View Full Version : Burnt HID, need advice

Seems one of my HID's is burnt (WTOM, fyi!). P!sser.

So I'm wondering if it's advisable to change both bulbs at the same time or just change the burnt one. I'm thinking if I just change the one, is there the risk of colour variance / light output (they will be the same temp; my concern about colour/output is based in quality control)? I will have 2 bulbs from different batches.

Any comments (specifically about the HID's ;) are appreciated.

have you narrowed it down to the BULB for sure? eg. swapped ignitors/ballasts/bulbs to isolate..

if it's the bulb then i would unfortunately go and buy 2 unless you can buy one and see if it matches but it might be hard based on the usage of the current bulb..

twice i have blown an HID bulb,
both times i just switched one

the match has been good!
first time it was perfect right away,

the second time, it was a bit off at first, but now it is good! (month later)

Which side is burnt? I've had times were I thought my driver side was burnt but after playing around with the wires it comes back on.

I have noticed that both sides fire up. One side is stronger than the other; then a few minutes later, one is out. Bates is already aware; he told me it sounds like the bulb. I've asked for an appt to have a looksee.

Passenger side. When ur's came back one, were they strong?

I'll see what Jeff has to say about it. I'm hoping I can just get the 1 bulb cuz I don't want to shell out for 2 ;)

who's bates? jeff? at lockdown?? what you describe is a perfect example of the ballast going south.. that's exactly what happened with mine.. flickered on stayed on and then died.. when i turned the light off/on same thing varying in time..

swap the bulbs for a quick test.. it'll take 10min and you'll know whether you have to buy a bulb or a ballast!

check the connectors for oxidation or anything to reduce contact. Was the colour of the light different during the start up period? (I mean is the right visible more yellow then the left)

Have you checked to see if each side has enough ground?

did you swap the bulbs yet? 10 min test and you will know right away if it's the bulb or ballast.. or something that would require further diagnosis..

with bulb swap, you can eliminate the bulbs (duh).. then there are ballasts.. ignitors and relay(s).. it'll save you a trip to a shop.. unless they are 5min away and the checkup is free..

I haven't tried the test. I'm going to let Jeff take a look b/c I believe some of the parts and check up are under warranty. And I'm too lazy! lol

So it was the bulb that was burned out. After having it swapped out I noticed a difference in the colour. The new bulb had a 6000K sticker, but is yellower than my original 6000K. Does anyone have experience with this? I don't recall any change to the colour of the bulbs when I originally had the kit installed.
