So, I'm looking to pick up some winter tires this season, and since I'm a tire n00b, I could use some help.

I've got a Mazda3 with stock 15" tires on it. I'm looking for snow tires that'll help make the trip from Toronto to Halifax safer this holiday season. My guess is that I need a tire that's good in the snow/ice/slush, and hard enough to get 2 or 3 winters out of them.

Any recommendations? Or, even, things I should be sure to avoid?

Thanks!

I would personally recommend any Nokian tire.

Another one to look at is the Kumho KW17/KW19 both are good on highways and snow/ice/slush.

the kw19 is a little squirmish on teh highway due to it being a real soft tire.....

+1 on the Nokian's,.....If safety is your no#1, over cost concern, I would recommend the Nokian Hakkapeliitta Rsi's there probably the best Winter/hwy tires out there....thier awesome!! You'll definitely need something like these for that drive.
