View Full Version : Rims stuck to hub?

So today my brother in law and I were swapping out the factory rims and tires for our winters and steelies. On both of our 3's, not one wheel came off easily. All eight were literally seized onto the hub. It took a lot of brute force to get them to 'pop' off. What should've taken us maybe an hour total took well over two.
Has anyone else had this problem?

Prof, you were gonna get majoogled if we still had our old site up. ;)
This is a very common problem with the 3 and I am sure with most other cars. Use some anti-seize you can pick up from CT or Parts Source (on sale now for $6.39 or something) and put some on. It will help on the next change over. :)

I have seen somewhere...can't remember where that if you dont want the mess you can put on a circlular pad with cutouts for the bolts (almost looks like fabricky bandaid material)...you just put it on and no mess
....lol can't really describe it, but its out there

If you put on the anti-seize correctly, there won't be a mess. You don't need to put a lot and you only need to put it where metal meets metal.
Yes I had this problem once too. I had a flat tire on the side of the road & it was raining and I was wearing a suit. I yanked and yanked on it... I tried as hard as I could without ruining my suit. I am sure I could have got it off if I was wearing jeans and got down on my knees and fought with it.
Instead I called mazda roadside assistance. He also couldn't get it off. So he grabbed a pc of 2x4 from his truck and smacked it off. He said this is normal. I checked the rim after... there was no damage.

The anti-seizing compound is okay just don't use much... but, you guys ever hear of a Rubber Mallet...a few good whacks with one of those and any wheel will come off....gauranteed!! :)

My wife's car's wheels were seized to the hub when I was changing them to winters this year. I had neglected to put anti-seize when we got the car. I tried kicking them and they wouldn't budge - no rubber mallet would have gotten them off. I had to loosen the lugs just a little bit, then lower the jack and use the weight of the car to pop them loose. For the rear wheels, I had to actually drive the car for a few meters before they would give. Not pretty, but it worked.

We tried this but it only worked for about three of the eight wheels.

I know, but I did search this site before hand just in case ;)
Thanks for the tip on the anti-seize, I'll pick some up in the next few days.

if they are seized on just means that the hubs rusted to the wheels. To get them off get a hammer and hit the tire they usually pop off like a charm then. We do this at bmw and at nissan there is no damage to the tire. Clean the hub off with some sand paper lube it up with grease or copper slip and throw the winter steelies on it. Then clean the summer wheels off and they should be good to go for next year.

Rubber mallet has always worked for me....even when I serviced large trucks, its in the technique that u use> loosen lugs half way>rotate tire 1/2 then 1/4 turns while walloping tire at 12 o'clock position.
