something is seriously wrong with my third gear. it first started about 2 months ago, i let my buddy drive my car, i know stupid move im an idiot. so the guy was forcing the bloody stickshift into 3rd cause he couldnt find it, like forcing. ever since then there has been occasional rubbing/grinding wen putting it into 3rd sloppy. no big deal if i was careful it wouldnt happn. Just a few days ago third gear wouldnt stay, it would pop right out grinding and all. i can drive, and id say 75% of the time it stays in 3rd fine and im being so careful and gentle off the clutch, but the 25% that it pops out is horrible. someone tell me what to do. changing into third anywhere over 4500rpm it wont stay in. someone please. thanks

Not an expert but sounds like the problem my buddy had in his cavalier. In his tranny the syncros where gone.

^^ Synchors help shifting easier without the need to double clutch. I'm not tranny expert but I don't think their purpose is to help the gear stay in place...

same thing happened to mazda3team/profusion when he let vibrant prototype the sedan exhaust on his car...they ham-fisted the 3rd gear shifts and wrecked his tranny (same symptoms as you describe).

if your car is still under warranty, take it in...although, you having admitted that your friend abused it, if they do deny warranty work because of abuse, it's time for your friend to pony up the cash for a new tranny + labour.

Your idiot friend owes you a transmission. ;) If it doesn't easily go into place, why did he think forcing it would help?

alright, after reading the one section of my text book, this is what i got:

-check the transmission linkage and shift lever arms. if the shifter assembly is badly worn, it should be repbuilt or replaced.
-a worn clutch pilot bearing may also cause the transmission to jump out of gear. severe vibration, caused by the wobbling transmission input shaft, can wiggle and move the shift forks and synchronizers.
-other problems inside the tranny can cause it to jump out of gear. they include worn synchronizer inserts and springs, worn shift fork assemblies, or shaft rails, and wear and excessive play in the coutershaft and output shaft assemblies.

ok, sorry to just quote my textbook here, but im still learning all of this....
hope this helps...
but i'd place my money on the first one, the worn shifter assembly...

hey at least you're lucky you had a 3d gear. back in '04 we had a member here that picked up his brand new mazda3 and off the lof it did not have a 3d gear at all. i remember mazda has refused to warranty it saying that he just didnt know how to drive standard...

i have a cai, should i take it off before getting this warranty work done? could they relate the two and deny me warranty work?

I wouldn't think the two are related.

ya i highly doubt that... i dont see how they could connect a messed 3rd gear and a CAI

I wouldn't think the two are related.

they're not, but the dealer could say that modified = abused.

don't risk it, put the stock intake back on.

wow,... how long is the warranty for?? 80k right?

The warranty on the tranny is 5 years or 100k kms, and like Majestic said don't take any chances and take the CAI off...You don't want to give the dealer any excuses to refuse the warranty work.
