Has anyone noticed a funny smell that comes from the heating after 5 min of driving. However it does go away after 2 min or so.

Nope.

Can you describe the smell.

If the smell is outside of the vehicle, the culprit may be the catalytic converter. I believe it's normal and will go away with age.

I'll bet it's the cat too. Rotten egg smell = cat.

It doesn't always go away. Sometimes its a sign that your cat needs to be replaced.

would that be covered by warranty?

If the car is under warranty, then a bad cat would be covered.

This smell doesn't necessarily mean it's bad though. New ones sometimes do this as well. How long have you had the car and when did the smell start?

If the smell persists over a week, take it in. I only noticed the smell once over 3 years of ownership.

the smell will go away. My TL had that when it was new and i was wondering about it too. But after a few more months of driving it and now its gone.

Yeah, if the car is only 3 months old, I wouldn't worry about it. If the cat were bad, you'd get a CEL triggered from the 2nd O2 sensor.

Then I'de say that you chances of having a bad cat are higher. But as others have said - ride it out for a while. It may go away.

Maybe the first user didn't really push the car hard. Usually when i experience the smell is after i pushed the car hard and when i come to a stop or slower speed i'll smell it.

Good point. Some spirited driving should help clean it out.

And if it doesn't clear it out... at least you'll be keeping ahead of the smell... :)

might be the same issue joe/flipspeed had in this thread (http://torontomazda3.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=8887) .. take it in before the warranty expires and you could be looking at a new exhaust :) on the other hand, emission warranties for specified components are 8 years/128,000kms so you may have some time.

if that's not the case, you may have mold/bacteria growing in your HVAC system.
