OK so when I start my 04 I get this wierd sounds like metal rubbing on something. It sounds like its something outside the engine, but its still at the front of the car. It stops as soon as the car is cranked

Also, when the car is cold I here a slight metalic sound which goes away when the car is warm. It gets louder and faster with rising rpm so I think its a pully problem.

If anyone has had any sounds like this let me know...

I\'m visiting the dealer tomorrow (I\'m with 45 day free used fix policy (I\'m giving it a shot)) I\'ll keep you all posted on what it is and if its fixable.

Hey, great idea Adam, I\'ll check that right away!!!

I went to my dealer and they said its the regular sound of the starter. Ok then. As for the other squeeking when cold, its most likely the belt, since it has no tensioner. So both things are no biggy, and go away when the cars warm.

All autos have a more metallic grinding sound when starting up, dont ask me why, but i have noticed it when i get loaners from the dealership...always can tell if a car is std or auto just from listening to it start :p

My mechanic said that the sound came from all Automatic Mazda\'s also. Not just the 3. So I guess its just something I\'ll have to get used to. If you guys don\'t have the sound, lucky you!!!

My gf\'s auto also makes a short metal on metal sound just after starting. Dealer said this was normal...maybe they should have said not uncommon.

My 5spd MT doesn\'t make any metalic sound when starting.
But whenever I\'m at our meets and hear someone start-up their car, I do occasionally hear the metalic sound.

I know alot of people are afraid of looking under the hood and checking a few things out.
Check to see if it\'s a the heat shield for sure.
I wouldn\'t know about the automatic having more sound than the 5m. I haven\'t heard anything from my bro about it so I assume it\'s alright.
What I always do is check the cars oil. I\'ve noticed the car is use to consuming a bit of oil. After 4000-4500km\'s I always find the dipstick about halfway. I have the 2.0lt version and I never got the oppertunity to check the 2.3lt version when I had it.
So if you\'re hearing a bit of metalic sound only at startup, you should check the oil...

Finding 5w20 is also a PITA! As far as I can tell they only sell it in the 1lt bottle versions... which gets really annoying if you know the car is going to consume that much oil all the time.

I\'ve had absolutely no oil consumption issues. Maybe it\'s because my car is new (8200KM) althought he car was changed to mobil 1 at 3000km so that makes only 5000km being the longest interval since an dipstick check (before oil changed at 7999KM)

For the record I\'m using Mobil 1 0W-20 (as 5W-20 isn\'t available)
