Anyone know how safe it is to drive long distances on hwy on the doughnut?
I know it says don\'t go over 80 kmph, but I have a 40km hwy commute to work.
And right now don\'t have the money pick up a new set right now, this instant
so i have to sit on it for a few days while I shop around (http://torontomazda3.com/forum/read.php?TID=6890).
And how long can one use a spare for? how dangerous is it?
Thanks,
Ray

I would take side roads. My friend has a flat on his rex in Grand Bend (near London) and drove back on the HWY. Wouldn\'t recommend it though.. he was going about 90km/h-100km/h. I think the police would pull you over and make you exit if they saw you. Can\'t you get a lift from someone?

I wouldn\'t recommend it either... the spare is meant to use to get you to your final location... if it was a full size obviously it would be okay... but because it\'s that stupid little donut... you really should not be driving long distances on it if not necessary. It should say on the spare or perhaps in the user manual the actual recommended distances?
People will be POed as well if you are chugging along on the highway at 80 km/hr.
Don\'t you have snows you can use in the interim?

i\'ve driven 160km from welland to richmond hill on the donut, setting the cruise to 100km/h the whole way.
you will be fine.
put the donut on the rear...if it means moving a good rim/tire to the front, do it.
as for not having the money, use a credit card or line of credit to buy a cheap set of tires.

Great idea, thanks! I never thought of that. Damn, I didn\'t bring my jack & stands
when I moved. Is there a way I can do it with just the jack in the trunk alone?
I still don\'t trust goin on the highway. How far is it from Oakville to Pickering?
If I can get a hold of John (mdntfx) I\'m gonna try to get a set from him.
Thanks again Neil. (It\'s Neil right?)

I remember having an extended drive for a couple days on a spare in a past car.
Those things heat up pretty fast, so don\'t get alarmed if you start smelling burned rubber when you are stopped at a traffic light.

Oakville to Pickering, about 100km maybe more depending on actual start and finish of trip.

i drove with the donut few days ago from hamilton to mississauga, about 50km... i was doing constantly 80km... feels weird.. since whatever corner of the car that you had the donut on.. the whole car slanted that way.. it\'s 115/xx/13 tire anyways... \\
after i got home.. found out that the tire seems to wear quite a bit... but i didn\'t pay very close before the ride though..

You can go to some tire shops and pick up used RSAs . Thats what I did 2months ago when I ran over a nail. It costs abour 30-40 bucks. Tire may be worn out a bit but looks way better than the doughnut.

good tip! thanks,
Actually I picked up a set of General Extreme UHPs today from midnightfxgt.
Dirt cheap for a great tire.
No doughnut, no RS-A, no problem!
