so for the past 2-3 tanks my car's been behaving badly.. having 78500km on it i was slowly leaving skid marks on my undies.. it started on a one cold night, right next to a frieplace, there i was with my.... err.. shit..

ok so there was no rhyme or reason for the stalling.. it would happen on a cold engine.. on a fully warmed up engine.. it would happen with the fuel light on and then with half tank of gas.. first time it happened i though i just forgot to take the geer out of 5th or whatever.. but when i tried doing just that later it felt MUCH different (bogged the engine and all so i knew that wasn't a user error)

when i was coasting (shut up weasel :chuckle) to a light/stop sign/traffic, the car would just stall.. intermittently.. maybe 5-7 times per tank? sometimes more.. anyway, the stalling wasn't harsh.. the engine would shut off and i would still have power steering until i stopped.. no jerking.. it was a gentle stall.. the more annoying part was stalling in reverse b/c unless i gassed it to 2000-3000RPM i would not make it out of the parking spot/garage/etc.. once again it would be a gentle stall but sometimes i'd need 3 attempts to back out.. feathering the clutch as i'd normally do it to control the reverse speed was useless..

so what to do? no CELs no nothing.. called my 1st level tech support (aka majesticbluento and flipspeed) and they were puzzled.. we discussed an array of options from fuel delivery system problems, maf, relays to bad gas from the shortage of gasoline in the past month..

funny thing.. for the past 3 months, my fuel economy has been better than ever averaging 8.6L/100km city/hwy combined and getting as low as 8.06L/100km.. water in the gas lines and crappy gas quality didn't seem to play a role.. i do recall a fuel pump recall :chuckle but that threw CELs and there were other issues with it..

so to make this story a bit shorter.. part 2 will come soon - the solution :D and the service at MoT..

anyone else want to guess what the problem was? :)

did i mention all this happening with a smidgen under 80000km on the odometer??? talk about pressure!!

(my guess in these situations is usually the fuel filter - needs to be changed)

Probably a fuel delivery problem. Fuel pump? Injectors plugged?
But than again it is a Mazda. lol

it was the purge valve and it was replaced under warranty.. more on the experience with MoT here (http://torontomazda3.ca/forum/showthread.php?p=159226)

I had an issue with the Purge Solinoid (sp?) back at 30,000 kms. However, I only experienced stalling after filling up gas.

Reason was the fuel system depressurized when I opened the gas cap. The purge solinoid would be stuck, unable to repressurize the fuel system.

The solinoid was replaced under warranty.

this was a different issue from what i understand.. no CELs here and i hear the solenoid threw CELs..
