I'm only at about 4000km but thinking of doing my oil change around 5k. Some quick questions.
1.
Is the 8000km service mandatory? What is it besides an oil change?
2.
Can I give the dealership my own oil for them to install for me during that appointment?
3.
Ends up, I've got a friend of a friend who has a racing company. I can get Amsoil racing synthetic pretty cheap (gotta call for $'s) and wondering if anyone knows if Amsoil is a worth while company to go with. Example being, I thought Mobile1 was great until I read they changed there formula.
4.
Flippy, if you read this by chance, could you PM me a price for a case of cartridge filters.

if you want to keep your warranty i'd say so.. then again i haven't been denied warranty work b/c i hadn't had mazda service performed and all oil changes but 1 were done at speedy.. now that i am out of warranty this wouldn't be of any concern

yes.. you will get charged for the oil cartridge and the labour so in the end you don't save much :(

can't comment on this and i don't want to get into a pissing contest on oils anyway.. read up bobistheoilguy and see what they use over at mazda6tech.com.. i still get my mobil1 5W20.. b/c walmart has it for $36 and change

1. I'll let others answer this :)
2. Yes you can, and the change should be cheaper.
3. From what I hear Amsoil is good, though I've not tried it. I've used Royal Purple in the past and now use RedLine. Be sure to use a full synthetic, not a blend.

For what it's worth, a friend of mine with an RSX-S swears by Amsoil.

oh and the 8K service should be this (http://www.whitbymazda.com/en/service/maintenance/index.spy?presetmakeid=&make=Mazda&model=3&year=2005&lcarids=1053900105%7CSport+GT#dropmenu)
Replace engine oil
Replace oil filter
Inspect function of all lights
Inspect brake and clutch fluid, power steering fluid, washer fluid and coolant level
Inspect tire inflation and tire wear
Lubricate all locks and hinges
i'd do these ones and the rest you can inspect/do yourself..
also this..
Mazda Canada has set up all their maintenance packages to maximize your savings and protect your vehicle based on their experience. These packages are significantly cheaper then when you split up these operations and do them separately. Here is an example:
A straight lube oil and filter = $36.74 tax in - you get only and oil and filter change
A Type 1 service with no tire rotation = $42.13 taxes included - you get an oil and filter change (value 36.74) + front to back peace of mind inspection(value 48.88) + hand wash (value $12.00) + fluid top up (value 2.50) = $100.12 In other words you get $100.12 worth of service for $42.13
Or a Type 1 service with a tire rotation = $60.31 which is the same as the above plus a tire rotation (value $29.33) = $129.45
In other words you get $129.45 worth of service for $60.31
good.. needs to be done
debatable how thorough/necessary this is
nice but ain't free..
i guess.. but how often do they actually top it up? back at GM dealer i could definitely hear the fluids being pumped

Thanks majic. Clear and dry answers.
I'll look into Amsoil's quality.
As for the "extra's" when getting service done, no thanks. Especially some greasy gritty wash mit scratching up my paint. And I can spend the 5-8minutes checking and filling up the fluids, saving 48.88 (aka highway robbery).
