Hey all,
Just trying to see who here is running vista and if you like it and maybe what speed CPU you have.
If you do have it, mention what CPU you have (ie: Core 2 Duo 2.16 Ghz) and if you like it. If your not running Vista, why not!
Thanks all :)
P.S. I am still on XP because Vista plain blows from what I have seen of it and my AMD 3700 is not fast enough to run it :(

Yeah, I have it on my home PC.
Seems to run good. 2 gig memory and a Dual Core 3.2

Don;t run it, and don;t plan to for a while. MS has some real issues with putting out a good product upon release. I will stick with XP for now, as there is no need to switch for me...

My god, with 2 gb of ram and a 3.2 Pentium D, that should be good enough.
How do you guys like the stupid pop-ups asking you if your sure you want to do this and that? A friend at work told me, if you want to move or delete something, you have to agree 3 times or something silly like that.
I tried the RC version of Vista on my computer, it was just slow. Maybe I just need a new computer.

took like 5 years to get xp finally running smooth on my computer, i won't be switching anytime soon. I'll let microsoft fix bugs/glitches for a couple years before I load it up. :D
I have the ability to run it, but I'm going to wait #1 until its hacked and #2 its first service pack.
My brother just bought a new computer with vista and has had a hard time already. He is the avg computer user and know a bit about computers. He said setting up certain things like the new mail client (outlook replacement) is a pure pain.
Vista was released way to early it just looks pretty.

Running XP and don't plan on switching anytime soon. I'll let others find most of the problems first before I switch over.

Maybe waiting a bit after the service pack is wise to...... Remember SP2? LOL! :bang

I agree on waiting. I think alot of people will make the switch once something like SP1 comes out. I am actually looking into buying a Mac but I dunno, my computer is good for atleast another 6 months
i just scored a free copy from MS Ultimate but i think ill wait :pop

You can turn the notification on or off. It's easy. Do a help search (Vista Help built into the os) for User Account Control. It will give you steps.

why pay (or steal) to upgrade when it's just EYE candy and more useless fluff on top of all the shit being backwards with the 'innovative' menus and shit? ha!
if only the ****ing broadcom chip had proper support under linux my lappy would be running ubuntu..
aaanyway.. is there a way to make vista LOOK like xp? lol.. and i don't mean the desktop but i mean all the other functions too.. might take a stab at it but i'll keep my license of XP handy thanks..

I'm not running Vista, but that's just because I don't care. Vista has not shown me anything that I want badly, and if I were to run it I'd have to do some hardware upgrades which I just don't feel is necessary. XP for a few more years.

There is a way to make Ubuntu look even better then Vista. Once I find the link at work, I will post it here and you will see what it can do, it will be a video clip and you will be amazed
As for your broadcom nic, we have laptops at work with them and we are using Slackware no problem. If it's wireless then you have to use a ndiswrapper, if a normal nic, then you need to recompile the kernel and add support for that nic, not too hard

Actually, I found the link. Look at this video

i saw the clip..
as i said.. the ONLY thing preventing me from running linux on my lappy is that it uses broadcom wifi chip and i've tried 4 distros (ubuntu, knoppix, mandriva, suse) and neither would play nice with wifi.. it would only work if i disabled encryption :(
*sigh*
anyway.. vista sux.. resource hog and a purdy interface.. that's it..

i installed the vista home upgrade not too long ago....i love the look of it. i want to go back to xp until ms has released the service packs, but it will not allow me to reinstall or format the hard drive. does anyone know how to fix this?
P.S. i also want to try out the ubuntu.

the great thing about ubuntu is you can use the live cd and run it off cd .. yes it will be a bit slower but you do not need to install anything so you can run it and then go back to windows by just rebooting!!!

No Vista here. I think i was the last person on earth to upgrade to XP from Windows 95.
There is no way i'm paying for that thing.

Vista = More Style than Substance, for now atleast!
As a matter of fact, that is the biggest misconception with Windows Vista. Although Aero Glass (The new UI of Vista) is the most heavily advertised, there is actually far more functionality and core changes than in any other Windows transition.
I'm still trying to discover them all, but for example, having the ability to create new partitions and resize current partitions without needing to exit windows or reboot the system ins an awesome feature. I can resize and create partitions within 5 minutes, compared to 15-20 minutes using PartitionMagic on XP.
The User Account Control (the pop ups that ask you to confirm actions affecting the system) can be disabled.
As for security, The XP Core was based off of Windows 2000, the Vista Core is based off of SERVER 2003. Being based off of server software, it makes the system more secure as the security policy is much more intensive than just a workstation operating system.
For the record, Vista Service Pack 1 is scheduled for release in April. However, this service pack was prepared before even the Vista release. This service pack is to be released to add features that were originally held back to meet the January 30th release date.
Oh how the masses have successfully assimilated some of you guys...
Isn't it a PROBLEM when you have to have a top-of-the-line configuration in order to run a freakin OPERATING SYSTEM?
That just doesn't make sense to me.
Just like how some people dress up in designer brand name shiet just to go to Wal-Mart.
* goes back to his k-mart wardrobe to shop at the dollar-store (P3 933 1GB RAM) hahaha

question is, how much do you trust winbloze in partitioning your system? i don't..

umm.. isn't that the whole point of it .. to 'protect you' and prevent you from running in admin mode all the time? and yes it's annoying so ppl will turn it off defeating the purpose.. way to go M$ :loco

LOL.. LOL!!! sucka! well if they still allow you to circumvent the policies by 'disabling the elevated priveledges' then that os 'as secure as server os' becomes a little more secure than windows 95 :)

lol.. b/c they need to patch it up already.. release a ****ing product that requires no patches and 7? 10? years of development and gazillions of dollars so that people would need to update their hardware for the aero look and all the DRM infestedness.. do you know they had to re-do their file system as they wanted to use an xml based one and weeks if not days after the initial release there were a couple viruses for it.. STELLAR if you ask me..
EDIT: apologies if i sounded harsh.. but you must have been quoting your Best Buy sales manual and the leaflet that came to you from M$ HQ on 'how to upsell to those who don't need it' :chuckle
I like the vista usb ram readyboost function. Neat idea.
Linux is fun & works well... but for 95% of the os users out there... windows is the only os that they will be able to install & setup on their own. For now.
When linux becomes more user friendly... thats when more people with 'try' it out.

does it actually work??? if anything you should experience a DECREASE in performance..
why?
average read/write speeds of a USB key: 30MB/s (overexaggerated but lets just talk numbers)
average read/write speed of ram: 1.6GB/s (and we're talking ANCIENT DDR-200, DDR-400 is twice that and DDR2-800 has a throughput of 6.4GB/s
ok so those are theoretical so let's take 10% of it which is absurd, 640MB/s and we're still 20x faster than USB sticks
i guess this is only good for those aging systems that have no room for additional RAM or for the cheapskates who can get 1GB usb keys for a penny (literally) on sale and after mail in rebates

have you tried it lately? i think u mentioned it in another thread.. i forget.. the gnome gui and the more user friendly setup and all have come a LONG way.. i guess i should test this on my mom who would probably get all lost and confused with a new interface.. heh.. anyway.. it's way less obscure than it used to be but you have to have at least a slight aptitude to learn a few things here and there

I agree with Maj... (Scary thought... *shudders) lol
Did anyone else consider Vienna is rumored to be coming out in 2 years? Heck, by the time Vista is actually patched and running well Vienna will be out. Hopefully it wont be as rushed or problem ridden.
Most people buying budget systems (probably the majority of sales) will receive Windows Vista Basic, and correct me if I am wrong, but it doesnt come with this new UI does it? That means they are now running Windows XP with DRM, and it is probably running slower on their PC than XP would... good move.
I also like the fact that the "Added Security" in Vista is a complete and udder JOKE. This was a fun read: http://www.cnet.com.au/software/operatingsystems/0,239029541,339273465,00.htm
Linus is pretty easy. Is it simple like Windows? Not yet. But it has made HUGE strides in the last 5yrs that should really give Windows something to think about. Hell its free! lol. More and more open source Apps that look and perform the same as their windows conterparts etc...

One end of the scale is "Free" and at the other end is "Bill Gates"

Yep. Used many in the last year. I prefer the look of gnome (looks more like mac) over kde (looks more like windows). It isn't easy by any means for an average computer user!
Sure you can format your drive & throw in the cd and let it setup... but try tweaking some stuff to get it to work just right. The average user would have a hard time getting comfy.
I've put linux on my buddies comp's when they get fed up with windows and they love it... for a day... then when they try to install something... they call me and say... **** put windows back on lol.
Yes it has come a long way... but it still needs to come further before the average user will try it out and enjoy it!

Did anybody watch that clip? It is a bit boring at the beginning but where they start using Ubuntu, it looks amazing wow
This seems like a heated debate lol. I don't have Vista yet but if I don't get a Mac within a year, I will buy Vista. I love XP. It works like a charm and I know how to use it like a champ.

And XP came out shortly after....so I guess I'm waiting for the next OS :P

I won't even think about touching Vista for a couple of years until they've had time to work out the bugs and security. Besides, XP-Pro works great. And if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
