you need to extract the video with winRAR. Have you done that ?

let me first preface this by saying Downloading movies/music/games etc. is against the law and by no means do any of the owners or patrons of this forum condone or endorse breaking this or any other laws.
That being said... :chuckle
Depending on the format of the movie this may or may not be the case, sometimes movies come in .ISO format or a similar compiled file format, ready to be burned to a CD.

from the type of questions you're asking, maybe you should stick to Kazaa.
do a google search for "torrent faq" if you want to learn more.

Use "Utorrent" (http://www.utorrent.com/), it's fast for me.
You can download WinRar here. (http://www.download.com/WinRAR/3000-2250_4-10690736.html?tag=lst-0-2) http://www.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/happy/happy0025.gif

The torrent software used isn't the only thing that will determine speed.
Factors such as available seeds, NAT/firewall/port forwarding, ISP will affect speed more so than the software IMO.

All torrents are RAR'ed.
But yes , once the file is extracted it could be an ISO, AVI, MPEG, whatever

Once you become more affiliated with the software you'll be able to tweak it and get the most out of your internet connection. However, I'd highly recommend downloading Peer Guardian http://phoenixlabs.org/pg2/. Since Rogers has started to seriously crack down on P2P sharing and is now not only limiting your DL speed but monitoring any rights infrigments.

The thing with newsgroups is that I find many instances when one post containing a piece of the download is missing. Atleast that's what I remember.

Actually that is not correct. In Canada it is legal to download for personal use, but illegal to upload.

Which in the end means the samething because with Torrents you can't do one without the other.

I know that everyone has to start somewhere and so I suggested google and what to search for. You can most likely find much more accurate and in-depth information than you will asking on this forum.

Hold on there tiger...if you're gonna ask a question atleast give the man a chance to answer it.
I may not have known the best way to do things at first but I had enough background knowledge to know what I was doing.
I know I came out being hard on you but did provide you with (what I think is) good information on how you can get started using torrents.

in Canada, downloading isn't illegal; provided you do so for your own private viewing and you don't redistribute, for profit or otherwise, what you downloaded. you're also supposed to remove it from you machine within 30 days
so until that law gets changed..(which is slowly happening)..have fun if you're in Canada :)

+1 for Newsgroups. Too bad Rogers took away newsgroups access a while back :AH (the free ride was sweet while it lasted)

That's IF you can get the newsgroups free. I find that pretty much all the "second tier" ISP providers just don't give you access to any of the good ones. When I was with Rogers Cable modem service, they had unrestricted access, now I pay half the price, but can't get any of the alt.binary newsgroups at all.

Rogers cut access to the newsgroups about a year ago... I have been using this service where I pay (I think) $17 Canadian / month and I get unlimited downloads. They have a retention of about 50 days, so things are around for quite a while, and the speed is absolutely unbeatable no matter where else you download from (300 KBits/s = about 100k / second).
Whoever commented on the mirc, that gave me a good laugh... I used to be such a nerd chilling in those warez channels :bang
If you dont know what winrar is, maybe torrents and opening ports to speed things up might be a bit difficult, but you have to learn somewhere.
A good key is to google your problem, and you will get lots of links to forums and stuff where people discuss problems and fixes, and it will be a good learning experience! You have to start somewhere :)
Also, if you have a file and you dont know what the extension is, if you use XP you should open up my computer, go to
tools --> folder options --> view --> and then uncheck the box that says "hide extensions for known file types"
Then look at the extension, and google it!

I use BitComet, and it works fast for me. Download speed is also dependant on the numbers of seeders and your connection speed to them.

who said free? you gotta pay to play ;) $40USD every 3 months is like going to the movies twice with the wifey.. at ultd speeds and downloads (10mbit connection =1.1MB/sec) movies are in just over an hour.. plus it doubles as a PVR and whatever else you may need..

i find it they cut it back in 2000 :S with access to like 20K groups and not any of the good ones with 24hr retention JOKE!!!!!!

see another reason to get hooked on newsgroups and newsleecher 3.9 onwards with repair & extract (R'nE) it does it all for you and you don't need to know anything :P

Thats why when I discovered newsgroups I was so happy... when rogers cut the access I honestly just stopped downloading stuff all together. I got into torrents, but they are just a pain in the butt - I find that the speeds with rogers are just too slow, and if you want to download something, it can take a few days.
Its worth spending the $15 a month and just paying for the newsgroup service if you download a lot :)
