Hello,
I noticed lately, that if i tap the brake going 70ish, the car will downshift from 5th to 3rd. Its a pretty smooth. However, it used to NOT do that or it'll go to 4th. Did the transmission go into a different mode?

How does one change the modes of the automatic transmission?

I think some automatics alter the way they shift depending on how the driver normally drives. Pushing hard all the time, or just taking it easy. Not sure if the Mazda 3 does that, or to what extent.

i know adaptive automatic transmission has been around, their design principal varying by manufacture. Scroll down to "Driver Type Recognition".

I'm just wondering how to reset the damn thing. If I want to go nuts, i'd go into the sport shift mode. Ahhh wtf was my mech doing when he had my car.

Well, IF the Mazda 3 actually adapts its tranny, then one way to reset it is to drive like Granny for a while. Otherwise, the dealer would be able to reset the onboard computer. But this is all in theory.

unplug your battery (-ve) for a few minutes. if you want to hasten it, step on the brake pedal for a few seconds to drain any capacitance in the system.
when you reconnect the battery, the computers will then 're-learn' everything.

that method may not work you may have to bring it to your dealewr and have them reset the adaptation values. If mazda uses that transmission system like Fuman stated

Hello everyone !
I just bought a GS Sedan / AT, 4 weeks ago. Because this is my first car with AT, I have a question.
When I'm driving the car and I'm slowing down (to stop ) the AT is downshifting from 4 -> 3 -> 1. I don't see the 2nd on the instrument cluster. This is normal ?
Thank you !

If to a complete stop, yes. If you are rolling at like 20km/h and then gas again, the transmission will likely downshift to second.

It's exactly what you said :) When I gas again at around 20km/h, is going from 3rd to 2nd.
So, there's nothing to worry about skipping from 3rd to 1st when I depress the brake to stop.... thanks... I was :rant yesterday..
