I need wheel/tire guru advice.

I just recently got 2006 GS sedan with regular 195/65 15 alloys on 15x6 +50 offset

I have opportunity to take 235/45 17 on lightweight 17x8 +38

This is not perfect size tire, but it's inside of margin of error 1.4%, so it should work (http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html).

Offset is also slightly wrong, but as wheel is much wider 8" vs. 6" that may not be too bad (http://www.1010tires.com/WheelOffsetCalculator.asp). I will have 13 mm less of clearance on the inside, and wheel will extend 37 mm out.

1. Will this work at all rubbing wise? (I don't see any serious problem)
2. As center of wheel moves slightly outside, is this building too much stress for the car? I plan on tracking the car, i.e. attending Advanced Driving school, so a lot of high speed cornering on Mosport and Calaboogie...

I'm not interested in alternatives, I am aware of them, question is should I take this deal?

Thx.

rub for sure

Rub on the inside or outside? On the inside, this is not much different from regular GT wheel...

Hmmm, not a lot of response; anyone on this forum has any idea if this will fit?

I don't think it will judging from the fitment I've seen on other Mazda3's. It will fit on my 6 for sure though. That's really low offset, even with rolling the fender it might be though. But they only way to know for sure is to try. See if anyone has a similar sized tire and you can test it with spacers.

8 inch rim with +38 offset will rub for damn sure....If you run 235 with it then you might even tear out your fenders.....hahah.......

Or you can take this as an example......Broli is running 225/40/18s with a 18x7 or 7.5 rim +42 offset with eibach prokits and stock struts and he's rubbing....

I dunno what rx-8 sizing is for offset... but I think it is 18"x8" and I am running 225/45/18 with a prokit and I am not rubbing.

RX8 rims are on +50 offset, thats why you're not rubbing.

Your car will look like a Go-Kart!!!
I am running 17 x 8 with a 48 offset and 225/45/17 the only way 235 could possibly fit would be by going down to a 40 series tire. Any higher of an offset and you will probably rub on the struts, any lower and you need to keep the really bad camber to fit, not to mention need quite a stiff suspension at that.

Hope that helps!

Few good responses - I think I'm getting hang of this problem. I'll try fitment in the next few days, and I'll let you know.

I am ready to roll fenders if that will help me. This is to be track/autocross setup only (not that it matters a lot)...

If anyone else has decent combo for track on sale, (even original 17" with original tires), please PM me...

On a GS sedan, stock 17"s & tires are too heavy. I need an intake to maintain the performance of the car.

You will stick out another 10mm on the offset alone over my setup.Maybe because my tires are very square you might be able to pull it off if the tires are anything like the ziex 512.

let us know what happens.

dont get those wheels with that offset.
it will look terrible IMO.
the wheels will be so far into the fenders, it just wouldnt look good.

plus with that set up, your definetely going to rub somewhere on the inside fender, most likely on the struts.

with that low of an offset, shouldn't the wheels stick out instead of in?

Ask any TL owner if they will let you test fit thier wheels, I believe they are the same size. 235/45-17, 17x8 +45. So if you can get one of these wheels and test fit before you buy, make sure you have enough space for the extra 7mm because of the lower offset.

Yes, not sure what dentinger is trying to say...

ok, i tihnk i have my offsets confused....
a high offset means the wheels stick out, and a low offset means the stick in.... right??

i keep getting them confused...

Ok, update for everyone - this combo did not fit - combination of the wide tire, and low offset that pushes wheel outside made guy that was gonna do fender roll give up.

If anyone has a combo that could be taken to the track, I'd be interested... I've just done Mosport DDC with my puny 195/65, and it was a lot of fun sliding all over the place, but car is definitely undertired to the point of scaring me.

I'll take anything as an upgrade, even stock 16" 205/55 for a decent price...

hmm...17x8 +38 = major rubbing issues
