Allo allo,

I'm shopping for 225 / 40 / 18 tires.:bana2

Question 1: Load rating. 88? 92? or does it matter.

Question 2: Treadwear 280 should last two summers right?

Question 3: I've come across cheapy summers. 'Ling Long' tires.

http://www.stephanietires.com/LingLong/L688.gif

Specs: 225 / 40 / 18 92W 280AA

I can get them for about 110$ a tire. Yes I know, you get what you pay for, but I don't exactly have a ton of money. Does anyone have a review or know any good or bad stories with ling long?

Question 4: I'm am open to all suggestions for a set of tires UNDER 600$ for a set. I like Tires23 offer of $560 for the Fierce UHP tires but its still up there on the cost charts. Suggestions please.....

i just found out on tire rack, the rsa's we all used to have or still have is rated at 260AA.

so i would presume the tire you're looking at will last more than that.

Thats the thing, like these Ling Longs look like Yokohama's so I'm wondering if they're more or less then same with a slightly worse tire rubber. But their rating isn't bad.

Has no one heard of or had friends who used Ling Longs?

doughboy, where is a Wanli dealer?

i've never herd of ling longs, and to be honest, they sound really funny...

but anyhow. not sure where wanli dealers are, i'm sure you can google it, i know some online US retailers sell them. Found them on ebay too, super cheap. Like 4 of those tires above for $180USD

3GFX
03-03-2007, 05:01 PM
Wow, thats even cheaper than the Ling Longs.

That brings me to another question...can I trust Ebay tire sellers?

Anyone buy from them? I know the usual, check there history and comments but its a big ticket item you know? Suggestions/comments?

doughboyr6
03-03-2007, 05:12 PM
if they are a major tire seller, i have no problems with that.

a lot of stores sell on ebay as well as online or even have a store front...

if they are just some joe blow selling one single set, i probably wouldn't do it

What bothers me is the fact that is its coming in from the states or something the duty is gonna be huuuuuuuuge!

depends entirely on how they ship it...

USPS, no problems, i picked up 3 sets of motorcycle tires from the post office once. BOught them from the US and i think i paid $30 for taxes/duties. That's all 3 sets at once not $30 each time

Also, you can ship to an address in the US and pick them up there. I do that on a routine basis. I get away with having to pay lesser taxes/duties a lot of the time.

If you need more info, i can fill you in via PM

I'm gonna be buying my tires online from the US, since i can get much nicer tires for much cheaper than here...i'm gonna be shipping them there also.

Totally agree. I think I might just go with the Tires23 deal. 560 for the fierce. The thing is that the place where I'm getting my rims is offering me brand new ling longs for 100$ a tire, because he's got a decent stock of them.

the wanli looks very close to the Dunlop SP9000

often times, the chinese tire manufacturers either buy the license to the tire mold/design, make some changes (if any), or rip off a major tire design and then, in both cases, use "less sophisticated" rubber compounds to keep the price down.

the big name tire manufacturers caught on to this and started releasing tires under a new name (Fuzion/Bridgestone, Fierce/Goodyear) with similar tread patterns to the mothership's brand but not near the rubber composition (the fierce UHP look similar to Goodyear's highly regarded F1 GS-D3).

for the price of the chinese brands, if you're not gonna punish them in any way, why not :)

3GFX

I want some grip...they are rated Z, W or Y and most have AA temperature ratings. I wan't to be able to push them a little, but nothing extreme.

I'm guessing they just older technology, maybe a differnet combo of synthetics. I haven't heard any horror storries and obviously I'll get better tires when these wear out.

They all look very close to each other in tread design. Its to bad no one works at the tire company so I'd know the differnce.

Still looking for suggestions :)

doughboyr6

i don't think you'll have to worry much about the chinese brand if its just for daily driving...i'm sure anything is better than the RSAs...

the only thing about the chinese brands that may worry me is the safety issue...don't want no premature failure/blow out.

+1 I'd also like to know how the noise is for these two brands. I myself and looking for new rubbers and would like to know how these are compared to the RSAs in regards to noise.

(now that I think about it, it wouldn't matter, I just realized my exhaust drones out alot of outside noise)

perosnally i would stay away from the 512.. on our board.. i have seen horror stories with ppl that have a mild drop (progress or pro-kit) and the inside of their 512 is finished after 1 summer of normal driving.. they are considering changing them this summer..

Kevin@nextmod
03-15-2007, 12:20 PM
^^ will that depend on what kind of rim offset and what size tires they use and how low they go?

512s are some very good all season tires. My friend with his Celica have it on and it handles very well. Price is good as well considering they are pretty grippy on dry weather too.

The falken 512 i will not recommend. My friend got that for his accord and it sucked ass in winter in snow. But in the summer they are pretty good with water and they are grippy.

And +1 on the michelin pilot tires. My parents have a set on there camry and they are good in snow and wet, but ice you gotta be careful.

i guess this makes sense ONLY if you're receommending the 512s for SUMMER only as an UHP alternative..

I bought a set from Tires23 they gave me a great price....and then a few months later, they lowered the price even more! I wasn't mad at all since they treated me very well and the service they provided more then made up the price difference.

Drove all the way from Sudbury

Great tire and not noisy at all....definitely quieter than the crappy RSA's

3GFX
03-15-2007, 03:23 PM
Thanks guys!

From all this I'll narrow it between the firce and generals although I'm leaning to the generals, I just don't like the centre contact patch, I'm used to a much more solid pattern.

The thing about the 512s is that 225/40/18 is rated w, amd therefore probably not all season, because the rest of the range is H and V. But if wear is an issue I must toss that idea because I will be lowering onto a rim with a 45 offset.

I still would like to hear a review of the Fierce, because I like the tread pattern better than the Exclaim UHP, but I believe with the high treadwear (480) they will be noisy. We'll see I still have to sell my stock 17s.

doughboyr6
03-16-2007, 10:23 AM
between the General/Falken. I've herd great things about both...but i'd go with the General. I've just herd so much about them...they aren't pretty to look at, but they seem to perform amazingly and can apparantly handle a little light snow.

3GFX
03-16-2007, 01:53 PM
Thats what bothers me too, they will never touch snow. But they've got great reviews especially from guys on the forum.

for the look i find they look nice.. but you shouldn't really go for a tires for it's look.. their pretty populr on m3f also.. some ppl have even done 50k km on them.. which is pretty good!

3GFX
03-17-2007, 11:04 AM
Well its not really the look. When I say look, I mean my preferance on contact patch. The centre section is very broken up, I'm not a fan of that. The Fierce on the other hand is very continuous. It has a consistent centre block that really isn't broken up. The inside and outside tread design is super important. Idealy large 'block' of rubber on the outside and a continous black in the center.

i've only found 2 reviews on the fierce tires so far... both positive, but it's too early to know for sure.. so far they report very little road noise and excellent grip.

However, the generals are rated #1 for consumer survey on tire rack. So, people really like them especially for the price.

I think either one is a good choice. but with the tires23 special, the fierce will be around 60 bucks less compare to the generals.

baymoe
03-25-2007, 01:57 PM
Try to stay away from the Ziex512 tires. I've ran through two sets without knowing any better. On my corolla, they lasted probably 1.5 summers to 2 summers at the most. They handle beautifully compared to regular allseaons but, they wear too fast. On top of that, with only 4-6/32nds of their tread life left, they handle horribly in the rain. Kumho SPTs or Yoko ES100 FTW. Much tighter feel with those tires due to the stiffer sidewalls.

chinsterr
03-25-2007, 04:16 PM
I think tires23 has a good deal on a set of Federal Tires right now , I cant remember what model but the tread pattern looks similar to the fierce --- this tire has got great reviews by alot of people on the evo forum in this states.

My only recommendation is stay away from fusions.

The General Exclaim is currently rated #1 on tire rack right now, and the price is less than half what some of the other brands are (if you drive to Buffalo that is).

I've heard that the treadware ratings aren't apples to apples compatible since each company judges against its own tires, hence the independant surveys.

Don't hesitate to correct me if I'm wrong as it wouldn't be the first time.

majic
03-26-2007, 09:55 AM
well that is PROBABLY the real life scenario as the rs-ass have UTQG of 280 and they barely last 50K

in the ideal world ;) everyone would have a baseline of 100 and run their tires till they shred and record how many kms they lasted.. then compare it to the baseline but all they care is about profit and good numbers ;)

3GFX
03-26-2007, 09:59 AM
Supposedly the tires are supposed to be tested against a common bar and then rated. I haven't heard of tires only being rated within the company.

WOW!!!!! Just got off the phone with the OK Tire in Barrie. Sorry wingnut but they are a rip off. He also told me with a sale of 12 sets he'd save us tax. Either way he's a rip off.

I got quoted over $1000 for General Exclaim UHP 225/40/18 balanced and installed. Even if we formed a group buy that an average of $300 more than what I've been quoted, and over $400 more than what SSG can quote.

OKay, I just got off the phone with OK tire again.

Breakdown I got was for the 215/45/17 is:

533.00 Balanced, and installed or
or 612.95 if we aren't doing a group buy

IMHO might not be worth driving up from Toronto,
but if you live in Barrie or close to it, 533.00 is the best deal I've seen yet
if we get 3 people buying a set each, and he said he'll also do it on his Toyos, Kuhmos, Perellis, or Bridgestones.

I'm going to hit up my local (barrie) board as well. PM me, or just call OK tire if you want in.

For those prices (no one will go for a group buy in Barrie, imho) you should check out our sponsors here. Prices are better and they are in town, and from what I've heard from other members their service is top notch.

Thanks GFX. If Rinse's quote is accurate, it's a difference of less than 15.00.
Not worth me driving down to T.O., or you all driving up here.

I'm also part of the local scene up here though so basically it ends up that us Barrie boys will end up with close to the same prices as T.O. without driving down.

That's a legitmate question, here's the answer:

SSG is short for Supershyguy which is a member/sponsor of the forum. You can find his section here: http://www.torontomazda3.ca/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=180

Send him a PM if your interested in something.

T23 is Tires 23, they are also a sponsor/member and their section can be found here:

Thanks 3GFX, much appreciated! I'm looking at the General Ex's and the Falken 512's, does anybody prefer one over the other? I do a lot of km's (100 a day just to go to and from work) and am not an overly agressive driver (although it is fun on the 407 sometimes) and swap out the tires during the winter, what do people suggest?

I decided to go with the Exclaims, they are more of a summer tire where as the 512 is technically an all season. I prefer the larger tread blocks on the Exclaim as well.

Thanks, that's what I was leaning more towards according to the reviews and whatnot. For a few bucks more you get a higher tread rating and what seems to be a slightly better tire, thanks once again for your input!

Ok... Ill chime in here.... I have gone with the Falken 512's.... Here is my reason and credentials..... During the summer months for the last few years, I have been an instructor for the APDS (audi performance driving school)... That being said, I have tracked almost each set of tires from Falken. They give us great deals and we go through a lot of tires! and I do mean a lot! LOL. Most of the sizes are 17's with the occaisional 18 being used. None of the cars have been "dropped" .. all are stock set ups with replaced OEM rubber... with the exception of the RS4/S4.... we keep stock sizes on them.

The 512 also rarely see's track as it is in my opinion a ASUHP if you will.... All season UHP. This is a great tire with a softer sidewall and UHP like handling/gripping qualitys. My car right now is a full MS setup and to me, it is very very firm..... On my car, I will be running 18's and the car's ride is stiff enough... Thus going with the 512's rather than the 452's (those on 17's and dont mind a little stiffer ride... GO FOR THEM!) . As well, I am lazy when it comes to changing the tires at snowfall. The 512 will get you home (slowly) and buy you a bit of time for those procrastinators of TM3 , myself included. Now dont take this as JP's advice to run 512 in the winter as they act much like the RSA's do in snow... actually a little better. All summed up, if you like your ride and dont mind a little stiffer.... 452's all the way! Now if you have a stiff ride and are moving up to 18's.... go with the 512's. Both of which are not very expensive and the treadwear is good-fine IMHO. On the track, they still do alright and will be fine for some spirited driving around all the potholes in TO. The difference in performance from the 452-512 is not big at all .... At the end of the day, it is not how your tire drives you... it is how you drive your tire ;) (that is copyrighted by me btw) :P lol.

BTW- Tires23 is who im getting my 512's from.... just under 500 taxes in mounted and balanced in 18...... my rims offset will be +48...

Damn, thats a good deal. I went for the General Exclaim UHP, just for the reason that I don't want all season uhps.

The General Exclaim UHPs seem to be the best bang for buck performance tire out there, and have excellent reviews. Another selling point for me was better wet weather traction that many other tires. The Exclaim has greater resistance to hydroplaning in higher water depths. This is important to me because I've been through some heavy rain on the 401 and prefer to be confident in resitence to hydroplanning.

To sum up the thread to date:

If your looking for a tire set of around or under $600 your best options are the Falken 512s or General Exclaim UHPs. These are both well known brands with good records. Both tires ride well, have decent treadwear and are not noisy.

+1 I agree with 3GFX on this one. To differentiate a little more, the 512 will be a little softer ride...with a little less performace in spirited driving. The GE's will be a little sportier all around. Both are the best bang for your buck and on a silly selling point, they both look "ok" ;)

I was looking for a set of UHP summer tires but ended up getting a set of 17s 512s which i'm more than happy with, even though they are categorized as all season, they work pretty much as HP summers, plus if look at 1010 tires reviews they've been rated 4.0 with 700+ reviews beside the GE which is also 4.0 but with only 29 costumer reviews.

Thats what made my choice, also, the price, I got em from SSG for $455. :)

Damn 400$ (or even slightly more) is damn awesome. I will also call for a quote, and if its under $500 installed he can have my nut enclosed in a gold case with burgandy velvet lining.

SSG got me a good quote on General Exclaim UHPs installed, I also recommend him, throw him a PM, he's really good too.

That being said I'm still looking around as I am also still trying to sell my stock rims.

Thanks for the referrals
