hi everyone,

just wanted to know if anyone has this problem:

started the car this morning and heard this clicking noise coming from the front. continued to drive the car and it kept going on for about 2 hrs, then mysteriously disappeared??!?!

can anyone tell me what this is and is it normal? its a 2006 mz3..with only 8,500 Km on it.

thanks in advance...i sure hope its normal...its my first mazda and i would hope that its more reliable than this especially being made in japan!

btw..is the engine shared with any ford products or is it unqiuely mazda?

Mine sounds like a night club. All kinds of funny noises. If I ever see you at a meet we can compare and see if yours is something you should be worried about. Other than that... take it to a dealership... they said mine is normal. I dunno.

I've had the same noise for 2 years now. I noticed that it happens when the car is wet after rain/snow or when its colder. In fact I heard it tonight when I started the car at the cottage...however there was no rain...just condensation on the car. I guess its normal.

Don't know about the clicking but, 'I believe' the engine is manufactured in Japan.

Does the clicking appear to be coming from behind the dashboard/centre stack? On cold and/or wet days I get a weird 'clicking' noise first thing in the morning but it usually only last two minutes tops.

i was finally able to replicate it, pls try this and post if you have the same issue:

turn car on, leave at idle..turn off radio and roll windows down to hear it.
now, leave you fan setting at 0 for a few seconds..you should not hear anything:
turn setting to 1, it should click and almost sounds lika a compressor is started (AC is not on)..leave for a few seconds and you should hear a click at regular intervals.

is this normal? can anyone who works at mazda that can look into it?? FLip speed?

thanks

You sure your switch is not set to one of the defrost settings? ...Air dosn't have to be on and the compressor will activate which does give a clicking sound in regular intervals!

its not on defrost setting. so is this clicking normal in all mazda 3's? if it is triggered by the ac/heater controls?

thanks for the help.

The A/C compressor can and likely will run even when set to the 'feet' position only as described in the owners manual.

Could be your blower fan making the noise. Better bring the car into the dealer.

i had that same problem with the clicking noise, went to MoT and the mechanic said its the A/C. check where you fan switch is pointing, cause some of them turn on the A/C, although the A/C light isn't on.

can you tell me where your is pointed? i will try it out tonight and see.
i am praying that it is the a/c and nothing else. although its kinda weird to have the clicking noise when the a/c is running.

its my first mazda and i hope it isnt plagued with problems.

i have an appointment with Westowne this Sat. (are they any good?)

Thanks again everyone for helping me diagnose the problem.

btw, can the admins have a sticky on recommended mazda dealerships for service?

i have mine on feet and face, no clicking noise with that.

if u point it on windshield and feet, or on windshield then u'll get a clicking noise (that is when i had the clicking).

I used to get a clicking noise just after I turn the engine but it doesn't happen anymore.
I checked after reading the thread thinking that I've gotten used to it, but it is definately not there anymore.

I just started reading this thread.

Mine clicks too when I start the car too. It doesn't concern me at all. Mine's only 4 months old.

I've got a *squeeky* belt or pulley when the engine is cold, once its warm it goes away.

I gotta say, that, plus squeeky breaks, plus that AT noise when I start up all add up to a car that you don't want to start up when the ladies are near by!! lmao.

Funny - I was just gonna post a similar question.

For me, the click starts as soon as you turn the fan setting to any of the defrost settings (as well as turning on the A/C at any setting....face only forexample).
When idling at a redlight, you can hear the clicks at regular intervals, and you can feel the car vibrating, with the vibrations corresponding to the timing of the clicks.

Sound like what you got?

What you are describing is the compressor switching on and off. That's absolutely normal on any car.

My '07 has a noise that sounds a lot like it might be the fan blower however seems only to happen on the right side of the selector dial (feet to defrost). Instantly the noise is gone if you switch the setting to dash.
