Thanks in advnace guys/gals!
my computer started to make a annoying long whine/beep about 1 week ago. The sound would go away once the power supply was turned off. I thought it was the m/b battery. Yesterday I picked up a battery and replaced it. This did not fix, my computer will now not turn on.
Any suggestions?

Can you power up with the cover off and tell where the sound is coming from?

when I try to power on, it doesnt turn on, but the annoying whine is there....it is coming from the area where the "power on/off" plugs into the m/b..there is a little green led light there..

Do any fans come on? Anything turning on/lighting up at all besides taht one LED when you try and power it up? Might have to take is somewhere for them to look at it. Sounding like it could be a number of things and you wont be able to check without trying and swap a few things out one at a time.

try a new PSU.. sounds like the whine is coming from a fan.. fan that is dusty.. either the PSU or the southbridge/northbridge .. they usually have small fans (40mm) and they are uber fast rotating but when they don't get lube and cleaning they just get stuck or very whiney..

MAJIC! I was waiting for your input...lol
I thought it might be the p/s.
Thanks!
Is it necessary to go with a p/s that is over 400 watts?

shit.. if the whine is there then the psu is probably working hard but mobo is sayin'.. eff u.. might have fried the mobo :(
remove EVERYTHING from the MB (ram/cpu/daughter cards/video/etc) noting where they go ;) then try to start the PC.. IF you get beeps then you're doing ok.. continuous beeps means no/bad memory and/or cpu.. so insert those 2 (after you power off of course) and try again.. if you get 3 short beeps and a long one, video card is missing.. plug that in.. and if you can see shit on teh screen you're almost in the clear..
but first check for all those dust bunnies.. ;)

I know. I wanted some opinions on the set up of the m/b & cpu.

no no.. i can't see YOUR shopping cart.. it's based on cookies.. per session.. mmm cookies.. anyway.. show me the links of the individual components..
budget + purpose?

What he's saying is that the cart can only be viewed by the person that added to it. When we click on that link we see it as being empty :)

Oh ok...budget is not that much of a factor. It is a home computer for general use.

and a 65W version of the 4200+ CPU .. idles at < 19C!!

I found that the constant whine is coming from the motherboard itself. How does one find out what the problem is? I have a Soyo KT600 Ultra M/B.

Follow Majics instructions in post #8. If it's actually coming from the MB, then you're probably screwed, probably a voltage regulator. If it's one of the periphs attached to the MB then you'd just have to replace that.

whine.. would NORMALLY come from mechanical parts (fans usually.. maybe the voltage regulators) ,.. if it's the latter ur fookt anyway.. if it's not dead now it will be soon :D did you take everything apart and check the fans on the south/north bridges?
is the comp up and running now or still just whining?
EDIT: ugh this site sux.. lol.. takes me forever to submit and edit posts.. and ugh!!! anyway.. you're probably looking at a new mobo/cpu/ram combo... am2 = DDR2 and your soyo is just DDR

Thanks guys.
The computer is just emiting a constant beep, no power what so ever. I guess I am fooked. I really don't want to buy a new m/b cpu, but oh well.
Question: I see power supplies from 350 watts and up. Is there a reason why someone would buy anything above 350 watts?
Edit: Different RAM for that motherboard! I gues I will have to look for another one that can support the DDR RAM. Thanks for pointing that out Majic!!

when people(such as myself) run multiple hard drives, and a powerfull cpu, require more power..

I get a emergency do-do-do sounds from the onboard speaker when I power up the computer. LOL.
It seems that my 6600GT video card is using a lot of power and I had to put in a 400 Watt PS when I first got the card. With some of the newer technology and components, you're going to need all the power you can get.

there are good power supplies and there are good power supplies..
a lot of people neglect the PSU and cheap out or don't even pay attention.. the BEST out there right now is the seasonic and corsair brands (they are actually made by the same manufacturer and rebranded or seasonic makes it for corsair.. anyway)
i have the S12 and i would love to get the M series next.. it's modular so that you can remove the wires you don't need.. you want to look for HIGH efficiency PSUs as well .. there are ones that are 80% efficient and up throughout entire load.. from low150W to max ~600W or so..
i have some antec PSUs that are older and they still do the job but seasonic and corsair are the shizzle to get now if you're upgrading.. go read some reviews ;)
