View Full Version : HIDs & DRLs thought

Sorry if this has been discussed before. I know HID discussions go back a few years on here.
Everyone pretty much just disables the regular DRLs so that the HIDs aren't on when the DRLs are on.
But what about doing the opposite? When the DRLs are on, can full (high) power be routed to the bulbs? That way the DRLs are still (safely) the HIDs.
Is there a relay that is used to switch the power output between DRL (low) and night (high)? I'm thinking that this relay (if it exists) can be modified or replace so that when either DRLs or highs are on, it produces the same high output.
One thought I had was getting the same relay that the inner highbeam bulbs use and trying that in place of the outer low bulbs relay...
This way, there is no need to do the independent fog mod, or DRL disable mod.
I've been looking through the wiring schematics and admittedly, I'm not sure if this can be done (I'm not the greatest with wiring schematics). I figure Xenon or TheBiz can offer input?

I would try to find out what the wiring schematics are for the '07+ and rewire the 04-06 to be the same...I'm not sure how difficult that would be though. :S

It would be nice to be able to do that. I believe the 07's use the inner high bulbs as DRLs, correct? Anyone have the wiring schematics for 07's?
I photoed the wiring schematics for 06. Maybe someone can offer some insight...?

I would think it would be the DRL sensor you should look at either bypassing somehow or disconnecting yet still keep the DRL circuit to achieve this

The DRLs have a sensor?
I'm not an expert.. but I'm pretty sure there is a sensor on the dash that can determine whether or not it is bright enough outside to run low wattage DRL's only. If that could be bypassed.. your lights should just come on if you left it in 'auto' mode

Oh you are talking about the light sensor in the windshield. That honestly is not what I'm looking to do. That would be no different than just turning on the headlights all the time.

07+ yes use the inner high beam's at 1/2 power for DRL.

Hmm... Now I need the wiring schematics for the headlights on the 07's!

I'd help ya if I could. I wanna get the "bible" but sucks that the wiring schematics are another purchase all together.

Won't help.
The DRLs operate though the computer. They come on at a lower power and oscillate (IIRC) which means a relay will actually become an expensive busser and won't help.
Please let me know if you discover an easier way to fix a 04-06 in a better way than I have.

That's what I thought the schematics said, but I didn't want to believe it. The microcomputer regulates the power, so my idea won't work without modifying the microcomputer - and there are no wiring schematics for that. So it looks like this is a dead end.
