CarPC in the works...

Well tonight I played around with my screen. By played around I mean I hacked the SHIT outta the frame to get it to fit decently in the area ;). Please keep in mind that this is ROUGH...

- The white spots are because the housing was painted black by the previous owner, and I havent painted it or anything since dicing it up

- I still need to fill in the upper corners and fab a way to attach it solidly.

- Car is CRAZY dirty due to Winter Mode :P

- System will be used for GPS/Music/Movies etc. Obviously not all while operating the car hehe.

GPS will come from the BU353 I got for Christmas from the GF!


Also, this has been done with NO modification to the dash. It is fully reversable. :D

this is definately a cool project. great work for trying something new.

I put a screen in my pro5 in that same position, but i don\'t have GPS or a carputer... can\'t wait to see this finished up.

im doing the reverse thing as you, my deck will go where your screen is, and my screen will go above the hvac controls!!!

altho no carputer or gps as of yet...tho i may retro in a gps, who knows

none the less, as posted in my other thread, u should get ahold of me on msn...to discuss stuff...

awesome dude. Where are you gonna put the computer? What comp are you running?

I want to install a carputer as well but a screen just doesn\'t integrate well with our dash. It\'s alright down there but a little cramped for my taste. Want it up top but also want it discrete. Damn why does the OEM Nav dash kit have to be so expensive.

The computer will be going in the glove box. That is the entire computer in the pic :) Its something like 5.75\" x 5.75\" x 1.81\".... TINY. It runs a 1.2GHz Intel Chip with 128MB RAM (Will be upgraded to 256 Soon), DVD-ROM drive, 20GB HDD (Will also use a 60GB external via USB), etc etc.

Lookin sharp even unfinished! I too am interested in a set-up like the one you\'re doing but don\'t want to mess around with the car too much - I\'d want everything to be completely reversible...and cheap! :D

My GF bought me the GPS receiver (not pictured). The PC I picked up used along with the screen from the FS section on mp3car.com .

Devin, thanks bro! I am looking into using Road Runner as well :). Searching around and playing with Red Skins, so I have something to match the red in the car lol.

That thing is awsome i want one but a couple of questions first:
1)Where did u get the carputer from?
2)what software are you using?
3)Whats size screen is that?
4)were you able to hook up the carputer so that you can use the car speakers for the dvd movies and music on the harddrive?
5)Where did u get the mount for the monitor?

Sorry bout all the questions just i am extremely interested because i think this is better then a dvd navi deck

You can pick them up online. mp3car is a GREAT resource. I picked mine up used on their FS forum. take a loos into the travla C134. It takes a M1000 MB, and I happen to have a brand new C134 case/PSU at home for sale if someone wanted :)

2)what software are you using?
It will run WindowsXP. You can also use a custom \"Frontend\". Basically a GUI to run the common CarPC based stuff. Thats what Devin\'s pic is of. That Frontend is called Road Runner. Again Mp3car.com has tons of info

Its a 7\" Xenarc Touchscreen

I have not hooked this up... but yes you can. It is very easy to hook up to an amp. In my case i have the PIE interface which allows anything with a headphone jack to play outta the speakers. So I will just plug in to the headphone jack

Its not a mount. It is the screen bezel. I cut down the courners, and mounted everything minus the back casing :) I am in the process of filling in the corner a bit for a more OEM flush

I think its a WAY better solution to OEM and external GPS units. No offence to those that have them, but I mean you have GPS, Music, Navi (and a TON of other stuff should you want to spend more...) all for under $1000. No worries about the questions... This is all new to me, and I am learning as I go along!

Now am looking for a screen and gps receiver

I figure that i am going to take out the aftermarket radio i have in right now and make a custom bracket so it will fit at the bottom underneath the cigaret lighter and airbag light. Then i will custon cut the bracket at the top for the moniter and have it their above the heating and airconditiong controls.

That all depends on you depending on what computer you want (IE how fast and graphics etcetc) if you buy new or used and where you buy it from I baught my entire off of ebay and i am comming up to a grand total of roughly 1000 CDN But now i have to customize all the parts to get everything to work the way i want it to.

exact same setup im going for....
a buddy of mine has that done here in town also...
u *can* fit an 8 inch screen, but it would have to be the screen and only the screen alone...meaning dissasembling it from its casing...otherwise you will loose the nice top curve of the dash kit that matches the rest of teh dash...
the metra turbokit, fits a 7inch just nicely....i show you what i mean...

some new pics of what my car pc monitor looks like. THIS IS VERY ROUGH WORK i am getting to the detailing part soon and waiting for glue to dry so i can sand and smoothe everything out. As yo can see i cut the aftermarkte stereo install bracket. I put 2 side walls of plexiglass on each side(I cut the area to wide) There for yo will see the strips of plexi glass cut. Currently am gluing those together. When that is done i will post some pics of work in progress. But for now
