Open the trunk with your key and there is a little yellow tab on the mechanism latch, make sure it is slid down, when it is pushed up the trunk release will not work.
That was it - had no idea! Thanx!!!:)

You guys and your interior trunk release. You have no idea what your missing out on by getting out of the car walking to the back and pushing on the release.

How about this one? Mine (a 2006 Mazda 3 Sport) doen\'t even have a remote trunk release!!! If you\'re sitting in your car and want to open the trunk for someone on the outside, YOU CAN\'T. Talk about brilliant engineering.

Won\'t it be easier to ask the person on the outside to \"pop\" the trunk themselves? I\'d still like a trunk release though.

You need the key to pop the trunk. :(

If you have a 3 Sport, you don\'t need the key. As long as the doors are ALL unlocked, someone outside can release it via the handle on the hatch.
You only need a key for the trunk version.

even if the hatch had a trunk release it wouldn\'t really do anything.. you\'d still have to use your hand to lift the trunk open.. the 5th door/trunk is almost vertical.. the trunk wouldn\'t have enough force to open..
also, since you have a hatch you know that you can just open the trunk by unlocking all the doors.. thus, a trunk release isn\'t really all that useful since you\'d still have to use your hand to open the trunk anyways and since your hand is on the trunk you can just use it to hit the door handle..

Don\'t know of any hatch or 5 door vehicles with a trunk release in the car.
Hence the term trunk release.:sarc

No, you don't need the key. I put this question to my Mazda dealer since I, too, was wondering why there was no trunk release on the Mazda 3 Sport. The answer: Just click the Unlock button on the door. This will unlock the trunk, although it will not release the lid. That will have to be done by the person outside.

either what everyone else has mentioned with the little yello tab or it could be that your cable snapped running from front to back somewhere in which case you should get it checked out by the dealer for warranty
