View Full Version : Moonroof Creak?

I've noticed that on our 2006 GT that when we close the moonroof it makes these creaking or settling noises for a few seconds after it's shut. Kind of sounds like it is settling into place though it's very minor.

BTW, this doesn't happen on our 2005 GT.

Anyone else experience this or have any input?

Mine does that too. If yours ever starts to leak because of it not setting right take it in! My service advisor at erin mills mazda gave me a fix for my sunroof! Some leak if they don't set right.

Hmmm, well mine hasn't leaked yet (knocks on wood), but I think I'll mention it to MofT next time it's in for service.

Yep you would qualify for the issue! It came up when I was talking to him about it leaking after going through a car wash once... Mine leaked too!

Mine squirted water from the middle back of the sunroof.

for the record, one time i actually felt the water hitting my face...no joke

Ha ha... yea I thought someone in the back seat spit on me... I was like WTF? Then we all had a laugh...

Yep erin mills mazda. Frank was the service advisor who informed me of the fix.

Strange, I haven't experienced any leaking, just the creak.

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum.

Just been reading some of your threads on moonroof creaking and leaking. After 6 months of driving my '07 GS, I've noticed a creaking sound when I tilt up my moonroof...as well as experienced slight "spitting" after going through a shell car wash. Needless to say, been worried about this problem and wanted to get more info from others about how (or if) this similar problem was fixed. "b" was saying there was a fix for this issue...what does it involve?

Been dealing with Scarboro Mazda with my first oil change (service wasn't bad)...anybody have any feedback about this dealer for warranty issues?

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Clean the area around the moonroof, the part of the chass where the moon roof sits. I took that issue to avante and they showed me where the problem was. That reminds me I need to clean it today. If you need pics let me know

Thanks for the suggestion...the leaking is what worries me the most. It started to leak in the car wash before the creaking problem came up. I'll try cleaning it to see if it helps at all. Could you provide pics for the area that needs to be cleaned? Also, another thing I noticed is that when my moonroof is fully closed, one corner of the moonroof sticks up more than the other side (ie. the corner is not flush with the roof of the car). Could that be part of the problem? I'm gonna need to bring the car to the dealer to have a look...just wanted to do a bit of research first before the dealer gives me they're "opinion".

my moonroof leaks a few drops during touchless car washes at gas stations.
but no nothing close to what your are experiencing. sounds like you need to visit the dealer! I'll take some pictures for you tonight man.

Thanks man! I'd appreciate that. As for the car wash leaking...it sounds similar to "b"s experience when it felt like someone was spitting from the back seat. Except I was alone in the car when that happened! Well, this is my first moonroof...it hasn't leaked in the rain, just only a bit of "spitting" going through the touchless car wash...wasn't sure if that was "normal" for a moonroof...but hopefully the dealer can do something about it.

update: a month ago my 06 has developed the creak as discussed.
any pictures showing solutions to mediate the problem would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the pics FUMAN,

So you've found that by just cleaning off the dirt along the sides of the moonroof opening, the creaking sound stops? Sounds simple enough...At this point I'll try anything!

Mine started leaking after only a month (don't have the creeking issue though). Was going through the Sunoco car wash at 407 and Dufferin and felt a bit of water coming through the roof. Guess the pressure on those things is pretty high.

Is it the dirt that contributes to the leaking or is that just the problem with the creeking?

If it's not the dirt, what the fix for the leaking problem?

I don't think the dust have anything to do with the leak.
If u've warranty just go through the dealer.

I dought the sunroofs are of the same design, but years ago with both of my Honda's, I had the same problem; a little bit of creaking and some slight leakage.Anyways I solved the problem by cleaning all around the sunroof, cleaning and adding rubber protectant to both of the rubber seals.-(For a tight seal) Also, there might be drainage "runs" which on the Honda's ran down the 'A'-pillars for any water to drain, these I would clean with an air gun.You guys should find out if the Mazda 3's have the same thing...I would think that they would, but I don't have a sunroof so I can't check.

I can't believe Mazda is sending out leaky sunroofs year after year. No water should leak through, no matter how high the pressure.

My Z24 sunroof had this Vaseline-type stuff spread along both sides of the rails. Is the Mazda sunroof covered in this stuff, too? Not sure if Vaseline is okay to use on rubber.

I believe thats just grease on your sliders or rails, or whatever there called, its not for the rubber.
