Lately I'm noticing that its getting hard to put the car into 2nd gear; I cant really describe it but it "feels" like something is being "crunched" Its gears grinding but on a lesser scale and there is no sound it makes but its just a "feel"
What could this be? Its only the 2nd gear; would changing the tranny oil fix this?

Whats the mileage on your car? A tranny oil change would be a cheap and easy way to find out if it is.
Does it happen when you upshift or downshift? Or anytime you put it to 2nd? What about if the car is not running?
Just asking to shrink down the possiblity.

When the car is not on its fine - goes in and out very easily
Only when I am shifting from 1st > 2nd - no problems when downshifting but I dont downshift a lot either. (More 5th - 4th - 3rd etc)
The car is almost at 80k
When should someone change their tranny fluid?

Shouldn't it be time for tranny oil change? I remember i changed my tranny oil at 75k when i still had my Camry.

I guess
I'll look into
Is that a driveway job or do I have to have Mazda do it?

Not sure if you can do it on your own for a manual. But I know its easier if its an auto . And you can just do it at any shop just to save a few bucks. But remember just keep your reciept for a record for your warranty, if you still have it.

though I changed my trans oil @ 48K, but the oil should be fine for around 100K

For the e46 BMW, BMW declared that the automatic transmission fluid was a "lifetime" fluid. No change was necessary. Then lotsa failures of automatic trannies started surfacing (most past-warranty). Many were pissed and BMW appears to have backtracked and has recommended fluid replacement at regular intervals.
I would think that it would be very beneficial to change tranny fluid for both std. and tiptronic cars.
Do it regularly if you're keeping your car for an extended period of time...

It could be a driveway job if you have ramps, otherwise it would be pretty tough. As for changing the tranny fluid on a standard trans...there is no maintenance according to Mazda...its a "sealed unit".I changed mine recently anyways to synthetic which improved my shifting slightly. But what you describe sounds like worn syncros...hopefully not the case!

Did you feel a difference??
Did you do it at the dealership?

You can change your tranny oil in the driveway. I did. Took maybe half hour? It helps with a second person when filling it back up. You'll need 3 quarts.
You can feel a slight difference as stated above if you switch to synthetic.
My second gear "crunches" once in awhile when I shift into it, too.

I switched to RedLine MT-90 at 17,000km. I did notice a slight improvement. Much more noticable on hotter days or when the tranny oil is at proper operating temperature (it's actually very smooth).
I get the crunchy feeling sometimes too from 1st to 2nd on cold starts. I usually granny shift or especially in winter I double clutch to avoid the crunch.
Whether this is normal or not... ???

Im kinda glas I'm not the only one then :D
I had them check it out when I got my oil change done.
I have good rapport with the guys at the dealership so they basically recommended that I do a tranny oil change and go from there see if it improves.

Probably wont' improve by much. I have Redline MT-90 in there and it still does it every now and then.

Well does second still crunch? What gear oil did you put in? Like i mentioned earlier I switched to Redline gear oil and my shifting feel did improve...smoother now.Only time I have a problem has been lately with the colder temps, when I first start off in the morning its a little hard getting into any gear!? After a couple minutes its fine.

Are they going to replace your window trim under warranty? My door seal on my driver side door is coming off. I can't get it to stay. Let me know if they fix yours under warranty...

On my 3 I had a bird drop a bomb on my right-rear window. It was a big droopy bastid. So naturaly it went down from the top of the window to the middle of the door, mustave been a fat seagul. So I go to the coin-op not wanting to touch any of it. So I place it 2mm away from teh window trim and held it there for like a minute. Once I removed it, the water literally cut/rippleded the rubber. Went to the dealer, explained situation and it was replaced free of charge :) ....ahahah told the tech what happened so that he could put on rubber gloves :p Depending on your dealer and the relationship with the staff, it can always go 50/50 especially with supposed Wear/Tear items.

Ah crap (jk had to use it) dude that sucks. I am suprised it tore the window trim. Glad they replaced it for you. I would say I have a good relationship with erin mills mazda. They've always gone above and beyond for me.
Hey MK, I am interested to hear if your dealership helped you out too!

The window trim that is being replaced is in the rear window - the part that seperates the 'big' window from the smaller little part. And yes covered under warranty (well I showed them the problem when the car had like 79,800 km on it LOL ;D) Im still waiting for the part tho
