NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) -- The talking car K.I.T.T. is heading to the big screen in an adaptation of the hit 1980s TV series \"Knight Rider.\"
Series creator Glen A. Larson will write and executive produce the Weinstein Co. project, which he anticipates will begin production next year. The project had previously been in development at Sony-based Revolution Studios.
Larson has bandied about the project for years. \"A number of people wanted to do a pure comedic send-up of it, but I always felt that would throw away the franchise,\" he said. \"There was always some humor on the show, but this film will probably have more gallows, foxhole humor.
Despite the darker tone, he said he would aim for a PG-13 rating because he doesn\'t want to exclude the series\' core audience. The show ran on NBC from 1982-86.
The story centers on the tale of a police investigator shot in the line of duty who is nursed back to health by a mysterious millionaire. He\'s given a new name (Michael Knight), a new face and a new car to help him continue his work. As in the pilot, he also seeks revenge on the criminals who left him for dead.
Larson wouldn\'t say whether David Hasselhoff, who starred in the series, would appear in a cameo or if William Daniels would reprise his role as the voice of K.I.T.T.
Other Larson TV series being developed as film adaptations include \"Magnum, P.I.\" at Imagine Entertainment and \"The Fall Guy\" at Warner Bros. Pictures.

OMG this is shameful. KITT is a freaking Mustang for the TV version of the movie. Well at least there is still hope as there will be another completely different Knight Rider feature film with a different car. Here's the new TV KITT (kill me now).

When Knight Rider first came out on TV, the car was a concept futuristic-ish car. GM later released the toned-down production version. The Shelby Mustang is a freaking retro car and has no business being KITT. It's blasphemy.

Pontiac doesn't have any cars right now that would fit the bill. I'd have rather seen the C6 than a Mustang as the new KITT though. But hey, it worked for Transformers using the Camaro Concept instead of a Beetle. FWIW, I've always loved the Shelby GT Mustang, even though it's a Ford, it looks badass and drives like a bat out of hell.

Maybe this time they won't give KITT such a gay voice.

I know, I was a big fan of the series. The old KITT looked like a Trans-AM or Thunderbird. Hell I still have the car toy and Michael Knight figurine from Consumers Distributing back when I was a kid.
But that was 20 years ago. The stang is hot. Didn't they have a stang in Transformers (Barricade) in a GM sponsored movie?

Yeah it was actually nice to see something other than a GM car in Transformers.
That stang looks photoshopped to me, I hope it not the new KITT.
I'm suprised GM doesn't lend the Firebird concept they released. Its based on the new camero. It would help sales a ton so i don't know why they'd do it.
The stang just doesn't work.

Don't worry, there is a separate feature film still in the works that is a completely different direction since someone else owns the film rights.

The autoblog article stipulates the only thing "photoshopped" was the red light which wasn't working at the time for the photo. But infact that the GT500KR is the car that's going to happen.
I won't believe it until I see it.

Well I just finished watching the pilot-TV-movie. I had very low expectations. I have to admit, that it wasn't THAT bad. Although, it isn't the greatest show on TV or anything.
Although I got past the fact that it's a Mustang, there were a few things that bugged me about the new KITT:
1. The seats with no headrests. I mean with a car that drives as crazy as KITT, you would think there would be some whiplash protection.
2. The "morphing" into super-pursuit mode. Looks too CGI-cheesy. The original KITT looked better when he changed.
3. The 2nd spoiler on top of the 1st. What the hell were they thinking?
4. What - no Turbo Boost??
That said, there were a few cool things about the car. I love that in manual-driving mode, it actually is a manual. The pop-up shifter and drop-down clutch were pretty cool.

Didn't mind the pilot, of course it was cheesey,
The 2 things I couldn't get past:
1) that stupid ford commercial every 8 mins... damn!
2) No skids marks from the suv before it plows into kitt.. come on, I don't expect complete realism, but any monkey could have done it better.

It was an ok "movie." Nothing spectacular or noteworthy aside from the car.
I couldn't stand how the two hours were mostly filled with long commercial breaks. Guess they only had about 88 minutes of footage.
But the Mustang had a badass exterior. I think it rivals Barricade from Transformers for the badass title.

Only saw the first 30mins of this movie. But I wish they would be realistic, How does a Ford Edge keep up with a GT500KR???

The movie was about an hour long if you cut out the million commercials that came on every 5 mins. That was annoying.

It was like watching an extended ad for Ford Motor Co. Fords, Volvos, Mazdas, although they did throw in the odd Toyota but overall a poor movie with some really bad acting, and cheesy storyline, The Mustang looks good, not sure if it is the perfect replacement for the original car though!

Some thoughts after watching the pilot...
Pursuit mode... Yes totally agree.. CGI shouldn't have been used, or at least a more detailed look of how it turned to that mode.
Morphing was pretty cool, The TA Kitt did not morph to a different car to conceal its identity. Thats a bonus.
Product placement... Is this the in thing for movies now?
And yes... Nice way for the HOFF to pass the torch to the new Michael.
Looking forward to the series...
Did anyone notice The "Montecito" casino and resort scenes from LAS Vegas... That was a nice filler.
Stupid Idea was eliminating the cargo truck for a cargo plane...
Another thing was the original Kitt had auto pilot to non auto pilot.. The manual mode for the New KITT to me throws off the original Knight rider theme to me.
7/10

LOL yah I noticed that as well.... Nice scene too..
Oh yah and the sensor is CGI.... Blah... I liked the actual LED they used for TA KITT.
CGI just doesn't cut it.

I caught that man. What's up with that? I was a bit disappointed with the whole movie. List is mentioned earlier, a very long Ford commercial, and all the other commercials every 5 to 10 mintues, were really annoying.
The car did look good though.
If only I could have my M3 equiped with some of that artificial intelligence.....hmmmmmm! lol

Every Ford owner must have loved it, but i must admit the TA KITT was pretty spectacular indeed. I wasn't overly impressed with the acting, but it was "OK" i guess. Those long narrow road scenes with just KITT on the road were pretty awesome (especially in HD) :)
I never really watched the original with HOFF too much, but i still agree the CGI kinda ruined it.
I will give a generous 8/10 as i dont watch much tv and couldnt hate it.

I honestly thought it was terrible. :(
It really was a big ad for Ford, and the series of commercials just made it that more obvious. As mentioned above... how the hell could the Edge keep up with a supercharged mustang? That was just stupid!
The sound of the blower on KITT was cool though. :bana
They should have at least had the FBI give the blonde chick a good long passionate kiss before leaving. Otherwise, that whole scene was pretty pointless.
And let's face it... when Mike could go home to two hotties in his bed... no way was he gonna stick around with that Stanford chick. :chuckle

Don't deny it Biz!! If it was a mazda commercial you wouldn't be saying that LOL!!
1. The seats with no headrests.
Noticed that too, its cool. But they actually do it so that the camera's can see the interior and actors better. I think I saw an extra features on a DVD like Gone in 60 Seconds that said that's why they encourage the old style seats when they can.
2. The "morphing" into super-pursuit mode. Looks too CGI-cheesy. The original KITT looked better when he changed.
Definitly the part I wasn't a fan of. Its neat and all, and its plausable the way they described it. They just tied it in very poorly. Essentially the new KITT has the molecular structure that the chick was talking about in class at the beginning.
You would think that with how awesomely cool transformers was, they would have came up with a really cool transformation, not some silly molecular morphing :loco
3. The 2nd spoiler on top of the 1st. What the hell were they thinking?
More downforce? Still Uber Gay! :bang
4. What - no Turbo Boost??
:complain Exactly, although it was still fast, I liked the shot with the air flowing around the car. Cool.
Didn't mind the pilot, of course it was cheesey,
The 2 things I couldn't get past:
1) that stupid ford commercial every 8 mins... damn!
hehe, just dl'd it. No problem there :chuckle
2) No skids marks from the suv before it plows into kitt.. come on, I don't expect complete realism, but any monkey could have done it better.
Didn't notice that. Good eye! But you have to admit, the way it plowed into KITT was cool, they must have built a mini black brick wall or something :pop
Only saw the first 30mins of this movie. But I wish they would be realistic, How does a Ford Edge keep up with a GT500KR???
The only way I put my head around it was that KITT didn't want to endanger the pursuers because it wasn't logical.
The movie was about an hour long if you cut out the million commercials that came on every 5 mins. That was annoying.
Without commercails it was 1h18m

+1 RJ3, same feelings all around pretty much.
So is the FBI agent a Les since she had the blonde in the bed? Did anyone catch that?
To bad the cop is butt ugly! The blonde was a smokeshow...
I hope to see more politicly correct lesbian action :chuckle

Yea, but Transformers was an ad for GM. The series won't be as bad I hope.
After the edge, focus and stang. There were more non-Ford cars after the first 15 minutes which was slightly more bearable.
The sound of the blower on KITT was cool though. :bana
Agreed, was it a supercharger? I heard the belt whine no? Either way it sounded mean. Loved it. :hawt
And let's face it... when Mike could go home to two hotties in his bed... no way was he gonna stick around with that Stanford chick. :chuckle
Yea, totally. They set his character up perfectly.
Conclusions
So I've finally watched it and posted in this thread (hence all the quoting). To be honest, at first it was pure cheese, but something kept me watching. I got over the cheesyness because I understand that they're trying to mimick the original and tie together a loose storyline, which in the end made up for itself. There was a lot off stuff you had to get over and process the ties together yourself, a lot of loose ends to pick up on your own which I wasn't a fan of. But once you get over the fact that is a pilot and they had to pick up the loose ends, it was actually pretty good.
I'm a big fan of the car, they did it tastefully (minus the wierd new morphing) and I especially like the new KITT 'brain' or interface. Awesome AI character. The characters seems to work ok, although the girls aren't the hottest but the daughter has potential.
I'm looking forward to the series. A new show to add to my line up, replacing Prison Break and the oh so forgotten Lost.

Okay so just watched the movie.... honestly.. I think it did justice to the original. Maybe some of you forgot just how cheesy Hasselhoff's acting was.. the only drawback to me.. was Val Kilmer as KITT. He sounds to serious and I keep thinkin Batman hahahaha.
The car is sick, while its not a Firebird Formula its still pretty cool but the rims need to be black like the old hubbies. Also the morphing thing is pretty cool back in the 80's it was the turbo boost as far as being realistic... hellloooooo its Knight Rider who the hell cares about realistic! I think it was good I'd give it 8/10 cuz that car is sick...!~!
Whoever mentioned the supercharger you're right in the beginning when the intruders find KITT there is a motor sitting there with a monster super charger.
Also for those who were talking about the plane.. it makes sense since the FBI agent mentioned that they lost contact with their agents just outside Prague, so they'd have to fly their in order to get KITT there.
