I am in the market to upgrade my speakers from stock and I want to see what others are using.

Please tell us what brand and model of speakers you put in your Mazda 3....both fronts and backs....and even the type of tweeters if you did not install components up front.

how do you like the Type X components??
how much better are they than the Type r's?

These are several years old, but they are really nice. From what I recall, the Type X seemed fuller and clearer than a similar Type R.

hmm...

cuz i know the 10" type R subs have the same specs as the JL 10W7, and the alpine is alot cheaper.
i think i will ask my friend about this tomorow if i see him...

oh, and why do you have 5.25" speakers?
i thought we all used 6x8's or 6" speakers.

To be honest, I don't know what size they are. I did a quick Google search for SPX-177a and all I came up with are 6.5" components. Without pulling off the door panel, I can't be certain. I am sure that they are SPX-177a component speakers.

I couldn't be happier with my Type R 10" sub, for the money, it sounds great!

Well, it seems like most of you are definitely putting components in the front. I was actually thinking up uprading the fronts with just a better pair of coaxials.....Alpine Type-S.....and keep the stock tweeters. Since I am not putting an amp in......I may not have enough power to push components (cleanly).

So if I want components...looks like I will not only have to spend more money on the speakers...but also on an amp and amp install too.

Highly recommend the 12" Alpine Type-R subs!
I had 2 of them in my accord and they were GREAT!

Unfortunately, the accord had a bigger trunk and I couldn't fit them in the accord without making a new box and sacrificing 70% of the trunk space (which i need)...

Do you have 6 speakers in your car or just 4? If you have 6, do you find it weird sounding when you have highs coming both from the coaxials and from the tweeters at the same time? Does the 'sound image' gets funny?

I have factory tweeters and the Fosgate 6x8s in each door along with subs in the trunk, so the highs mix well with the bass. No complaints at all.

i wouldnt think that a pair of 5 1/4 subs would really make and sufficient bass... i didnt even know they made subs that small.. lol

its a stock infinity fx45 sub enclosure and 2 subs each rated at 1 ohm. Hooked them up in series to make them 2 ohm and hooked them up to my aftermarket amp. Sufficient amount of bass and it does do very well. 5 1/4 inch subs are not available on the market but they are for stock systems just do not use the stock amps lol

JL CX650csi's in front,
JL ProWedge 10W6v2 in back.

Tweeters in stock placement, but angled slightly toward windshield.

Very natural sound, very good soundstage and tight-ass bass, not boomy.

Simple set-up, but very pleased.

I am wondering if any of your is powering your components off just the HU and no amp.

The oem HU does not have enough power to run components properly imo, you'd definitely need an amp.

I'm running my components off the stock HU. Same volume, a little less bass but the sound is very clear, so it compensates... I'm sure an amp would help, but it's a clear improvement!

WHere do you put your amps? Behind the back seats?

I am wondering if people still put amps under the seats anymore? THe amps are so big nowadays.

My two are bolting to my sub box with is then bolted to the trunk floor.

I just had to take some of the decorative trim from one of the amps to make it fit, but it does the job well without having to worry about heat transfer to the seats.

STOCK STOCK STOCK STOCK STOCK! I know that sucks. Next year I will get it upgraded.....I think . Maybe I will just add a amp and sub and see. I am not somone that has to have the music pounding so I can't even ****ing hear my self think anyway. And I don't want to loose the stock head unit anyway, I love the stock look.

The great part is you don't have to loose your OEMHU to get good sound.I still use my OEMHU and it sounds great. IMO, its all in the components you choose, a good quality LOC, a couple of good amps, and the most important part; High quality speakers and you'll have a system that, yes it can pound if you want it too, but at the same time sound amazingly at low volumes...clarity, separation and depth will be much better.

and take a look at Ebay.... everything is dirt cheap there...
i got my speakers at cost pricing ($200/pair), and they're still way cheaper on Ebay.

so with that being said, im getting my amp from ebay when i can afford to buy stuff again.

Yes, I do. I have two PPI amps, one under each seat with a cap and fuses there too. I have PPI PC2600.2 and cap under one and a PC4400.2 and fuses under the other.

Can you post a picture of your setup and how it's mounted? I just bought a 5-channel MB Quart off ebay and was thinking of mounting it under the seat as well. Don't know if they'll have enough space though.

It would depend on the size of your amp. My PC2600.2 is 17.75inch is length and it just fits with the speaker and power connects on each side of the amp. I will take a few pictures this weekend a post them next week.
