I\'d figure I may as well start this since i\'m still in my newbie stage of using my DSLR.

Almost 1900 shots on my Rebel XT, I\'d say about 100 good shots and of them maybe 5 great shots.

here\'s one of my favorites:

wow! great shots everyone. But back to topic, how many shots during those photoshoots/vacations to get number of good shots and number of great shots?

Like i said above, of about 1900 shots with my Rebel XT, ~100 good shots and 5-6 great shots.

My belief has always been that you gotta take lots of shots to end up with a small hand full of good ones. You can’t expect each shot to be “picture frame worthy”. I’m sure that this is true even with the pros (although they probably do have a higher ratio of good shots vs total shots than the armatures/hobbyists).
This is partly why I wanted a DSLR (from my 35mm SLR). Cuz I’ll be freer to take more shots without worrying about film and development costs (although I still have to keep in mind the shutter lifecycle).

I agree with John, as you hone your skills as a photographer, your ratio of good shots to bad shots improves. But a lot of really memorable photos can just be attributed to luck, being at the right place at the right time. That\'s why when you go on vacation, bring a camera with you, even your small P&S digital camera...you don\'t, and sometimes can\'t, always have to bring your big DSLR everywhere you go.

Out of about 100 shots I may get 3-5 good shots if im lucky, maybe 1 great shot that is frameworthy. Like Blunt and John said one of the advantages of a DSLR is the freedom to just keep shotting.

Luck is a big factor, sometimes your not even looking to take a good shot and it comes out great. I took a pic of my GF just as we were walking and I wasn\'t even looking through the viewfinder and just snapped off a few and they turned out pretty good.

Being prepared is also a great factor... although I hated carrying a tripod, a big camera bag, and all these filters up and down the mountain, it did allow me the great shots. It was a pain, but worth it.

Lots of reading and talking to others about how they got there pics to turn out great is another thing. I\'ve just started using a Cir-Pol filter and it works wonders. I would have never have learned about it or how to use it if i didn\'t ask questions about someone elses work.

although i only have a point an shoot (Prosumer canon G2 camera) and now switched over to a SD550 - still feature rich but MUCH smaller, i\'ve taken over 10K pix with the G2 (15.5GB) and almost 1000 pictures (over 5GB) with the SD550 and there are only a handful of frame worthy ones.. although most of the time it\'s just events where i just kept snapping and snapping.. i\'ll post some over the weekend..

btw.. as a guide can we ensure the pix are 800pixels wide max (for those with smaller monitors)? thanks!

I work at a Lab, some of the things I noticed is that the pros will bracket and shoot multiple angles of the same subject, even different orientation ie. portrait or landsape to get the shot they want.

Im not 100% familiar with bracketing yet but cant the same aspect of bracketing be done with the adjustment of the Raw function in post production??

Like i said above, of about 1900 shots with my Rebel XT, ~100 good shots and 5-6 great shots.

Generally, if I take 100 shots - maybe 25-30 I\'m reasonably happy with. Of those, maybe 4 or 5 of those I\'m even going \"Wow\" - I\'m my toughest critic.

IMHO - what\'s worthy/really a great shot is all in context and highly subjective:

- Say you\'re at a b-day party for a friends kid - odds are most of your shots are going to be centered subjects (generally seen as a no-no if you\'re trying to go beyond point & shoot style photography - however this too is all in context).

- The pictures a parent takes of their child/children are all keepers - on the photog website I used to frequent, people would post shots of their kids and yes, some are nice, but I could care less (at this point in my life I don\'t have kids so I don\'t \'connect\' when I see shots like that). Conversely, people take pictures of their car :p and think their great, however others don\'t care.

The more you shoot, the more \'keepers\' you\'ll find you have - at least that\'s what I found. A thing I\'ve learnt is that in so much there\'s all these \'rules\' (rules of thirds/Golden rule/etc), I found that all these rules need to be broken to get a good picture you\'re happy with.

I\'ve rambled a bit here... so, back to more pictures:

(Here\'s an example of a photo that\'s not really print worthy in the sense of composition, yet I think it\'s interesting for what it shows - to me at least - read the sign)

Thanks! I used a Canon 350D with a Sigma 10-20mm for the shots. Minor post processing (levels, colour balance) was done in PS.

There\'s nothing wrong with post processing, used in moderation. Try not to use the filters though - they give pretty cliched effects.

Ah the lens helps explain alot about the excellent \"perspective\" shots. I find myself often limited with a 18-55 because it cant give enough of the overall view that we naturally see. In order to fit more in we need to back up and by doing so often get other things into the photo we dont desire..
or we cant back up more.
Still excellent shots though. How long have you been into photograpy?? Actually everyone.. what is everyones experience? Any actuall photographers on the board that do it for a living?

I got hooked during a B&W photo class I took in HS. It was amazing to be in the darkroom, learn about shutter, aperature... etc etc... Used a 25 yr old Nikon and Minolta for years... Loved them, and I still believe that they take some of the brightest, sharpest shots around.

Got my first camera when I was 8/9 years old - a 110 instamatic. Started using my dad\'s Pentax SLR in my teens throughout my twenties on and off - more or less depended as it was film how much cash I had to get pics processed. Got my first digital P&S camera in 1998/99. Picked up the Canon 300D DSLR in 2005.

What got me hooked - National Geograhic subscription, family photo albums, the techie end to it, artistic expression...

How slow were the cars moving? What kind of aperture and time settings did you have? What time of day is the best for those shots?

it depends.. there are two types of motion shots on my website.. one is a panning shot, and one is a rig shot..

panning shot i want the cars moving fast...
aperture i usually close down a bit to get a slower shutter speed (depends on time of day)

and for panning it doesn't really matter about the time of day.. but rig shots are best at sunset

how do you take a picture and have the main item clear, but the surrounding area out of focus? do I need a certain type of camera or lense? can I do it with a regular Canon digital camera?

Get yourself in another car and travel the same speed as the car that you want to photograph. Keep you camera's focus locked on the other car and use a somewhat slow shutter speed. Make sure the roads that you are using are smooth and you will some sort of support for the camera since you will be using a slow shutter speed. There are clamps available on the internet that mount/clamp the camera to the window glass. You can even use a Sticky Pod (http://www.stickypod.com).

the first tip only works for shots where the subject is driving straight.. but yes, my method is similar to your second tip.. just a tad farther out..

if you have manual features on your non-DSLR camera, open the aperture all the way (lowest f/stop) and zoom in all the way to your telephoto end.. if the object is small, you can turn on your macro mode..

if it's big, unfortunately the only thing you can do is open up the aperture and zoom in

I just splurged and finally bought myself a real camera, a Nikon D80 with a Nikkor 18-200mm VR lens. $1049 for the body and $889 for the Lens.

I'm off to the South of France and Barcelona/Madrid on Friday so I'll have lot's of practice for the next two weeks. I've only ever had a Digital P&S, so I've got lots to learn. Looking for tips on the care and feeding of this bad boy, last thing I want to do is screw it up.

I don't have a bundled kit. I just use an old air blower, lens cleaner, and one of those pen brushes. However I resist the urge to clean the camera/lens unless I absolutely have to. I think it's best to keep it clean from date of purchase. Stick on UV/Clear filter and never touch the glass.

Same here. I try to plan the purchase of lenses so that I can order a Hoya Pro1 UV filter through an eBay reseller in Hong Kong, for some reason, they are only a fraction of the price here. I even save about 50% on the price of a Pro1 CPL when I buy through them.

Definitely filters are waaay cheaper on Ebay (and/or in HK). The only thing I'm worried about is the authenticity of the item.

That's true, but I am quite certain that they are authentic. People from several of the photography forums have referred others (including myself) to them (Best Eastern) and they have all been very satisfied with not just the product, but their service. I messed up an order once, but after a few emails it was resolved without penalty.

The ebay store name is "Best Eastern?" I tried searching and found none (http://storenamesearch.ebay.com/search/search.dll?MfcISAPICommand=GetSNResult&fp=&ht=&query=best+eastern&rd=on).

pffft... digital. how about some "REAL" darkroom photography. most all of these pics were taken a couple years ago. just dont have the time now with school to spend hours in the darkroom. the cameeras used were penta l1000 with its stock 50mm and a sigma 28-135 that had to be the best lens for the money, and a stock setup canon rebel x and xs with stock poop lens.

most of the pics look sharper and more balanced on paper as they were scanned in with an older cheap scanner.

digital is peaking my interest now but with the price of a nice dslr its hard for me to get away from only being able to afford only a digi p&s.

hey, I got a photography question for you guys.. I have a Canon S5 IS and I can't seem to take night photos as clear as you guys.. it always comes out grainy.. is there a trick to taking amazing night photos?? or do you guys use photoshop to clear it up.. in which case, can you quickly tell me how to clear up the picture?? thanks!!

EDIT: and i also tried using a tripod.. still comes out grainy..

3GFX

Turn down your iso.

Play with the settings. With night shots don't use the flash, use a long exposure. Whip out the manual, see if you can set your aperture, iso and shot length.

ds2chan
11-21-2007, 11:14 AM
thanks.. I'll give it a try..

I know how to set the iso. the flash is not on when taking night shots.
I just have to check again how to change the aperture and shot length..
so the aperture and shot length should be set high then?? when I put the camera into manual mode the picture in the lcd screen always seems to be really really dark.. so it's not letting in enough light.. from what I've read I believe this is because the aperture is too low, correct?? thanks again..

3GFX
11-21-2007, 11:16 AM
The longer the exposure the more light will get into the shot, despite the image on the screen being dark. I like a large aperture, let in more light!

Neither really. The only sources of light are room ceiling light (compact fluorescent bulbs) & a flash (Canon 580 EX II).

But mind you that the desk does not always turn out white. I have to adjust the white balance to make it white as you see in final picture.

first off, great pics everyone!!!

I've been looking at dslr camers off and on for a little while now and am starting to look harder....I've been watching the best buy, futureshop and henry's adds for a while now as well as looked at the nikon and cannon flyers that just came out this week. I think I'm going to wait for boxing day sales to actually get mine but I still have no clue which way I'm going to go. nikon d40 or 80, cannon rebel xt, es 40d, lol but thats the joy in it i guess...doing the research trying them in the store and see what you like best. I've read just about if not all the camera threads on the forum here and I have a feeling I'll be asking questions at some point along the way. I've also thought that I would take the courses thats Hery's offers for there camers, so you can get to know them better etc. Look forward to seeing some witner pictures and hopefully taking my own soon :)

Hello everyone, well this seems to be the popular thread for asking questions showing pictures etc. I'm a noob when it comes to dslr camera's, I've been point and shoot for quite a few years now, had a kodak and when that failed on me I bought a sony dcsw1...I'm now ready to jump into the dslr world. I've been looking around alot and reading posts and such, I'm leading toward the nikon d80 right now I've held it and snaped a few pics nothing special...was in a hurry when did it so I'm planning to go to get a better feel of it tommorow as well as the cannon...My question right now is I see the "kits" that can come with the camera...get a 18-135mm lens or a 18-70mm lens. I guess my question is: should i get one of these lens in a package or should I buy the body only and then get a diff lense....I'm planning to be doing nature walks/ hiking and taking shots out there, probably large scenery of like rocks, mountins caves, etc, take pics at sunsets and sunrise when camping and other general picture taking as well as use it for vacations. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

"Package" deals are not only limited to "kit" lenses. Store will also package and provide deals for a body + upgraded lens.
How much do you want to invest? Lenses can get expensive.
If you are just starting, the kit lens may be fine to start. Once you get to know the camera and the lens you will have a better idea of what lens you may want to replace it with.

Well I'm not looking to break the bank. lol i'm guessing i'll probably end up spending around the $1300 mark, by the time i get the camera, lense or lenses depending on if i by it with a lense and get a second or i buy the body and then lenses....i'd also want goet a carry bag and look into how good those underwater casings are....sure would be neat to take underwater pics...but if there is a slight chance of leaki i ain't gonna risk it. What i had posted above with the camera comming with those lense, thats just what I've seen from the adds in the bb and fs adds and nikon website... Is there a lense maybe I should be aiming to get? or out of the two above or any other common ones that ppl get you could suggest?
I'm planning to take the henry's schooling for w/e camera I end up buying becasue they offer it all and there 25% off right now. lol

As seein you're 'new' to DSLR's - I'd suggest that you stick to the kit lens (as Xerox has stated) to start and get used to using the camera and basic functions of a DSLR first - I'm sure the last P&S you had allowed a lot of control, but the DSLR is another animal. This can help you determine what you're most interested in and where you can start dropping the $$$ on lenses. Is it macro photography, sports, still life, abstract, landscape, etc. Each of these styles has a lens range/type bit more 'geared' to it. Further, camera bodies come and go - lens generally tend to stick around (I'm getting the 40D in ... 48 hours or so :) but I'll still have my 5 lenses from my Rebel) It would kinda 'suck' to spend $600 on a macro lens to find out, you really don't like macro photography for instance. In the end it's up to you - I've spent the money on a lens and ended up selling them 3 months later cause I didn't use them enough.

Come to us after taking a healthy number of pictures (500+, maybe more) and tell us what you find yourself wanting to take more pictures of and get better ones of - then we can suggest a lens type.

Thanks very much for the reply. I think I will do that and just stick to a kit lense...and then come back after awhile and see what i want to venture more into. can i ask what you would suggest for kit. I had mentioned two above there that I have seen fs, bb, henry's and nikon site advertise there is like $100 difference between them but not sure which one is better to start off with.
I'm assuming that your buying your camera on boxing day?

The trick to taking good photographs as opposed to using software.

Compose your photograph the way you want it to look. I try and avoid using software as much as possible.
Think about what your subject is and figure out what the subject means to you and how you want to convey that meaning.

Best advice ever!

Learn the settings of the camera, cameras have more modes and adjustability than one may think!

I use Canon's DPP (Digital Photo Pro) to tune the RAW image.
Then I transfer it to Photoshop for more processing.
I never got the hang of Lightroom. I find Photoshop does most of what it can do and more.

I'm no where near Xerox's ability, but we use the exact same process.

If your camera shoots raw, take advantage, its so much better!

I've been using Photoshop mainly too, however now that I have Digital Photo Pro - I may try that out to see how it can 'help' in work flow for RAW processing. RAW images are great, however with the added step, it can at times be a bit laborious.

I've tried Lightroom and I really like the look of the interface, the abitlity to do the processing, however the main reason I gave it the trial, well a trial, was to organize my photos (database properties) and it's good, however I have another program for less than half the cost that does what organizing I need.

I like DPP because it gives you lighting graphs and options that can help turn a raw image into a nice clean image with better lighting with a quite a fast turn around, its basic features are what make it.

It goes for $560.00 at Henry's and it's a pretty good lens. Compared to the Canon 10-22 ($840 at Henry's) - great specs for what you pay.

When I got my first DSLR (Rebel 300D), I was a bit 'Canon Only', but I now have a couple Sigma lenses and they're not all that bad, and the fact that you pay less but still get pretty good results, I'm not so 'Canon Only' in regards to lenses now. Only thing so far, which is far from a big 'issue' (if you could even call it one) is, I find Sigma lens are a bit warmer than Canon (and I think I've stated this before in this thread, or in another...)
