I noticed a few rust spots starting to appear in the paint on the side door panels of my 3. I took it to the dealership and they told me it's spraying back from the rusting calipers. Has anyone experienced this at all.

Napes. What year is your car? Mine was built in 2003 so I would bet mine is one of the older mazda 3's in the area and I don't have even one spot yet.

Its quite possible they are right, I've found rust spray from the rotors a couple of times but usually behind the front fender and low. If it comes off easy with a light waxing then don't worry about it.....Have you clay barred your vehicle since you bought it?

its metal shavings that dig into your paint and rust and its pretty impossible to get it out..very unfortunate, my rear bumper is slowly turning orange from them

I've heard (elsewhere on this forum) that it is rail dust (do a search w/those words & you should find it). What colour is your car? Mine is white and has it all over - but I bought used and not from a dealership so I'm going to try to use the clay bar and hope it gets rid of them...

Aren't the calipers aluminum?
Edit.. nevermind... I imagine it's coming from the rotors...
Think first... then post...

My car is silver, I can see it up close but its pretty much invisible from a couple feet back. There's a lot of it though. I was told this happens when it rains.

White cars have this problem , and it is especially noticable on the trunk !
I used Turtlewax Liquid Clay and it removed ALL the orange spots, no lie. However, it is very VERY VERY time consuming so i only got around to doing half the car (and half the trunk, you can literally see the difference).

I have seen those rust spots before on my car before I got my first rotor change. clay bar takes them right off.

Using a Clay Bar should get it all!, but you might have to do it a few times. And I think having a white car is actually a blessing because you can see the spots better, hence you know its there. On a darker vehicle you'll almost never see it till its too late, like when the rust is all the way thru. Those little rust spots you see most likely are actually the imbedded particles which are rusted not the vehicles panels themselves. It takes a long time before the particles can work their way thru to the actual body metal.

Happens to my car all the time, spend a few hours claying the car and they will be gone.

I have the same problem, only on the doors though. My car is silver.
Off topic. Whats the purpose of using a clay bar?

heh. No... I posted the question and then the answer occurred to me. Then, when I went to edit it, I just couldn't think of anything intelligent to replace it with so I just put my correction in.
If you edit a post before anyone's read it, it won't have the little "edited" tag in it. :)

I didn't really want a white car but bought used and it was the best deal but I've tried to look on the bright side :) - and that's what I thought, too - white will show rust sooner and I can get it taken care of right away! Still would have like an orange one, though!
I think I'll try the clay bar this weekend.

I used the clay bar yesterday and it was a great improvement although at first I wasn't being aggressive enough to remove all the spots so I have to go over some of those places again. It took me a couple of hours to wash & dry my car and then a couple to clay bar so my shoulder needs a day or two to recover...

I looked on Mazda.ca and perforation is 5 year warranty.
I imagine a little rust doesn't fall into the "perforation" category?

Perforation would be a hole made by the rust. And these little pinpoints of rust are unlikely to perforate within 5 years...??unfortunately??

Yes, the little spots probably won't rust fast enough through paint and metal.
The guy who had wheel well rust may be able to get something done though.

If those little 'rust spots' are not looked after, they may very well rust right thru within 5 years but, they will not be covered under warranty...As far as I remember 'Perforation' is basically rust which occurs from the inside-out.If your vehicle's rust because of scratches or rail dust or whatever, basically from the outside-in, Mazda will not cover it because they see it as neglect....and they would be right.
