodyear have excellent snow grip. The Viking is best suited for all-weather use and more moderate winter conditions.
Full tests and ratings of the all-season and winter tires appear in the November issue of Consumer Reports, which goes on sale Oct. 4. The complete report is also available to subscribers at
http://www.ConsumerReports.org.
For the first time in decades, Consumer Reports also evaluated all 18 models of all-season tires for tread wear. The results show that the Uniform Tire Quality tread-wear grades found on a tire\'s sidewall and the manufacturer\'s tire warranty don\'t always paint an accurate picture of what consumers can expect. CR\'s tests showed that tread wear ratings on some tires overstate their tread wear potential while other ratings underestimate that potential.
Consumers should be wary that tread wear information is supplied by manufacturers and may be different than real-world tread wear. Consumer Reports\' tread wear tests were not factored into overall tire scores; although tread wear is important, CR believes that it shouldn\'t outweigh braking, handling and other critical safety factors and should be used as a tie-breaker when comparing tires with similar overall performance.
All-season and winter tires come in sizes to fit everything from small cars to full-sized sport-utility vehicles and pickups. Consumer Reports selected a common size, P205/65R15 for its tests of both all-season and winter tires. CR believes that its ratings can be used as a yardstick for 14-inch through 17-inch sizes of the same model tires.
Consumer Reports selected the 18 models of all-season tires from upper-midlevel and premium lines with S (112 mph) or T (118 mph) speed ratings. Tread-wear warranties for those tires run from 65,000 to 100,000 miles. Prices ranged from $48 to $114 for the common P205/65R15 size.
Here are some of Consumer Reports\' Quick Picks for all-season tires. Prices shown are retail paid by CR for the P205/65R15 tires tested:
Best for all weather conditions:
Michelin X Radial, $111; Michelin HydroEdge, $100
The Michelin X Radial is a very good all-around performer, but is only available from shopping clubs. The Michelin HydroEdge performs capably but is noisier, with mediocre hydroplaning resistance.
If icy roads aren\'t a factor:
Goodyear Assurance TripleTred, $80; Hankook Mileage Plus II H725, $50; Yokohama Avid TRZ, $70
These tires do well in everything except braking on ice. The Goodyear\'s ride is very quiet.
If long tread life is important:
Yokohama Avid TRZ, $70; Michelin HydroEdge, $100; Dayton Grenadier PLE, $48; Bridgestone Turanza LS-T, $78
WINTER TIRES
Best for severe winter performance:
Michelin X-Ice, $84; Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice, $75; Bridgestone Blizzak WS-50, $86; Mastercraft Glacier Grip II, $54
The Michelin X-Ice is the top choice for harsh winters. The Goodyear and Mastercraft also provide excellent snow traction, though not as good braking on ice. The Bridgestone is also very capable on both snow and ice.
For moderate winter conditions:
Viking Snow Tech, $43
The Viking, distributed in the U.S. by Continental, is worth considering where winters are moderate or roads are cleared promptly. It handles and brakes very well on dry and wet pavement, and it rides comfortably and quietly.

Before Majoogle kicks in I\'m going to give save you and give you a straight forward answer to your question.
Snow tires are all about supply and demand. Its no different than bottled water. There is plenty when there are no natural disasters but once a hurricane warning hits, people buy out all the water.
Snow tires are the same thing. Some people tend to buy them \"when the first snow fall hits\". Now when most people think like this, do you think there will be snow tires for everyone at the time? Answer is no.
My advice is, if you can afford it, buy them now. :)
TheProfessor

Pricing will also likely rise once snow has hit the ground (also supply and demand).

WOnder why would you choose 225, assuming you\'ve a Mazda3. Narrow snow tires handle better in snow because they cut thru the snow easier. In general, keep the stock tire width or don\'t go less than the minimum width that manufacture put on the model.
Get them now if you can. IIRC, the popular KW17s were sold out late Oct / early Nov last year.

But I think size wise (16\" Mazda3 and 16\" Mazda6), the Mazda6 tires will generally be cheaper due to our bigger sidewall. I hear that lower profile tires cost more. Ah, the benefits of buying a Camry class of car. Yay for the old farts!

In fairness to you, most 6 drivers are anything but \"old farts\"! The old farts are the ones who think it\'s styling is too risque, the suspension not floaty enough, and \"fun\" not being part of their drive.

usually the higher series tires are more expensive (higher sidewall = more rubber = more expensive) unless you\'re riding on like 30series then that sidewall better be effin stiff and probably costs more

Oh my gosh, I do believe the Majoogle is WRONG!!!
I don\'t think it has to do with the cost of the rubber. It has to do with market discrimination. Sportier, low profile tires will cost more because the general premise is that the drivers of those cars will pay more. If you look at a 205/55/16 vs a 205/60/16 for the same tire, the 55 series will cost more.
When I was inquiring about Nokians for the Mazda3 in 16\", it was $70 more expensive than for my 16\" Mazda6 as the Mazda6 used a 60 series tire.
Don\'t trust me, try punching in some numbers in Tiretrends.com.
The Majoogle may be wrong on this one! Who wudda thunk?

i bow down to the master of the universe.. :p buuuutt.. before you begin the blasphemy re-read what i wrote.. :D my hypothesis: tires\' price depends on
1) amount of rubber used AND/OR
2) the profile
they kinda go hand in hand but as you said lower profile = tuner tire.. also it translates into a different compound (has to be much stiffer)
anyway.. when i checked tirerack, there were no real trends with respect to the sidewall height and price.. except for the UBER wide and low tires were always the most expensive.. in addition, the tires of very common height (series) tend to be cheaper - volume manufacturing/sales, and ones of irregular sizes will be more expensive (still the difference is pretty negligible compared to the tire\'s price)
a little sidetracking here..
it\'s funny that the tuner tire is a low profile tire as it is all for looks. higher profile tires 1) allow for smaller wheels - better acc/dec-eleration 2) allow for more uniform weight distribution 3) have a softer sidewall thus allowing for the tire to mold more during cornering providing a larger surface area, thus more grip.. oh but they look like donuts.. :p

yeah, they matched Tires23 original price with rims. now I think tires23 raised their prices of rims.. plus Tires23 is out in mississauga.. so it\'s quite the drive for me from yonge and 401..
I\'d go with e-spec but they never return my calls and it took them about 2-3 weeks to return one e-mail..
I called SpeedTech Auto and they quoted me $20 more..

I\'m guessing there are mixed feelings.. sometimes they do a good job and sometimes they don\'t.. well, I guess I still have another day or two to change my mind.. I\'m not going in until saturday morning..

Hey,
Need your opinion on something. I\'m looking at two sets of tires for my GT, either 195-55-16 or 205-55-16. From reading on the forum, people tend to say the thinner tires are better for the winter, but on the other hand, it looks like a lot of people are going with a width of 205. Any thoughts or suggestions on which size is better? Thanks in advance all.
billyfo

thinner is better, but you should still stick to similar diameter of the OEM tires, so 205 is the best if you choose 55 series profile.

All on the line of credit. If the bank will lend, I will borrow. I figure the bank has done its analysis that it would not have lent me the money if it didn\'t think I could pay it back. If it hasn\'t, I plan to sue them for negligently causing my bankruptcy.
A simple and pure argument, if you ask me.

The bank will stretch you as far as possible, they make $ on interest not on pay offs. They want you to keep that balance going as long as possible hence the 3% minimum payment.
The M3s are nice tires, I\'d get the same if I didn\'t have to buy 2 sets this year.

hankook w 300s vs. continental viking snotechs
205/55-16
which is the best bang for your buck?
which is better on snowy icey highways

I was wondering the same question, Hankook W300 vs. Vinking SnoTech!
I know the price difference is about $130.00, tax in, but performance wise...?
Oh, btw, Wheels Direct just quoted me a set of 205/55/16 Viking SnoTech on new 16\" steelies for $620.00 tax in. However, they said that W300 is all done for the season!
Tire23, do you still have W300 in stock because I am still interested in the W300.

My wife and I both have the Viking Snowtech\'s on our 3\'s and I have to say thus far (three days) I\'m impressed with their dry pavement performance. They don\'t feel nearly as soft or floaty as I had thought them to be. As a matter of fact, for regular daily driving they feel much like the RS-A\'s. I can\'t believe I\'m saying this but I\'m looking forward to some snow to see how they perform. I have a strong suspicion that come this time next year these tires will be more money.

Then they will be the Kumho KW17s of this year then. Last year they were cheap in price and no one wanted them. This year there is limited quantity and an inflated price.

I have driven a week on my Vikings... Mostly dry roads, a little wet here and there... and a lite sprinkle of snow last friday.
I have absolutely no problem with them at all. They handle like *Normal tires when the road was Dry/Wet. I had thoughts of soft mushy road feel and poor road feedback through the steering wheel when I put these on. But nope.
If you look at the tread, They look like a well thought out All-Seasons....tuned for Snow.
So far... Even though we haven\'t had any major snowfall yet.. 2 Thumbs up. Steering response and road feel are great.

Got a question for you all that got your winter tires. Excuse me if this sound stupid, with the 3 being my first car that I\'ve seriously considered getting winters I had no previous experience...
So here I go...How do I take my stock 17\' rims home once I got my winters in steels on my car? Do they fit in my sedan\'s tiny trunk?

fold the seats.. 2 wheels should fit in the trunk, 2 will fit on the backs of folded seats.. if it\'s tight you can put one in the front passenger area (move seat all the way back).. i fit 4 steelies and 4 tires (all dismounted) in the hatch and on the folded seats..
another reason you should have gotten the hatch :D
bring plastic bags (in case the place that puts on your winters doesn\'t provide them) so you can safely throw those dirty wheels/tires inside the car..

I fit two of my 17\'s in my trunk with my subwoofer still in place. The other two were in the back seat area (rear seats folded down).

I have a sedan as well... my stock 17s were put in bags. Two fit easily in the trunk and I did not have to fold the seats down to put the other two in the back seat.

Just got (the last set)? of Hankook W300 in 205/55/16 from tires23. Was originally going for the Vikings but the shipment didn\'t arrive when I got there, and I went with the Hankook instead. They seemed to be made from a harder rubber compound so I reckenoed they would be better in the dry and maybe wear slower than the softer Vikings. From the drive back, they felt like the stock RS-A, even the tread pattern looks similar somewhat.
I have to say there is great service from tires23, I highly recommend them, its worth the drive. Thanks Martin!

Just a heads up about Wheels Direct\'s service. I am now agree to the earlier post that they SUCK! :( :(

They didn\'t even offer any apology for not calling me and the attitude was BAD!

Oh man, dude, use the search feature. There has been more than enough talk about hub-centric vs. non hub-centric. Colour of steelies is simply personal preference. As for pricing on the Vikings.....many if not all rim/tire shops have run out, possibly for the season!
gigileung
11-25-2005, 12:45 AM
Hub centric means the hole at the center of the rim fits over the hub perfectly. Non-hub centric would be that the hole at the center of the rim is larger than the hub to accomodate larger hub sizes, therefore the will be some space between the edges of this hole and the hub.
Despite being inclined towards RAV4 style steelies at first because of the looks, I would go for black steelies because they weight much less than the RAV4 kind, and weight savings means less unsprung weight, better handling, etc etc.

Drove extensively in snow tonight with the Hankooks W300 and I must say I am very impressed. They were equivalent to the Pirelli Snowsport 210s I had on my earlier P5. If I only found out about the Hankooks earlier, I would\'ve saved alot of money.

There is a tire break in period where the tire is a little loud due to the new rubber. On both sets of my Kumho (ASX & KW17), I haven\'t noticed any excessive noise during this period.

For those who never heard of tire break-in period, please see the link below:
http://www.tirerack.com/winter/tech/techpage.jsp?techid=117
Please note particularly of this:
Tires are comprised of many layers of rubber, steel and fabric that require a break-in period to assure they achieve their maximum performance and your maximum satisfaction. A few hundred miles of easy acceleration, cornering and braking...at no more than legal speeds will allow all of those components time to get used to working together while the mold release lubricant wears off.

Maybe the first disappointment for tires23.
I called them up last wednesday for the hankook w404\'s 15\'s and they said they would be in for me today, called them again today for a time to install and they told me they didn\'t have them in. I asked for anything available but what they had was more than i could afford. Was put on hold, the line hung up four minutes later. I called them back re-scheduled for the 404\'s friday, said they\'ll call me in the morning to schedule my install. Well i guess i was lucky i didn\'t get the voicemail.
ieatkittens\' says their hankooks are done for the season... does that mean i won\'t get my set on friday?

I agree, these tires will not be a low priced product for long. Driving to work 5 in the morning before the plows/sanders hit was a breeze. Great control and feedback from the road. I thought the back end got a little squirmy at speeds reaching 70 km/hr, but the front felt nice like it still had good contact with the road. It wasn\'t until I got to work and heard everyone horror stories about not being able to get out of their driveway, cars in the ditches, only being to drive 20 km/hr becuase it was so slippery on the roads that I thought... Gee.. having to keep it under 70 km/hr wasn\'t to bad after all :)
