Started the car this morning everything was fine, I let it warm up for about 5minutes as usuall and then made the drive to work. So I get to work, park the car in the mall parking lot and leave it there until now around 3pm (left it at 10am). I get back to the car to go to lunch and when I start the engine at first it starts at 1000rpm then jumps to 3000 and makes a sort of miniature explosion sound and then jumps back down to 1000rpm. What the hell?? I opened the engine bay looked around nothing really seemed out of place, no noticeable irregularities..then again i'm not a mechanic. I called MoT i'm going to bring it in to get it looked at in about an hour. I'll post when I come back.

What octane of gas are you using?

When I first removed the airfilter box in preperation for the cai, revved the engine at that point it "backfires"... Maybe you accidently revved it to that point without noticing?
My car made little bangs that could be what you are talking about... same drop in rev's too.... it made maybe 6 or 7 over the course of 8 months before my engine blew on me. Whenever I took it in they couldn't find anything wrong... Hope yours isn't what I had.
It wouldn't be the cause, but I would check the oil immediatly to make sure you're not driving around damaging your engine more.

I would of felt so much better if you hadn't said that....because that's exactly what happend to me, half the dealership looked at it and they didn't find anything wrong...
I'm using regular 87 octane...No I didn't accidently rev it, I was too busy being cold and curled up in my seat lol. I have 3 days left on my warranty...I have to decide if I want to renew it or if i'm just going to sell the car...wow that caught me really off guard.
Blackman you just gave me a heart attack.

for the relatively minimal cost, I would buy the warranty.

I had that happen to me too. It only happens when the car has been out in the cold for a long time, around 6-8 hours or so. Same sudden rev up to about 3k rpm, then back down to normal. I always thought this was normal :S

I think the rev could be considered normal. It's the mini "explosions" he's probably worried about. That and the story about engine failure probably doesn't help

Renew it for the 500 bucks or whatever it is. Better to be safe than sorry. I didn't mean to give you a heart attack... but... when mine would pop or bang then it would lose power and revs would drop to almost nothing. I'd shut it off and it would drive fine again. It almost sounded like a popped tire or something. Maybe not as loud... but along the same lines. Just so you know... the cost on labour and my engine was $8300 + or so. I'd renew it just incase... I am glad mine happened under warranty. Mine happened with 6000km left. If I could go back in time I would have extended mine. Just wanted to give you info... sorry if I made you worry more.

Cheapest option is 999.99 plus 275.00 surecharge...that extends it to 100,000km and 60months. I'll get that tomorrow just to be safe. But I guess i'm kind of glad it happend, if it didn't I wouldn't of known my warranty expires in the next 3 days.
Funny thing about the warranty is it started on feb 29th 2004, and there is no feb29 in 2007 LOL....however the business manager at mot said I can't use that as a bargaining chip and that it just means my warranty will end on the 28th :(.
