I hope no ones car is on this boat!
The Singapore-flagged Cougar Ace -- owned by Tokyo-based Mitsui O.S.K. Lines -- was carrying 4,813 vehicles from Japan to Vancouver, British Columbia, said Greg Beuerman, a spokesman for the ship owner. There were no reports of any cars going overboard. Beuerman said typically vehicles are securely fastened.
Yowza! More details at:

Dealer inventory at best. I hope they aren\'t Mazda\'s - ohh the horror!
I can read the headlines: non rust proofed cars from the factory are no match for Pacific ocean sea salt. First waterlogged, now a heap of rusting scrap on the ocean floor. A tragedy of the highest order as 5,000 are lost at sea! The identities of the make and model are being withheld until the manufacturer is notified of the loss of inventory. The ship made a slurpy sound as it sunk beneath the waves at 7/11. A sailor who was recovered remarked about a blue vehicle entrusted in his care \"it didn\'t have much of a life at only 5 days old - I strapped her in myself, sniff sniff - now no one will ever apply those brakes or turn that wheel - sob sob saab\". \"We were so close, yet so far. How do these things happen? - I need a big mac with cheese!\" Film at 11.

Press release from Mazda:
July 27, 2006
Mazda Vehicles Aboard
Stricken Car-Carrying Vessel, Cougar Ace
On July 24, 2006, Mazda was advised that the Mitsui OSK Lines\' Cougar Ace had run into trouble off the Alaskan coast. Although it is reportedly still afloat, the vessel is on its side,
What caused this incident or the extent of the damage to the vehicles is currently unknown. Just over 4,700 Canadian- and U.S-bound Mazdas were on board. Approximately 60 percent of the cars are MAZDA3s and close to 30 percent are Mazda CX-7s. The vehicles were headed to the ports of Vancouver (Canada), Tacoma and Hueneme in the USA.
A plan for salvaging the vessel is being developed and will be executed by Mitsui OSK Lines as soon as possible.
Mazda will wait until the situation has been fully evaluated and understood, before disclosing further information.

looks like the entire ship was filled with mazdas.
i wonder if this will \'hurt\' the company ... would the shipping company pay for all those lost cars ?

Odds are it\'s insured (whether by Mazda or by the carrier company ???) - question is if the policy covers this and to what extent.
Companies like Llyods of London due stuff like this - I believe they\'ll insure anything if you got the money.
It would be interesting to know if the crew got the chance to start pushing cars off in an attempt to stablize the ship (sidenote - if you we\'re moving oversea\'s and you put all you belongings in a shipping container - something you have to keep in mind - should the ship run into trouble, they have the right to toss containers off to stabilize/save the ship - if yours is one of them - say goodbye - guess that\'s why you should look at insurance).

The memo from our (Mazda Canada) President.
Vessel - Cougar Ace
As you may be aware a vessel known as the Cougar Ace carrying Mazda vehicles for both Canada and United States is listing badly in the Pacific Ocean just south of Alaska. Fortunately, the crew has been removed safely with the only injury reported being a broken leg. At the moment it is unclear to the future condition of the Cougar Ace and the vehicles on it, but regardless your vehicle orders will be filled. We will provide further updates as the situation becomes known.
