So I was bored while studying for my exam on monday and decided to go ahead with a little project. I took my stock rims and sanded them down...with course, medium and fine sandpaper, then wet sanded them even more and then started applying the paint...so far so good...no bubbles and I\'m on my second coat. Should look nice one the ride.

got two rims half done...going to add two more coats throughout the day...

here are some pics.

Nice DYI - your coats look very smooth.

Question - what paint are you using? I\'ve wondered about something to do with my rims (not much $$$ to spend on new rims :( so trying to find a compromise) such as painting them.

Thank you,

JK

I\'m using the Duplicolor gold, found at any Canadian Tire and the Duplicolor High Performance Wheel Coating...so far so good...pretty cheap too...well at least to buying gold rims...:P

Looking good. Better than the repair job I recently had done on mine. hmmmm like someone else mentioned get a how to up.

Are you going to clear coat them? Do you know if there is a special clear coat used on rims?

I didn\'t take many pics of the DIY process (I was actually supposed to be studying for and exam), but I can do a write up with instructions and then the pics of the final product. Pretty simple process really.

Wow, what patience to actually do it.

Coarse sanding, fine sanding and then wet sanding. Damn, that\'s a lot of work. The results speaks for itself.

Looking good. Did you paint the valve steam and caps? I can\'t tell from your pics.

I did this to my rims for my civic and my wife\'s integra (gun metal). If you take you time and build up the paint in fine coats and then do the same with the clear it will look perfect. The problem most people have with spray paint is they hold the can too close to the surface they are painting and they try to do it in one or two coats. You should also start spraying 4-6\" before and end 4-6\" after the surface you are painting as the paint will clog the nossel and may need to be cleared out. Never start spraying on the surface, this along with holding the can too close is what causes the drips.

yeah I was too lazy to cover them up with tape....but I have turpentine and a rag that will take care of that problem.

I was going to suggest that, looks like you are thinking ahead. I can\'t wait to see pics of them on your car.
