View Full Version : Noise When Reversing in Snowy Weather

Hey Guys,

I know a lot of people have posted concerns about the sqeaky brakes when reversing early in the morning on chilly days. as with many ppl here, my brakes squeak the first time and they\'re fine after that.

But now i\'ve noticed a new problem, i live in waterloo and we got our first real snow storm yesterday and I had to run a few errands so i drove (short distances) three or four times

each time i put the car into reverse and started moving i would notice it hesitate for half a second (kind of like if you try reversing with the handbrake still on) and then i\'d hear this horrible crunchin/cracking sound and then the car moves fine and i don\'t notice it again until i\'ve parked the car for more than an hour and try driving it again.

i don\'t know what this is and it\'s scary! the first time i thought i hit something....but there was nothing nearby my car. If i had to describe the sound it sounds a lot like ice breaking...(imagine an icicle breaking in half). The only thing i can think is somehow some part of the wheeel (brakes?) are freezing and the ice creaks off when i start? whatever it is it can\'t be normal.

I just got back from an oil change four days ago so if there was some glaring issue they should have noticed right?

Just to FYI (in case if helps ppl figure out whats wrong i drive a 2005 GT sedan, and i am still driving on the stock 17s (I have an appointment later this week to get the winter tires put on).

this is my first winter with the mazda I\'m not sure if anyone else has experienced this (i did a thorough scan through the forums and couldn\'t find anything...but maybe i am teh suck at searching...)...anyone know whats going on?

This used to happen to my MZ6 all the time....it is the rotors rusting and seizing. The crunching sound you hear is fairly normal from what I understand.

hmmm,

i did notice but thats not whats happening with my car at all

this is just the first instant that i reverse and it\'s gona after that. there\'s no rumbling or anything..it\'s just a one time \"crunch\" noise and it\'s gone.

if i stop the car and try reversing again it doesn\'t happen.

this only happens if i drove the car a bit and then leave it for a 20 to 30 mins.

the weather hasn\'t warmed up yet so i can\'t tell if it will do this when it\'s not snowing...i\'ll keep you guys posted if it helps.

oh and i have a manual tranny..not auto..i should have included that

Trust me, that\'s what\'s happening. The reason it only happens the first time is because you are \'breaking\' the two parts that are seized together apart. That\'s also why it happens after you haven\'t driven in a while (i.e. overnight).....the components have the time to rust.

lol

i think i caught your reply mid-edit,

i thought you were telling me that the same thing thats happening to Pearl_Hatch is happening to me...

i thought you were on crack for a second..but then i realized you made the comment on the rotors rusting ans seizing..

this seems much more likely to be whats going on...so you said its normal....anything i can do to not let it happen??

I have never been able to prevent this from happening, and as a matter of fact it would even happen after washing my 6 during the summer months! I know it\'s a terrible sound, but just try and remember that it\'s gonna happen and go easy on the gas.

Three words disc brake quiet slap some of that on the back of the pads and say goodbye to that squeal.

The things I learn hanging around here. From http://www.autobarn.net/ch05016.html

CRC Disc Brake Quiet (4 oz.)

CRC Disc Brake Quiet is specially formulated to dampen the vibrations that cause disc brake noise. It forms a water resistant, high temperature film that will absorb noise and quiet disc braking. Applied to the back of brake pads.

Thanks FLIPSPEED.
