Hey,
Was wondering if anybody else is experiencing this. I have an '06 MTX, and ever since it's been cold and the car has been sitting outside, the transmission is acting up. When I first drive the car, the shift from 1st to 2nd is bad. The car stutters, like when you pop the clutch, but I'm not. I release it like I normally do, and the car "stutters". The problem goes away after I drive for a bit. Last night, something new happened. I was on the Gardiners and I couldn't shift into 5th gear. The gear just wouldn't engage. Finally, after 4-5 attempts, it finally went in, and there was no problems after that.

BTW the only thing that I've done to the transmission was to change the oil to Redline synthetic.

You used Redline MT-90 (75W-90) right?
I've got '05 MTX with Redline oil and I've driven approx. 30,000km with it. I've never experienced what you described.
The only thing is that I feel a "crunch" when shifting from 1st to 2nd in cold conditions - which I can avoid by double clutching or "granny" shifting.
Try doing that to see if it makes any difference.

Yeah, I changed it with MT-90.

A friend said maybe I was driving in first at a speed over 20, and I let go of the gas, and the engine would slow the car down, but I paid attention too that, and don't think it's that.

Is your car an '06 as well?

I have an 06 with manual and I haven't had this problem.

Could this be what you have?:

Thanks for the link, but it doesn't seem to be the problem. The car idles fine on startup. I don't know if "stutter" is the proper word. It's like if you are driving in first gear and you are going like 20km/h or more, and you let go of the gas, and the car slows down suddenly. But in this case, you let go of the gas, cars slows suddenly, then you gas, and repeat all really quickly. So you are jerking forward. It goes away when I'm driving, only jerks at the start in low speeds.

What you are describing there sounds pretty normal. You're talking about 1st gear only, right?

I have that 'crunch' too from 1st to 2nd... can you describe what double clutching is? LOL is it exactly what it sounds like

Double clutching in a nutshell:

1. Clutch in
2. Shift to Neutral
3. Clutch out
4. Clutch in
5. Shift to 2nd
6. Clutch out

This process allows the intermediate shaft to slow down to engine speed before shifting into 2nd. Helps out the synchro and you'll find it's easier to get it into 2nd when tranny is still cold. You can also double clutch to downshift (just need to rev match). Truckers need to double clutch because their clutch plates are massive and are not made to slip and their trannies do not utilize synchros.

Thanks for that!
Is that 'bad' for the car?

Thanks sbmonkey for explaining that. That's exactly it.

You're asking if it's 'bad' to double clutch? No, it's not bad. You're only helping out the synchros. Having synchros eliminate the need to double-clutch. It's just that the synchros needs some manual help sometimes :)

Yes thanks sb... I never really understood it.
