Have to have color?
I got a 4 in 1 printer from Brothers. Laser printer, scan, fax, photocopier. But one down side is its not color. But its fast. Used for a week and now its in the box cause no one uses it.

all in 1 is like an all season tire.. usually shitty in all areas ;)

you can always get a brother printer for about 100-200 on sales at tigerdirect and other places.. downside.. toner/drum will cost a ridiculous amount (more than the printer itself)

i have the HL-1230 and it\'s been serving me well for over 2 years i believe.. in the past few months it started to coat my pages in toner thus making them look gray not white.. so it\'s time to replace but since i don\'t need it for anything PROFESSIONAL it\'s good enough.. (still on stock toner/drum - i guess nearing the end of its lifecycle)

do you need it to be more \'pro\'? do you have any PPM requirements? colour? duplex? oversized paper? mine is 12PPM or 17PPM (i forget now) B&W, MANUAL duplex (basically no duplex lol) and will do legal papers and that\'s it.. oh it\'s parallel as well.. i bet they don\'t even carry it anymore

anyway.. look fro brother and samsung as they seem very similar on specs and prices..

less than $100.. second printer here (http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=244&) .. it\'s cheap and it\'s \'popular\' (probably b/c it\'s cheap) :D

Wow...brothers stuff are pretty expensive...refurbished items still cost a fortune....But they are pretty reliable i guess.

HP = pro/corporate world.. definite stability and workhorses BUT you pay a premium.. and for home (even low volume office use) lower end suffices.. and it\'s cheaper.. and when the toner goes you buy a new printer.. same cost ;)

Get the Konica PagePro 1350 (that\'s the one I got; not sure if that\'s the current model).

Regular price is $200, but it goes on sale often for like $99.

In my mind, there\'s no need to spend $400 on a high end laser. In a couple of years, they\'re all obsolete anyways.

$99! You can\'t go wrong. Print out a few copies of your thesis and then throw it out with ur mamma\'s rubbas.

Being that I have been in the copier/printer business for a few years, I would recommend HP or Canon as your best bet.

At my workplace, we have gone thru alot of laser printers. Mainly the Samsung and Brother desktop models, and we subject them to alot of abuses. The Brother models seem to croak first all the time, the Samsung models are lightly used so I can\'t say about the reliability.

We\'ve had a HP model for about a year and my impressions are that its really compact and robust. Really designed well, and hold up to abuse. I would recommend the HP over Samsung and Brother, they know a thing or two about laser printers.

I have this guy,

HP LaserJet 1012 (http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/ca/en/un/WF05a/18972-236251-236263-14638-236263-377934.html)

First page printed in like 8 seconds... very fast and reliable. Does manual duplex (like most) and i think i was able to pick it up for like 150$. Awsome detail 2500 pages @ 5% 5000 page montly duty cycle. And very compact. Its a discontinued model that is still available some places. Theres a new model like 1020 i think it is that took its place but its not as good. If you can find this one (1012) its a recommended buy.

Paul.

Edit..

This one is pretty great too, used it in many office applications. On sale you can probably get it for a good price less than 400 prob.

The same here - HP LaserJet 1012
I\'ve had it for over a year and it\'s been great.
I must warn you - do not buy HP Laserjet 1020 !!!
It\'s a rip-off of 1012 and is lacking a lot of features (basically, it\'s a host-based printer and only works with Windows)
Btw, you can always refill an empty toner cartrige in many places around TO :p

HP is the only brand I will buy, I had several printers (inkjet though), none has ever failed. my friends have Epsons, all of them have problem.

I had a laser before (HP LaserJet 1100), but bought an inkjet (DeskJet 5650) because I needed colour. It has been serving me well for the past 2.5 years, and I prefer it somewhat over my laser.

I think inkjets have developed to a point where the text quality is on par with lasers, and image quality exceeds them. Unless you do a lot of high-volume printing to be able to take advantage of the lower price-per-page and speed of a laser, an inkjet works great, IMO.

For draft printing my inkjet is actually faster than my laser.

just copped this printer (http://configure.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=ca&CS=CADHS1&l=en&oc=OC1110_ADVENT)

came out to $114 SHIPPED with a cross cut shredder.. meh.. it\'ll be replaced in a year or 2 just like the old one and since i don\'t print TOO much at home, 1000pages the toner is rated for should suffice (that was the only caveat in purchasing this printer sicne my HL-1230 was rated at 3000 pages, but school is over and i print most of my stuff at work anyway) :D

I\'ve had great success with HP inkjet printers both at home and at work.....the quality is comparable to that of some laser printers with full colour capabilities, all for a reasonable price ;)

Konica Minolta PagePro Laser Printer (1400W) 69.99$ (no mail-in)

http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0665000FS10075599&catid=1023 3&logon=&langid=EN

Buy that, i have had the 1350W for about 3 yrs now( http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10 048628&catid= no I did not shell out 190$ for it, more like 90-100, it was a mail-in type of thing), solid printer. The 1400W seems like the same thing for 69.99$ with an instant rebate. They are rated for 1500 at 5%, I got about 1800+ out of mine during college, no issues. When it ran out I contacted their HO and got them to reduce the price on their 3000 page cart because I wasnt satisfied blha blah blah and got a bit over cost, really happy.

$80.48 TAX IN /1800 pages

Thats 4.5 cents per page (rough) operating cost, which is not bad at all and you can\'t go wrong.
Trust me the pages are dark and crisp just as our 5000 series HP\'s at work.

IF <- and thats a big if :P ... you are small minded and want a BIG BRAND NAME at least in NA... KONICA MINOLTA is a top player for sure, just not in the household consumer type of way (maybe cameras)... you can get the:

HP LaserJet Printer (1018) for 89.99$ (We did have some \"smaller\" HP models for workers that req them around the 150-200 price range if they really coulnt walk 20 feet to a printer, and they did not work out so well, but hey if you really preffer it even though the Minolta seems better in everything except for the looks dept (at least the 1400w ...teh 1350w i have looks a bit better) go ahead. The Minolta I have takes less than 10secs to start printing and when it does it flies (memory helps- 8mb...which the HP lacks at 2mb)

HP LaserJet Printer (1018): 89.99$ with instant rebate (no mail-in)
http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0665000FS10076848&catid=1023 3&logon=&langid=EN

***Best part of these deals is that there are no mail-in rebates involved!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

COMPARISON
http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/compare/compare.asp?comPage=prodlist&cat=&comparecat=10233 &page=0&sort=3&sku_id=0665000FS10076848&atab=3&cat id=10233&logon=&langid=EN

...and if you wanna try both, why not...for the prices that I have seen for reccommendations you could get both and test em out, if you like em both give the HP to POP\'s and have him shell out the toner/drum replacement costs and you keep the Minolta

...and no this did not take a lot out of my day...pretty much type as fast as when talking...thats y there are so many run-ons...so back offf, just trying to help the guy out :P
